Doctor Who: Midnight (2008)
Nice shift of focus onto ACTING
The usual Doctor Who episode contains tons of monsters, special effects and a lot of action. This one is a pleasant change of pace. The focus has shifted from all the scary costumes and onto the actors themselves. While some may find this episode boring, others may treasure how well all the actors were handling their parts - the strange lonely lady, the common family with a rebellious son, the professor who thinks he knows it all and his bright, but overlooked assistant - these are all characters acted out with the utmost conviction. I am happy that the suspense in this episode does not come from another blatant alien attack on Earth and from the weird-looking aliens themselves, but from the build-up of strange occurrences, which leave room for the viewer's own imagination. As for Catherine Tate missing, well, that made the episode just more cohesive, because she would have ruined the atmosfear ;)
Killing Time (24/7) (2006)
Boring
I was hoping to see some good Asian movie-making in this title, but there was none evident here. The story is about a young contract killer who does three things in his life mainly: kill people for money, have sex with almost every random woman he encounters, and meet various people for no apparent reason (his mother, his father, a drug dealer). There is almost no action in this movie and the plot advances very slowly and tediously, if one can admit of the existence of a plot in this case. The sound effects, especially these of the guns, are laughable. The dialog is delivered with a chilling indifference and at some point I started wondering if this was not a high-school project rather than a full-length movie. By all means do miss this movie, if you do not want to completely waste an hour and a half of your time. If you are in the mood for some high quality Asian action cinema, go watch The City of Violence.
