The World of Henry Orient (1964)
The importance of this film (an opinion)
Just a thought. . .
This movie came out about the same time the Beatles were hugely popular in the U.S. The time was right for them, because a huge population of teenage girls were coming into adolescence and grappling with their sexuality (and the Beatles provided distraction after the JFk assassination). The Beatles were safe, and at a distance.
So was Henry Orient for Val and Marion.
Many of us created an image of the Beatles that was not real; Val Marion did the same with Henry.
What most of us could not do was follow the Beatles around. But we saw a lot of this on TV and in photos and I think we wanted to. Val and Marion's "adventurings" certainly inspired me.
Just a few thoughts, not very profound, maybe. But I think a lot of us (certainly anyone who has ever had a crush on a celebrity) can identify with this movie.
Until September (1984)
What a difference 20 plus years can make!
I saw this one in college my roommate dragged me to it and I enjoyed it. I watched it recently and found it boring and silly.
It's an attractive film (how can a film set in Paris be unattractive?). But the main character is a clueless bumpkin who is remarkably selfish. "Mo" is the kind of person who makes foreigners ridicule Americans. What Mo sees in Xavier and what he sees in her baffles me. He's a cold fish and she's a warm (albeit somewhat dull) and loving (if misguided) person. It would have been useful to flesh out his marital problems more thoroughly.
Still, it's a good film for exploring the differences between the French and Americans. The sex scenes are a bit gratuitous.
Vive Le difference. And vive La France.
