Binge - watched the entire season in one day!
2 January 2020
I found this series brilliant! It has great characters, plenty of action and excitement, and gets you thinking. In today's age of political correctness, it's sad to see so many people get all worked up about the subject matter. If you are easily offended over any little thing, just save yourself the trouble and skip it. Otherwise, I highly recommend watching this series!

It was entertaining!
24 December 2017
I have been reading a lot of biting comments from others and I just didn't hate it. I had a good time! Was it one of the best movies I have ever seen? No. But it was entertaining and fun! A great way to spend part of a holiday weekend with family! I do believe some of the plot points and battle scenes could have been cut/shortened to reduce the film's running time to under 2 hours. But the cast is great and the addition of Benicio del Toro (one of my favorite actors) and Laura Dern added a lot, for me. I enjoyed the humorous parts, and the creatures and special effects were great! I have seen every Star Wars movie, but I am not obsessed to the point where I found this movie as "offensive" as so many others have. I will close by saying this was a fond farewell to Carrie Fisher. May the Force be with you always, Princess Leia!

Excellent Show - We Need a Season 2!!!
17 July 2016
I ended up binge-watching the entire season - 4 episodes yesterday and 4 tonight - like so many others!! I thought it was excellent! I'm not even a huge "80's" era fan, but this show managed to find the very best of that decade and bring it to positive light. The homage to the films and writers was so well done and the music was amazing! Parts of the show reminded me of "The Goonies" and "Stand By Me" as well. After I watched the entire season, I realized I was thoroughly entertained and without a single scene of gratuitous violence or sex, something that much of today's programming relies on vs. back in the 80's or earlier. I found it refreshing and yes it's something a family can actually watch together (although very young children might be frightened by the monster). The only reason I did not rate this show a 10 is I thought Ryder's character was a bit too much at times. The constant hysterics wore me out for the first half of the season but it did get better in the second half. I understand she was a panicked mother so I can't put a finger on it. I just found Joyce a little annoying. I'm not sure if that was an acting or writing flaw so I will leave it at that. That was minor though and I still would recommend this show wholeheartedly!! I hope they bring it back for more season(s)!

Well done - and faithful to the novels!
17 July 2014
I read the trilogy (I recommend to all whether you watch the series or not - very good!) and while reading I couldn't help but imagine what a great trilogy of movies they would make! But a TV series? Even BETTER! There are so many characters in the books and so many parallel story lines that a series is the only way to do justice to the books - and justice they have done so far with episode one! But of course with both Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan directing/producing, what could possibly go wrong!? To whit - nothing! The series is well cast! I love all 3 leads, Eph, Nora and especially - Abraham. And the first episode I found simply riveting! Even though I know how everything ends up, I am going to relish each episode! I won't give out any spoilers here - all I can and will do is assure you if you stick with the series you are in for a helluva ride! As the series True Blood draws to a close this year and thankfully Twilight is concluded, it's high time for a new kind of terrifying vampire - not some handsome man but a scary, deadly, disgusting beast! Oh, I just can't wait!

Life of Pi (2012)
9/10
One of the best movies I've seen in a long time...
25 August 2013
Life of Pi was simply amazing! It had that epic feel in spanning the young life of the title character beginning as a young boy - and then his adult self. Add to that the drama and sense of adventure and survival as he is stranded at sea with some animals and eventually the tiger, Richard Parker. Throw in some fantasy and exquisite cinematography with the nighttime scenes especially. And the cherry on top? The message of faith but not in a preachy way. I think some have tried to read into the religious aspect maybe too much in reading other reviews. This film IMO was generalizing to suit a purpose. It's pretty easy to figure out. This is one of those movies that sticks with you. I will be buying a copy on DVD for my permanent library. Ang Lee has done it again!

