Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
A Golden Dud
I was looking forward to WW84. The opening scene gave me the hope but as the movie progresses I start getting distracted. No doubt Gal Gadot is the Wonder woman of our times and her efforts are there to be seen. Pedro Pascal is great but the script betrayed him. Chris Pines was given nothing. If he was replaced by a mannequin, you wouldn't know. There is a curiously shaped crystal which grants wishes and a Lex Luthor wannabe- Maxwell Lord who wants it.
The central theme is how overwhelming desire can be harmful. The world becomes chaotic soon and so does my thoughts.
The fight scenes are not powerful or emotionally compelling. Like when WW is losing her strength but still has to fight, it had to induce emotions and feelings for her. The finale fight sequence was bad to cut it short. Chris Pines character is impotent... characterisationwise.
I didn't understand if world was going haywire, where was Superman? He should have already been a big news in 1984. There is no fleeting mention of him anywhere.
All in all it's one time watch movie for Gal Gadot and Pedro Pascal.
Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl (2020)
Half baked. Damp squib.
Without looking at factual depictions of the life of real life Gujan Saxena, let's review it simply as an entertainer.
Firstly, The film is made by and for civilians. Defense veterans wont like it and it's nothing to do with the negative portrayal but because of the naive research work by the film crew.
There were many loopholes and gross misrepresentation. Last but not the least one was in the climax...which if was true...then a court martial trial was guaranteed but instead the protagonist is hailed.
The film could have been better. Utter waste of talent of Pankaj Tripathi.
Paatal Lok (2020)
Bravo! Storytelling at it's best
Firstly, kudos to the casting team. The direction, the screenplay, the cinematography and the acting, everything was exceptional.
Generally in indian movies you know who is negative character simple by the treatment of direction. In patal lok there is non such give aways. It adds to the suspense.
Yes I felt that left leaning ideology in the under current of the narrative. However, all was very subtle though it packed a punch.
The character of Tyagi didn't have much dialogue but the soul piercing stare would give you goosebumps.
The episode of Cheeni's backstory was the hardest to watch. I felt something die inside me.
What stands out most is that the rural and the lutyens elite stories were told equally well.
Worth watching and recommending. Not for the weak at heart or who prefer romcom... I guess
Professor Shanku O El Dorado (2019)
Boring and Jagged screenplay
My review is purely based on my perspective as an audience. I do read good stories as well.
1. This character of Shoku by Satyajit Ray has a nostalgic value for most of Bengali children of the 80s and 90s. Portraying him with mobile phones and laptops doesn't really strike the right cord.
2. Using VfX should be logical and shouldn't be used unnecessarily. Like there is a scene where Shonku dials or saves number from a holographic gadget. Why? If you have more convenient mobile phone. The teleconference by a holographic projector seemed unconvincing. It would have been better if all the guys were sitting as normal instead of floating over the table. Eg. In Avenger movies.
3. The screenplay was so boring that I had to fast forward a lot. The scenes of people travelling were... of only them travelling and driving, nothing else.
4. The story should have taken place in the 80s.
5. The acting all around was mediocre. Seemed like the casting director had hired some foreign tourists with elementary acting skills.
6. Only good part is the effort put in and indeed the professionals behind the camera have worked hard but the whole thing fell apart due to poor conceptualizing and screenplay.
Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
Lost the way
Its obvious to compare between the first installment and the second. I found this movie visually confusing while the plot was plain and boring without much twist which you expect when Loki is there. The villain here is the AI Ultron whose algorithm is set at destroying the earth for instilling peace. That is confusing in itself. We have seen such movies where a robot or AI has gone bad a zillion times. The problem is the predictability of the story.
While it was nice to have a complicated little love story between The Hulk and Black Widow and an unexpected discovery of family of one of the Avengers. It seemed as if this movie was just a bridge between the upcoming movies. The fight sequences reminded me of I, Robot. So many things could have been possible with such powerful AI getting into the world wide web... He could have played God, he could have commanded the earth population. Instead he wants to delete earth from the face of the solar system.
The Avengers seemed like a bunch of high school students...party freaks, unsure, broken hearted and angry. There were too many things packed in each shot and it was difficult to focus on the characters.. like when two characters are talking there are 2-3 non participating lead actors strolling around or conversing amongst themselves or something non important is happening in the background. The background score is also changed. The new one is unimpressive. They should have stuck with the original score to maintain continuity.
All in all its a one time watch
MSG: The Messenger of God (2015)
This is the problem with public ratings
I found people giving 10/10 rating for this disgrace of a movie. Strange part is these accounts of the reviewers were created near the release date of the movie. Since the movie was postponed few are a month old and others only a day or a week old accounts. Further, these accounts have not reviewed any other movie till date.
The protagonist has wasted the hard earned money donated by his blind followers just to see his fat ass and hairy armpits. Its not just a movie because if these stunts were done by any other actor it would be just an act BUT its a full fledged promotion of his religious cult "Dera Sachha...whatever...". You will basically be funding this single man religious cult if you go and watch this disgrace.
