Esther and the King (1960)
Nice Adaptation of the Book of Esther
I just got finished seeing this historical drama. As a religious Jew, I wondered how the story would be played out on the big screen. I enjoyed it very much, even though it has a lot of "historical liberties". Overall, its a pretty good version of the Book of Esther, and while not as big an epic as The Ten Commandments, it still adds in a little "extra" drama to keep the non-Jewish audience interested. While not exactly what happened, most of the story is accurate.
Joan Collins is very beautiful, and gives a believable performance as Esther, and Dennis O'Dea is excellent as Mordcai. The Actors playing King Ahaserous, and Prince Haman, were just a little too clean-shaven and handsome; but that's Hollywood!
I will probably watch it again, before I un-tivo it...
Deadwood (2004)
I hated it, then I loved it...
Hello -
As a dedicated Sopranos fan, I was sucked into watching the premiere of Deadwood. I thought that the first episode or two were; too violent, too contrive, and overall way way way too much 20th century style cursing. I can see them cursing a little bit, but MF? That scened where one man sits at a table at the Gem and just curses for long minute was really unnecessary, IMHO. I really didn't like the show, until a few of the later episodes, and as the characters really started to take off. Some of the soliloquies's were very interesting, and I can't remember a TV show with a soliloquy in it since MASH. After a few more episodes, I was hooked. The characters were deepening with complexity. Was Al really a BAD man, or just trying to make a buck? I particularly enjoyed the MR WU episode, and I would really like to see the outtakes from this show! They must have said "CS" 20 times, but it was hysterical! There are enough story lines going to keep us guessing until next year. Will they have a wintertime episode? South Dakota has some real winter weather...not hot and dusty all the time. Will Ricky Jay and Powers Booth have a duel, where Ricky throws a playing card at him and slices his head off???
I look forward to the next season of Deadwood!