Cloud Atlas (2012)
7/10
Movie is OK but struggles a bit to match the genius of the book...
18 May 2013
Warning: Spoilers
..That said,it was certainly a commendable effort by the writing/directing/acting team as Cloud Atlas was without a doubt a huge undertaking.(I'm usually late with my reviews as I seldom see them in theaters and wait for the DVD and this time, no exception -sorry). Having read the book, I was able to "fill in the blanks" but I have to wonder if the whole thing was just too confusing to someone who hadn't read it. The constant jumping back and forth between all 6 plot lines would have to be dizzying to someone just walking in and one has to wonder if that is why the movie didn't do particularly well. I found it particularly disappointing that Robert Frobisher's story wasn't delved into more. His was one of the most interesting. The character Eva was completely eliminated - why? - and although I don't remember Robert making "a pass" at Ayrs (although maybe he did and I just don't remember), I seem to remember their discord was over Ayrs discovering Robert's affair with his wife Jocasta. OK, I digress; I realize movies and TV shows deviate all the time from their literary "parents" but I don't know. This was one of the best books I've read in ages and I guess I just expected more. And - really - did the dog need to be shot? I'll give it a 7 anyway for amazing sets, costumes and the sci-fi stuff is sweet! I just don't know whether or not you should read the book before watching or not! Thanks, Jeb...

Dark Shadows (2012)

What an enjoyable "romp" this film was!!
22 October 2012
I thoroughly enjoyed myself watching this film! Is it cinematic genius? Maybe not in the eyes of most - but when I can laugh out loud many times and forget about the troubles of the day for 90 minutes - then I say- a job well done, Tim Burton!!! In an era in filmmaking and TV where we are all kinda OD'd on vampires - Burton kinda pokes fun at the genre and I LOVE it! Also, if you are a child of the 70's then this is a must see! The music (songs) are fabulous and there are so many "kitschy" 70's things thrown in that I may have to watch it again as I'm sure I've missed some. Operation game, lava lamp (particularly funny), "Tiny songstress" (Karen Carpenter on the TV)!!!!!Oh- and the percussion organ! Priceless stuff! Depp was delightful in this! I loved him! And Michelle Pfeiffer as well. Really the only character I had a problem with was the witch Angela but that was mostly because her scenes were sometimes bordering on the ridiculous. The "sex scene" was pretty lame - you won't lose much by fast-forwarding through it. Yes the plot is somewhat predictable but who cares? I loved this movie! Tim Burton is the one guy that can throw in enough weirdness and fun and macabre all into one glorious melting pot -and brew up something wonderful! If you want a fun, lighthearted movie - I recommend Dark Shadows!

This was *not* good. Delete it from your Netflix queue! LOL
21 October 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Oh, man...this was bad. I'm not even sure why I gave it a 2 - that was generous! I know horror movies can tend to be lame. But some can be good (the "Paranormal Activity" series, The Exorcist, The Rite). But this one was just awful. I saw it only as a slam to the "corporate world" - such a typical view from Hollywood. But come on, a bunch of guys in white shirts and black ties killing people for - what? - That is never really made clear other than a bunch of other "corporations" worldwide "compete" for some unknown prize. While celebrating deaths etc with "office pools", etc. I don't know. Didn't make it to the end of this one. All I saw in this movie was the political message and it ticked me off. I don't want politics either left or right when I watch a movie. I just want to be entertained. And the only scary part in this movie - I agree with another reviewer - was the creepy guy at the gas station. Pass on this one folks, even if you are an anarchist. It's still bad LOL!

The Grey - a Mixed Bag
13 October 2012
Warning: Spoilers
OK film fans, I'm giving this one a 6 and here's why. YES, I know the whole wolf behavior thing is unrealistic. That's been said and done many many times in earlier reviews. But I pretty much always watch movies on DVD. And when something is horrid I just pop it out of my DVR - done deal! Not like with being in a movie theater and having to choose between sitting through it or walking out. That said, this one I watched to the end. And here's why: ~Liam Neeson - this guy is one of the most underrated action actors of our time. He is always amazing, even if given somewhat lame material to work with. He just shows the passion in his eyes. Case in point - the final scene in this movie. ~The other acting- Dermot Mulroney and the other less familiar names - ALL did a fabulous job. You agonized right along with them. ~The plane crash was pretty cool. Nothing will ever match that scene in "Alive!" when that whole back half of the plane got sucked out but considering the advancement of film making since "Alive!" - the plane crash was a great scene! ~Also, the flashbacks were well done and not in a confusing way like in some films. I especially was moved by the scenes with Ottway's wife.

All in all I was entertained. Was it realistic? Not so much, but who doesn't want to get thrown into a bit of dramatic, exciting fantasy stuff from time to time.