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 2 (2013)
Wickediest and Awesomest Batman!
When i read the plot summary, i was skeptical but since i am a fan of Batman, i went ahead and watched this movie. Boy! i am glad that i saw this epic epic movie. Batman: Under the Redhood was violent but this movie is completely in different league. I could almost feel the frustration of the old Batman due to the physical constraints due to age. I could also feel the determination and the kick-ass attitude which drove him. This movie has the most epic, sinister-est and violent Batman V/s Joker encounters ever. I was so involved into the plot that i could feel the exhaustion of Batman due continuous battles. Must watch!
Godzilla (2014)
Could have been one of the greatest monster movies but....
Godzilla means jaw dropping humongous monster which has an attitude as big as his body. This movie tries to be different. Quiet similar to the treatment in the movie Cloverfield (one of the best monster movies). If both were videogames. Cloverfield was a first person shooter and Godzilla is "mostly" a third person shooter but...both follow a protagonist. Interestingly, the second monster is very very similar to the monster of Cloverfield. Suspense is the key to a monster movie...Godzilla 2014 over-killed it. The first half drags but the second half makes up for that. I am 32 and i grewup on Godzilla, King-Kong B-Grade VHS tapes and Godzilla toys and am a fan of Godzilla 1998. When i watch these new movies of King- Kong or Godzilla i relive that child within me. This movie did just that but only in the second half. One time watch.
Mere Dad Ki Maruti (2013)
An underrated entertainer
If you liked "Khosla ka Ghosla", you would surely love this family entertainer. I missed this movie when it was in the theaters but saw it at my friends place. Its a classic Shakespearean plot where everything is a mess until the climax. Acting all around was commendable and everybody portrayed their part as the role demanded. Special mention- The lead lady "Rhea" may seem to be a bit challenged in acting but when you think more you will realise that she portrayed the "bimbo beauty" role pretty well and that demanded such expressions initially but her character grew as the film proceeds. Frankly speaking, this movie was sure must watch with friends in the cinemas but i missed that opportunity.
Shaadi Ke Side Effects (2014)
Side effect from watching this movie- Confusion
The start is promising. Later its all confusing and then its ends with a big WTF... A struggling musician marries a well settled working woman. An ingredients for a serious movie. Instead it looks like dish supposed to a Biryani...turns out to be a Khichdi. How the hell did this struggling musician afford to go to exotic foreign locations with his girlfriend and also propose her with a big solitaire while in a hot air balloon? The wife's profession is not known. They lead a luxurious lifestyle. They even hire a 15000 Rupees nanny while the wife is not working. Though, through out the film its about the male leads struggle. Defies logic. The support acts were like playing kabaddi...they come and go at the drop of a popcorn. The main issues portrayed are genuine but the story really lags in dealing with them. Not to waste money on this. If you really want to watch this, wait for it come on a movie channel.
Dhoom:3 (2013)
Why the hell did i waste my money on this!?
You have to agree that "Jai Dixit" is a failure as a cop. He never catches the thief. Now why the hell would the US want an Indian cop to solve their case, more so when he has a record of failures. His record of failures is untarnished in this story too. Plenty of loop holes..i mean plenty as the number of grains of a fistful of sand. It baffles me as to how such a childish film manages to be India's top grosser in Box Office. A bank robber in the US robs a bank and leaves a message "Bank walon..tumhari aisi ki taisi"?!...in Hindi script...wtf! The stunts defy all logic. Even Iron Man will be jealous of the bikes. Aamir's acting was refreshing and different. Katrina's roll was as short as her dresses. Abhishek...please change your hairstyle or your walking or do something for god's sake. Uday...who?
Shuddh Desi Romance (2013)
A beautiful ZERO
Zero... because everybody is running around in circles. Its like a dog chasing its own tail story. I pay to go to a movie for the story. A story that intrigues and entertains. What irritates me is when the story is like cotton candy. You want to have one but after having few bites, you are no more interested. Other than the script and story, this film is beautifully directed. There are movies based on complications of marriage, fear of commitment and live-in relations which are really good. This film seems to just titillate the audience with fact of non committal side of a live-in relation. There are real world examples of love stories which crumble after marriage. Take example of Eminem. He married and divorced his same ex-wife twice but still they are very much in love and are together. I just believe the story could have been better written.
Mishawr Rawhoshyo (2013)
Could have touched greatness but....
I had stopped watching bengali movies when i was a child in the 80s. It seemed too childish to even a child then. Recently, with Chokher Baali, Bhooter Bhobishyot, Goenar Baksho and now this... i am watching Bengali movies again. While i was watching the movie, i felt proud as a probashi bengali.
I have never read Kakababu stories but have heard about him from my cousins in Kolkata. It was my discovery of the character through this film. The movie could have been great if the story telling was compact and fast. Certain portions were painfully stretched. I even went out from the hall to grab some snacks. When i came back, i didn't miss anything. Casting and acting were the strong points but few characters were forced.
