Mr. Brooks (2007)
An absolutely brilliant film
Kevin Costner. Not the first person who springs to mind as playing a serial killer, but boy, was that a great piece of casting. Playing the main character as a warm family man and well respected business man he makes mr Brooks a likable individual. Which makes the fact that he is a serial killer for whom killing is an addiction even more terrifying. The conversations he has with himself are exceedingly well done - especially as his mind generates a viewable image for him to discuss his kills and his future with. The whole cast are spot on. Demi Moore plays her character well and deserves more credit than other reviews here have given her. An excellent film with only one flaw. There is a gun fight towards the films end which feels at odds with the rest of the movie. Other than that this is an amazing film that you should definitely see :-)
The Haunted (1991)
Very effective ghost story
If you are expecting a gory, violent horror film look elsewhere because this is not it. This is an effective, nervy, creepy piece which relies on making the viewer feel uncomfortable. The acting is good for a TV movie and for the time has passable effects. The script whilst adequate is not earth shattering. All in all, sit alone in a dark room and watch this. Sure, you may laugh at the dated nature of all old TV movies but once finished, leave the lights off for a few minutes. Bet that shadow over in the corner starts to look like something else :-) There are similar ghost films. Some are better. Some are worse. Give this little gem a try - you won't regret it.
Basement (2010)
Not as DYER as its made out to be !
This film, it has to be said, is not one of the best movies I've ever seen. Having said that, there are a hell of a lot out there that are worse in every respect. Danny Dyer's acting skills are on par with his usual ability and are pretty well matched by the acting prowess of the rest of the cast. All suffer with the usual, overused problem of being characters who don't deserve us caring about them. There is one character who is so thoroughly obnoxious that I at least thought his death came way too late. The setting is quite effective in creating a sense of claustrophobia, being one narrow tunnel after another. The mystery of the killings and who is stalking the group is somewhat weak to say the least, as is the manner in which they arrive in the titular Basement. As long as you don't go into watching this film expecting to see something amazing, you wont be disappointed. It will leave you with questions that are not answered but to be honest you wont lose any sleep over it.