My only gripe is the ending and here's my "spoiler". WTF? Really? We don't know what happens? Seems it was Ottway vs. the alpha and he was armed with a fistful of broken bottles and a knife vs the wolf. Will we have a sequel?

The Artist (I) (2011)

It's a good film. Did I do somersaults over it? No. But worthy for film buffs
8 September 2012
Warning: Spoilers
OK, so being honest I found the first 1/3 of this film a bit dreadful. But with all of the fabulous reviews I stuck it out and am glad I did. It's not easy adjusting to a b/w film with no dialog for us "non-artsy" types like myself. I just like being entertained when I watch a movie, not artsy-fartsy'd to death. But in the end I got hooked into the plot although slightly predictable as it was. The acting especially on the male lead was excellent but really on everyone's part to be able to bring the emotion with no dialog other than the occasional written paragraph. And probably my favorite thing about the entire film was that little dog! What a devoted and amazing pal he was to George! I did love that at the very end - George speaks his only two words "With pleasure". That was cool! So yeah, I recommend this however it's certainly not everyone's cup-o-tea. Best picture of the year? Not in my opinion but I guess it was extremely unique and if that is what the Acadamy votes on then I understand.

Just watched it on DVD - it was OK but I was a bit disappointed
28 July 2012
Warning: Spoilers
OK this movie did have it's highlights. Elizabeth Olsen was great in it, and as a matter of fast so was all of the acting. But the story and ending were frustrating beyond belief. Why was Martha unable to tell her sister she had been in a cult? It had only been 2 years and she clearly was in touch enough to remember life before the cult (asking about the aunt). I think the story tried to portray their relationship as too dysfunctional for her to be able to, but the story failed. If I had someone who even remotely cared about me and I had been in that situation I would spill the beans and try to nail those murderous b-tards! I checked the "spoiler" box only because am I the only one that didn't get the ending? She is apparently being taken to therapy/asylum and someone is following them and Blam! The End! I ask pray tell, why Hollywood sees fit to end movies with the audience hanging and wondering WTF? It's not fun, not "artsy", and only makes us ask. How can I get back the 90 minutes of my life? I gave this movie a 5 but only for acting. The plot and story get a 0 or 1.

A recommend for animal lovers - You will be touched. Just one tiny gripe (DVD)
8 July 2012
I just watched this on DVD. It's a good movie, jerks a few tears and is touching in places. But surprisingly, what disappoints me is in watching the DVD "extras" And the real life Benjamin Mee, I(as well as some of those that have read the book I am guessing),was disappointed to see how far from the real story the movie veered. Different country, different life situation with the main characters, different main characters (the female zoo keeper in the movie? Really?) I know the author signed off on this but I have to ask myself. Would his real life story in England not have been every bit as interesting if left intact? They kept in the single dad and death of the mother..Well I guess that would be my only complaint. I am just one to always see if a film is "based on a true story" to make sure on the DVD to check that out if provided in a vignette. Watch this movie on it's own without that and you will enjoy it. Just my small gripe.

I highly recommend this film - but it's not for someone looking for a "cheerful romp"
4 July 2012
I just watched this on DVD and I thought this was an incredibly well-done film. I was waiting eagerly for it to come out on DVD and for some reason couldn't find it at my local rental, so was thrilled to finally get a copy.

As someone who has dealt with life-long depression,I completely relate to the character of Justine. As I too would finally be at peace with an impending disaster. I know that sounds morose, but that's just been my feeling for years and wow, this film brought it out. I think anyone who likes to delve into real emotions and the human psyche would get something out of this film as well. And I must mention - the cinematography and artwork of this film is extraordinary. I've watched it twice this week and will purchase a copy on HD as soon as I can get my hands on on. This one's a keeper and it's appropriate for these modern times when so much threatens our existence. Well done, Lars!

You MUST see this movie!
12 August 2006
There are so many political debates out there regarding whether or not we should be at war with Iraq, and our relationship with Isreal, etc. Toss that stuff aside for two hours. This is an incredible movie that documents two regular guys called upon to do their job, who are faced with the true and ugly reality of 9/11 in NYC on that fateful day. This movie is about people. Survivors. Family. And two men faced with death at their doorstep. I walked away today a different person after this movie. Everyone should see it because it's a true story about the human spirit. Oliver Stone should be proud. If you only see one movie at the theater this year, make it be "World Trade Center". You won't be sorry.
