Brazil (1985)
Brazil
After Time Bandits, Gilliam has directed an much more visually stunning and exciting film. For adults mind. Brazil follows a similar story to Orwell's 1984 where the society in which people live is bizarre, scary and full of paper work. Here Jonathan Pryce plays Sam Lowry, and with the help of a great cast and Gilliam's oversee, he plays someone who wishes to escape from the totalitarian society that he works for.
Each seen is watchable with the dazzling effects and sets and parts really do have you laughing and getting scared. And to me, it's amazing, and after a full ten years of having The Empire Strikes Back as my favourite film, this little gem came along and snapped up that title. Terry Gilliam deserves all the credit he can muster as well as each actor who took part.
Silent Hill (2006)
Silent Hill
Silent Hill, another video adaptation is actually the best horror thriller I've seen since The Others. Christopher Gans direction of a cold deserted town and a woman attempting to find her daughter is the most chilling effect, with a musical score that's similar to his last film, Brotherhood of the Wolf, although this score was adapted from the actual game. Performances aren't particularly solid but is forgiven due to the scares and pretty nasty shocks within. Some of the special effects are superb, and there is that sense of another world which you are glad you aren't entering. I'm just glad that it is a stronger film than other films in this genre have been of late, as well as giving hope for other video games that could be taken into consideration.
Fainaru fantajî VII (1997)
Nothing will ever compare
I'm well aware that the vast use of film, television, written word, images, comics and other art forms are used to create some exciting, wonderful, heart breaking funny stories. Star Wars captured the imagination of millions, Disney has excelled in many different stories, J.K Rowling and J.R.R Tolkien have been reno wed for their fantasy tales. But I don't believe that there has ever been something as powerful as this. FFVII has this gorgeous urban feeling, stringed all the way throughout the game, followed by the use of Japanese anime sty;e graphics and themes that are so often found in stories, but FFVII has such a subtle way of telling them. It's also a fantasy that falls into such dazzling effects.
I'm, pretty certain that nothing has been able to create the same effect that this game has. It's been followed by its sequels and even a sequel movie, all have their own great and good points. But FFVII is heart breaking and heart warming and I think that's why it's been so strong in my mind for years. Those of you who have working PSones and a copy of the game, please ensure that it's passed on to the right person. This is one story that should never die.
Drop Dead Fred (1991)
Drop Dead Frdd
Enjoyable fantasy comedy if you're age nine and below. However, the the film isn't suited for that age group.
Rik Mayal is wonderful as the wild imaginary character Drop Dead Fred, who has returned to his old friend Elizabeth after her divorce. His English madcap tune is perfect for the setting of highly materialistic individuals. With her now under the rule of her bitter mother, Elizabeth has to endure Drop Dead Fred as the only fun that is available to her.
The film is sweet and sentimental, and it's not entirely intelligent either along with attempting to become the next Beetlejuice, but it's charming and admittedly funny in places.
I, Robot (2004)
I, Robot
It seems that Will Smith, although tried his hand at biographies with Ali, he's not getting away from Sci-fi in any hurry. Well, I don't think this is a bad thing, seeing as he does suit it.
I, Robot, based on one of Isaac Asimov's stories goes into the plot of a suicide which Detective Spooner, played by Smith suspects to be murder. His ideas are snuffed at and he goes on the investigation of what actually happened, leading him to a robot by the name of Sonny.
Special effects are a nice piece of this film at some points and the action is paced nicely but it suffers from length time of being a little short and it does make you feel that the film doesn't want to reveal more than is already there. It's still a enjoyable night out and thankfully isn't patronising like stereotypical summer films.
Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous (2005)
Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous
Sandra Bullock returns as Gracie Hart in a sequel that will have teenage girls in fits of giggles.
Admittedly there isn't much new to this film. Gracie is chosen to lead a new image for the FBI, before her old friend is taken hostage and she has to work with a tough new partner to solve the crime.
The film is predictable, has no major belly laughs, but really doesn't tend to be a bad film, due to Bullock enjoying her role and the addition of Diedrich Bader filling in Micheal Caine's role from the original. At first you think he's just mimicking Caine, before you find out he's just as fun.
Strictly for hen night reasons or something or other for girls, but it's fun and really harmless.
The Witches (1990)
The Witches
With Roald Dahl's tale of mythic women who wish to rid the world of children taken to film, it's only natural that fans may get upset. They need not be frightened too much, as with Roald Dahl's humour and dark cruelty towards children from adults used throughout the film, the film stands strong.
The start works really well with a beautiful piece of music looking over the rooftops of Luke's (the central character)grandmother's home town. Then it turns out that his grandmother is teaching him about witches, before becoming overwhelmed by the death of his parents. His grandmother decides to return to England at a hotel where a convention of evil witches is taking place.
Angelica Huston as the Grand High Witch is simply astounding, with her performance showing the character with all the imagination that is held within her.
Mai Zetterling is favourable as Luke's grandmother who attempts to bring down the witch's hideous crimes.
The film is enchanting, adorable, frightening and funny and it's a treat for children. Although it can be quiet terrifying for very young children.
