Filmed on the Moffat Route in Colorado before the Moffat Tunnel was completed.
8 January 2014
This railroad was really named the Denver and Salt Lake Railway. This movie is a railfan's dream showing the extreme winter weather conditions on Rollins Pass and was filmed there and at Corona, the railroad town at the top of the pass (11,676 ft). The rotary snowplow scenes are a must see.

I saw it on its 75th anniversary at Denver's Paramount Theatre with the Mighty Wurlitzer Double Console Organ . What an experience! The movie premiered in Denver and was a major event in 1925.

The story is pretty exciting too. People are trapped at the summit by a blizzard and wait for help to arrive.

I wish it was available on DVD or VHS. I think there are only a few good prints left.

"Space guns don't kill you...

they only make you stiff." This is one of my favorite quotes from this movie from a boy who is certainly going to die along with everyone else aboard that TOPAC DC-4 bound from Honolulu to San Francisco.

The "granddaddy of all disaster movies" is how it used to be billed. And a real corny tear jerker it is. But it really keeps you on the edge of your seat (holding your live preserver and barf bag). This movie means a lot to me. I had the theme song played at my dad's funeral (he was an airline pilot).

And after 20 years it is going to be on TV again the Sunday! Thank you AMC and the estate of John Wayne! I can now throw away that lousy copy I got from e-bay. A great one from the "ancient pelican."
