Extra Ordinary (2019)
Endearing, campy, horror comedy badly executed
There are good things about this movie: its campy comedic tone, its characters are sometimes endearing and a good trailer. The parody VHS tapes... I really had high hopes for this unassuming comedy. When it's good, it's good but...
However, overall, the characters are one-dimensional, the cinematography is far from memorable, the direction is uncertain. The jokes are sometimes good, sometimes bad. The car chase was funny and a good idea, for example. But the good bits aren't good enough to make us forget about all the bad bits.
Some enjoyable performances - Forte's satanic baddie, for one- but few of the actors stand out due to poor character development and script.
Into the Blue (1997)
An overlong episode of Scooby doo
Mansions!
Darkness!
Disparitions!
Masked faces and reveals!
Gasps!
Comical plot twists!
Killer lovers!
It could have been a solid episode of Scooby Doo but felt like a waste of time.
Ang-ma-reul bo-at-da (2010)
Violent, gruesome and pointless
The film has an undeniable asthetics to it but the story is lacking. Do you want to see women depicted as completely helpless butchered? Do you want to see a hero who's not very smart engage in a futile game of cat and mouse? Do you want to see blood and guts on the screen? This is for you.
Crazy Rich Asians (2018)
Gorgeous cast, shallow and pointless movie
This was supposed to be a breakthrough movie featuring Asians. Instead all I found was a very shallow story with one dimensional characters and it doesn't matter whether they're Asians or not, they are some of the vilest characters you could think of.
Why Him? (2016)
How can I banish this from my memory?
Was this supposed to be a comedy?
There was a gag about sitting on a Japanese toilet and number twos smelling bad. There was a gag about a Siri-like version of Kaley Cuoco. An assistant called Gustav with pantomime accent. Also Kiss, the actual members of the band, humiliating themselves. Lots of hilarious uses of the words sh*t, f**k, t*tties, motor-boating and others that IMDb won't let me type.
All this with a story line of old manufacturing business vs Silicon Valley startup millions, and a dad vs daughter's boyfriend story. And you can imagine how these predictable plot lines end.
It was dreadful from beginning to end and two hours long.
Deliha (2014)
Funny and not your usual "rom com"
Deliha is a little gauche, very plain but doesn't lack in confidence.
I watched this movie by chance on a Turkish Airlines flight and was entertained right from the opening scene where the character shines. It makes sense that the movie was built around the character. The story itself loses a little steam towards the end for me but it will nevertheless amuse you.
It's great to discover Turkish cinema can produce such good comedies, miles away from the formulaic Hollywood Rom Coms and the language or cultural barriers are not a problem in appreciating Deliha.
Highly recommended, something funny, something different!
Mrs. Henderson Presents (2005)
boring and uninteresting
Not awful but pretty damn boring and uninteresting. I feel compelled to write this brief review just to warn others - even though I have barely ever written reviews.
Dench, Frears, Hoskins, Young? So much talent, you'd expect something decent. The story is boring, the intrigue not very intriguing and so on. There may be a historical benefit to watching this but I can't see it.
Were it not for the odd body part, I wonder if the movie would have attracted so many to theatres. I can't see any saving grace and I wish I could.
Cachorro (2004)
Worth watching - if not for its acting and script, at least for its theme.
Despite the director's statement in the DVD extras, I found the characters quite clichéd, the script a little heavy-handed, and actor direction a little loose.
A masterpiece it is not. In fact, I was tempted to stop watching all along but continued to the end, hoping for something interesting to happen and the story to take off. While it didn't happen, the last minute revelations made it worthwhile to stick with it for 1hr30+ minutes.
Without disclosing any of the (thin) plot, I have to say that I was positively surprised at the difficult themes treated in the story of Bear Cub and tip my hat to its director. It may not be a cult classic in years to come, but deserves some attention.