There were few loopholes like the one in the climax. It seemed childish. The climax was not at all thrilling, instead it was hilarious. The background score was good but seems unnecessary and irritatingly used in many situations. Use of darkness and silence inside the pyramid could have been thought about. Instead it was well lit and loud with background music.
Still, hats-off to the maker for this brave and entertaining attempt.
A one time watch for sure.
Olympus Has Fallen (2013)
Its a Chuck!...Its a Bruce!...Its an Arnold...Its...a Butler!
That's it. You got the story.
We grew up watching these "kind of" movies. Those were the days when we used to rent VHS of super cop movies. Ahhh...sweet old memories. A really talented cop/bodyguard/security guy falls from grace, retires, does some odd jobs only to return with vengeance. Today, it seems childish concept in the era of real terrorism and people getting first hand experience of terrorism. Somehow, like "The Last Action Hero" Butler dodges every goddamn bullet in the universe. Whereas, the complete armed force responsible for security of one of the most secured place on earth seem to run deliberately in the line of fire as if they were waltzing in the rain. Butler hops..skips and dances between the flying bullets as if they were pancakes. The only best part was the invasion of the white house by the Hercules C-130 plane. Its was cruel reminder. The red wire or the blue one...4...3...2...phissss....
Goynar Baksho (2013)
A promising movie murdered by pseudo intellectual activism syndrome
The production quality is excellent. The first half was really good. The storytelling, acting, directing, cinematography everything was spot on. Sadly everything started tumbling downhill thereafter. I was enjoying the first half and expected more in the second. Then it all started...forced character entries, forced activism. I then kicked back to me that it was an Aparna Sen film. One factual error was showing of the daughter of Konkona Sen's driving a Vijay(red color) scooter in the year 1971. The fact is SIL- makers of Vijay scooters only started production in 1975. Mopeds like Luna were available but its hard to believe a girl in the 70's going to college on these and that too not in Calcutta. It seemed to be done to make the character Uber Modern. Bengalis will understand when i say the second half was full of "aantlami" (pseudo intellectual). Inter religion love affair, extra marital affair, feminism and revolution packed in 1 hour. The movie should have kept itself to story telling without being preachy. There were many places where the film could have ended. Like when Konkona (Somlata) gives birth or it could have gone forward and if it ended with "Chaitali" getting married and gets back the "Goinar Bakso" My review is on the movie and is not anyway a comparison with the novel.
Iron Man Three (2013)
Not just a popcorn popper
Firstly, do not go into the theater with the comic book hangover. The movie is very different from the characters actually created for comics. It is similar to the 'Elseworlds' series created by DC. If you are a politically conscious adult like me, you will find similarities from real world. To cut it short...the movie has everything for everybody, child, teen or adult. Its not just about the action or the Iron Man suit..its about the people in them. The undercurrent of the movie is strong. The subtle message that whatever you watch on news media is not always the truth. You will be disappointed if you are expected full on Rambo style in-your- face action or if you are expecting a comic book copy of character. Its like the new Batman series movies which recreated the characters with whom we can relate to...not just super-villains with magical powers. To end it: Perfectly timed action, humor and comedy. Love the script and story.
Oblivion (2013)
Visually Intriguing but not Original
One thing about Tom Cruise movies like Nicolas Cage the focus of the story as well as the camera is irritatingly always on him. There are seldom anything on the other characters. This movie is not different. Seeing the length and slow pace in places, a sub story about Morgan Freeman's character could have been interesting. Also, the storyline is very inspired from "Moon (2009)" and the romance angle eerily similar to "Vanilla Sky(2001)". There are too many loopholes in the story. Visually its impeccable. Acting performances are also commendable. Action sequences mainly comprise of Star Wars style chases. Final verdict: There are many good movies which are "inspired" because of their gripping storytelling- the heart of a good entertainer. Oblivion will fails to engage with its story if you are a sci-fi fan.
Ek Tha Tiger (2012)
I curse the day when i went to watch this movie
While i was watching the movie it reminded me of the late 80's and 90's genre of "Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (QSQT)" movies. Formula.. two rival families, a girl and boy from each side fall in love followed by elopement and the respective families hunting them. Unlike QSQT we have Salman to save the day who can dodge bullets (better than The Matrix guy) and handle high tension electricity wires like they were hot potatoes.
Action: Chase scenes looked like Parkour documentary. Out of the million bullets only one lucky bullet managed to scratch the Tiger and he simply said..."meh.." with disinterest.
Emotion/Romance: Katrina Kaif aka Soya...oops Zoya's expressions (mostly) reminded me of my expressions during my job interviews. Big watery eyes, swollen lips, not having any clue about what the hell is going on.
It made a joke out of the intelligence agencies. Agents looked stupid without the audience being told about the depth of the missions. I expected much more from a Director who had given us Kabul Express and New York. Dude you may have scored with the big bucks but you have lost respect in the eyes of your fans.
