Resident Evil (2022)
Just wow! Netflix does it again :D
Now I will admit I have never seen anything in this franchise before, so I was pleasantly surprised when I finished up the season and I am definitely wanting more. The actors, the feel and the characters are all top-notch and there is no lack of action or set pieces to keep you hooked for the entirety of the season. The bouncing back and forth between timeframes really helps show the "lore" (for lack of a better word) that exists in this world and just when you think there's nothing else to do after the movies (front what I hear) - BOOM! We get a kick butt show. Take the time to watch this and grab some popcorn because Cobra Kai is back baby and better than ever! Cobra Kai never dies!
Uncharted (2022)
In an oversaturated adventure movie market, this movie does nothing to stand out
This is an attempt to profit off of a beloved game franchise. Plain and simple. The unfortunate thing is, it does nothing to differentiate itself from the plethora of other globe-trotting adventure movies. I don't really care about CGI anymore. Every modern movie has good CGI these days; BFD. I will say the casting is bad, the movie is mediocre and I should have just re-watched the Adventures of Tintin as it is a far better Uncharted movie (ala Pentex Productions).
Wait for it to come out on Netflix or somewhere you can see it for free.
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Big oof
I'm having a hard time finding good things to say about this movie... It was filmed on actual film? That's something. The wonderfully talented Kristen Wiig is in it? There we go, 2 things.
It is terribly boring. The plot is lazy and relies on too much hand-wavium. The writing is bad, the acting is corny and it doesn't seem to know its own identity. It should have been done in the spirit of the Wonder Woman TV show of the 80's. Go full corn with some good fun, add a bit of humor and some action. Instead it has this ambiguous theme of truth, wishes, and God knows what. It's a stinker and should be skipped. It is a real shame too, as the first WW movie was quite fun.
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: Duet (1993)
Not just good Star Trek, but good television
It's hard for me to recall how I felt the first time I saw this episode, as I have now seen it so many times, but at first glance, it appears to be analogous to the Nazi concentration camp atrocities, and in many ways it is, but instead of the seething you expect to see from Kira when Marritza arrives at the station, we are slowly introduced to a whole other story. Without going into too much detail on the episode, it pleasantly and emotionally subverts expectations in the right way.
Harris Yulin absolutely steals the show. His performance is award-worthy, and Nana Visitor's performance is a great companion to Yulin's. But I cannot overstate how good Harris Yulin was in this episode, it is the best performance by an actor in a Star Trek episode in my opinion.
There will be plenty of reviews in detail about the story, I just want to say that this episode is why DS9 is so special. This took a unique look at the Star Trek universe in a way that I never saw again. It helped peel back layers of Kira's character, as well as foster her coming to terms with her past. Between the acting, characters, and performances it is a must-watch and arguably one of the best episodes of television of all time.
Stargate SG-1: Urgo (2000)
Such a great contrast
Dom Deluise is such a naturally funny and charismatic man that seeing him just thrusted into the SG-1 dynamic is enough to make me laugh. His ad libs and masterful timing made this episode an absolute blast to watch, and I wish we could have seen him more. RIP Dom.
Gehenna: Where Death Lives (2016)
Had the potential
The potential was there, but it fell flat in a few key areas:
- Length. The movie is too long. This is particularly agonizing if you figure out the "twist" at at the beginning. Which leads to my next complaint.
- Predictable. The twist ending was far too easy to see early on. This should have been masked in another way. Less obvious to the viewer and more revealed through video footage or other methods.
- Acting. It suffered from lack of solid acting. At times, some of the performances were OK, so I will chalk this up to direction and lack of takes. (Though some of the actors should have been replaced outright).
- Pointless special appearances. Not enough screen time to matter, so why bother.
- Post credits scene. Just, no.
The Office (2001)
Amazing Series
This is one of the most original and funny shows i've ever seen. Its practically impossible to explain the show without making it sound boring, so just get the DVD and watch it.
A great love story in the most unfamiliar of love story places, the office. Ricky Gervais is an absolutely brilliant actor, and an incredibly funny guy.
Off Topic: There is a direct mention of this TV show in Doom III. Listed in one of the emails pertaining to the "Trivia Night". Lol they even use the name Finchy.
A must see.
