The Rose (1979)
My Favorite Film of All Time
I have seen this film numerous times and I never tire of it. Without question, Bette Midler gives one of the best performances of any actor or actress that I have ever seen! She runs the gamut from comedy to tragedy and never hits a false note. This is a movie that has everything. Great acting, great music and a great story. Frederic Forrest and Alan Bates also shine. But this is Midler's movie all the way. The telephone booth call was a masterful, heartbreaking piece of acting and she was ROBBED of an Oscar, no question. Meant to be seen on the big screen, but watch it on a large screen TV and with surround sound, you'll be transfixed. Not a false note in the whole film. Very quotable lines as well, Brava!!!
Squeeze Play (1979)
See this with Beer League
This long forgotten movie is a perfect companion piece to Artie Lange's "Beer League". This movie has its moments, and while not as funny as Beer League, it is still quite entertaining. There is an actress named Precious Colquist who is in the beginning of the movie who delivers a killer line, wanted to see more of her. She rocked! Has she done anything else? The female softball players were all hot, especially Jenni Hetrick .The only person I recognized was Al Corley from "Dynasty". This film is basically in the R rated comedy genre but more reminiscent of "Porky's+ than say Animal House. Should get another push on DVD. It seems right to see it now with the success of Beer League.
Beer League (2006)
Delivers As Promised
Artie Lange's "Beer League" is exactly what it sets out to be. A good natured, raunchy R rated comedy in the tradition of "Old School" and "Porky's". There are many laugh out loud moments. This movie is destined to receive the wider audience that it deserves on DVD than it got in its limited release in theatres. The performances were all very natural, especially Artie Lange basically playing himself, Anthony DeSando as his nemesis, and Cara Buono as Lange's girlfriend. Also very good is Ralph Macchio ( welcome back!) and Elizabeth Regan, who you may remember as the scene stealer on the "Whoopi" TV show. This movie reminded me of another softball comedy "Squeeze Play" but this film is so much better. If you enjoy watching lovable slobs redeem themselves, this film is for you.
