Dix pour cent (2015)
Sublime, extraordinaire, perfect! (said with a French accent)
This is so good. I've seen it multiple times (yes I repeat shows I like), during different stages of my life and have come to find each character fascinating. With repeated viewings I found a deeper layer to the topics and characters, I hadn't fully understood before (as a non native French speaker). It's so well done and is actually on par with some good films. My favorite episode is S2 E5 and E6. It captures life itself and if seen in the right frame of mind, can leave you looking at your problems and laughing at it. It touches on important moments, creating characters and developing them without leaning too heavily on stereotypes, all while remaining light hearted. Similar to how when you beat butter and sugar and if you do it right, you create the lightest cream. It's like the light airy texture of cream but full of the substance. A philosophy on life itself. Thoroughly recommend!
I'm really looking forward to watching the fourth season. Hopefully Netflix renews it soon🤞
The Rental (2020)
Sparks of originality but eventually more of the same!
The rental, is the debut movie of director Dave Franco, brother of James Franco. It has decent acting, a few cinematic shots, some original ideas based on which it was marketed. But as the movie progresses, the story becomes complacent and predictable.
If the writers actually wanted to make points about race and the current culture of staying in other peoples houses as rentals... why go the already done route and make it a slasher? Instead I think race was just used as a check mark on diversity and add a layer into characters which clearly lacked any. It's like there were sparks of originality in the beginning but eventually succumbed to the tried and tested route of the slasher genre. Having characters with more nuance would have helped.
A critic actually compared it to a Haneke movie(I don't agree) but it brings up the point of how an effective movie actually builds on tension instead of releasing it. Maybe keeping the smaller sub points of race and relationships subtly woven into the story to add tension instead of being used as a distraction would have helped. Instead it feels like it started as a different genre but turned into a slasher. Building an atmosphere goes beyond just adding a few shots of natural landscape and a little foreshadowing. It has to be felt through the characters or else It's just surface level.
I wouldn't recommend it if you've already seen movies in the slasher genre and if you haven't I still wouldn't recommend it as there are better ones than this (see Hush)
Ozark (2017)
Best thing from Netflix since House of Cards
Walked into this serious grippy dark show casually one night. Mind blown after watching the pilot. Cut to four days two seasons later... I not only am fully invested in the world but can't wait for the third season. (Btw, I watch a lot of Netflix TV shows and Ozark blows it out of the park).
The premise itself pulls your right into this crazy dark world that is so twisted and weird but strangely close to reality. It's a lot like House of Cards w.r.t themes but more realistic. So if you liked House of Cards but found it a little far fetched, this would be my recommendation. Of course just like HOC isn't really about politics, Ozark isn't really about money laundering. It's about people at their darkest, and in the case of Ozark, a reasonable rational guy who's sucked into this world and there's no easy way to get out!
Jason Bateman is the real deal - he not only acted but also directed a few episodes and the result is remarkably good. It's a TV show worth bingeing on becuase of it's singular vision and ability to put you right in the shoes of the characters. They are all fully developed and complex, with real character aches.
P.S. Clear your schedule and buckle up for one hell of a ride.
