Plane (2023)
You have to believe in tooth fairies to sit through this one
Ridiculous. The script is ridiculously clumsy, the director feels like has fallen asleep behind the monitor, the dop feels like an 80s sitcom veteran (no offence to 80s sitcom dops but some of the shots were so old-fashioned), airline procedures and aerodynamics were on holidays when the filmmakers wanted to consult them.
This could have been a good idea if dialogues were better, better research had been done, some more art in the craft, if... if... if...
Feels like it was a money laundering project.
I don't get why Butler keeps choosing such weak scripts to work with. I'm imagining the pitching of this story to him, "So you're the captain, lightning kills the plane, you safely land, passengers are taken hostage, you and the criminal go save them, then paramilitaries save you, you fly the plane to a nearby island and the end."
Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl (2020)
Beautiful but for the poor cinematography and appalling bgs
Most of the actors have done a great job, the lead confidently carries the film on her shoulders and immerses the viewer inside her emotional world with her subtle and silent acting. You feel more than you listen, which is what good acting is all about. Dad is awesome, but that's an established fact not for the first year. However things out of their control let down the greatness of the story that the film could have with a better execution.
At the beginning of the film, I thought the editing was really bad, but then I realised that it's not as much the editing as the poor cinematography. Most shots are static and completely emotionless, they tell the story, but don't make you feel it. Besides, the scale of the story has been brought down by unifocal storytelling. Everything is about Gunjan and her world, the rest of them mattering only when brushing against her shoulders. We needed more of the world around and their experiences in the same space.
And something that irritated me throughout the whole film was the background score. As if picked parts and joined together from 90s Hollywood films. At no point it grabs you to immerge into the story, but rather disconnects you from it. Such a patriotic film and no signs of traditional Indian touch to the bgs (not the songs).
Kuzgun (2019)
Breathtaking
Great acting by the leads, the script is really breathtaking, every episode keeps you on the edge of your seat. The music deserves separate ten stars on its own. Can't wait for the continuation. I just hope the second season will be as awesome, as the first one was.
