Gravity (2013)
Gravity proves why someone has to go to the theater and experience a film and not just watch it...
Alfonso Cuarón has done it again... We have seen thrills in water, we have experienced chills in snow and air.. Now you will be at the edge of your seat when you see Sandra Bullock drifting in space.. Gravity is a movie about Matt Kowalski (George Clooney) and Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock)... One is an astronaut and the other an engineer working for NASA.. The excitement starts right from the word go where we see Matt spacewalking...Soon the Hubble Space Telescope, Mission Control in Houston confirms that Space debris from a Russian satellite has caused a chain reaction of destruction and they were instructed to abort the mission...The debris struck them before they could take any action killing all the crew members except Matt and Ryan.. Ryan was drifting in the space when Matt rescued her and tethered her to him so that they can move together...While they were moving the oxygen level of Ryan was decreasing..They planned to go the ISS (International Space Station).. In the way we get to know that Ryan's daughter died in an accident and Matt motivating her that they would survive..As they approached ISS they see that the crew has already left it with the Soyuz..Matt suggests that they could use the remaining Soyuz to go to the Chinese space station and use their Soyuz to go back to Earth.. While they were approaching the ISS the debris storm strikes again where Matt had to sacrifice himself to save Ryan... Ryan goes to the Chinese station after a lot of hick ups and manages to survive and return back to Earth.. As the movie progresses the excitement increases.. Brilliantly shot movie with a power packed performance by Sandra Bullock..Great camera work to show incredible pictures of earth at night and the sunrise.. Alfonso Cuarón's direction has proved gold in the past..He has shown the ultimate road trip(Y tu mama tambien), the fantasy world of Harry Potter (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban) and a brilliant science fiction (Children of Men).. Don't watch this movie in DVD or download it.. Go to a theater, get a 3D glass and experience space.. Where 2001: A Space Odyssey talked about evolution... I think Stanley Kubrick had the power to see the future and he saw Gravity coming...
Goynar Baksho (2013)
A story better to read than to watch...
I have not read the original novel... So cant comment on the adapted screenplay.. However when I watched the movie from the audience point of view I experienced people laughing and having a nice time on a Sunday evening... A movie for family to watch and think less because when you start thinking about the movie it will not be captured in your mind... The first reason is the length of the film that has been unnecessarily stretched... Repeated scenes and a flat middle half of the film...
Goynar Barsho(The Jewellery Box) is a story of the three generations of females and their lives and their struggle surrounding the Jewelery box that belonged to the eldest... The story starts with the first generation where the bride turns to a widow within one year of her marriage... she survived in the family due to the jewelery she carried with her in a box which she is not ready to give to anyone... she counts and wears the jewelery everyday... Soon her brother's son gets married and the new bride comes to the house(Konkona Sen Sharma), within few days the widow dies and gives the jewelery box to Konkona to hide it somewhere and not to use it herself... However the widow appears as a ghost in front of Konkona every time to make sure that her jewelery is safe and she is not using it or giving it to anyone... The widow's ghost goes to extremes to save the jewelery by paralyzing the elder bride in the house so that she cannot tell anybody else in the house where the jewelery box is... In the backdrop it is shown that the economic condition of the house is dropping and Konkona had to keep one item of jewelery in custody to give some amount to her husband to start a business.. The widow's ghost was furious at the beginning but eventually calms down when the business prospers and Konkona releases the item from custody.... Time goes by nd even our ghost is interested in the business because the name of the shop represents her name... This is where the movie goes flat... Later Konkona has a daughter who looks like the old widow... Her daughter grows up and now the ghost appears only to her... Her daughter joins the Bangladesh independence movement where she discovers the secret lover of her mother who has written poems for her mother and has committed suicide.... The film ends with one of his written poems... Where is the jewelery box???????? Konkona's daughter took all the jewelery... Film ends...
More than 2 hrs 15 minutes runtime... most of which was flat and lacked pace... Aparna sen(Director) tried to show everything in 2 hours... Starting from Independence of India and Bangladesh... Extra martial affair... A women's unsatisfied sex life... freedom movement... All these can be covered in a 200 pages novel, not a 2 hrs movie... The positives of the movie is the good camera work portraying the old Bengal and the rural Zamindar House.. The good cinematography and the mind blowing performance of Konkona Sen Sharma who proves that good acting can hold a film together... Other performances were also up to the mark... All in all a movie to go with your family to know how your ancestors were and how the generation changed... STATUTORY WARNING: NON BENGALIS MAY FIND THE LANGUAGE A BIT TOUGHT TO UNDERSTAND....
Hunger (2008)
A treat to see such a movie that will mesmerize you
Are you hungry to see a movie after which you will need some time to see the next one????? Watch Steve Mcqueen's Hunger.. You will know why Mcqueen has signed Michael Fassbender for his next venture Shame... A movie that will make you feel the pain and the struggle of a protest where the protestants have nothing but their own body to put on the line...
The movie is the reason and the 66 days hunger strike by Bobby Sands against the removal of Special Category Status... He led the Northern Irish Jail with him in the protest... The movie starts with Raymond Lohan washing his bloodied knuckles ... The next scene give us Gerry who protests against wearing the jail uniform... eventually sent off by the officers naked.. Bobby sands is seen with long hair and beard preparing for the protest... His girlfriend is providing him with essentials... Later officer Raymond shaves off his hair and beard forcefully and tortured all the men in the jail by beating them naked and searching their mouth to find anything suspicious... Next we see Bobby Sands talking with Father Dom (Liam Cunningham) about the morality of the hunger strike where Father tells him that hunger strike will be nothing but a suicide... However Sands is stubborn and eventually the strike begins on 1 March 1981... At the end we see the miserable condition of Sands.. he has bloody sores all over his body... he is almost a skeleton and he can barely stand... He dies on 5 May 1981 beside his mother after 66 weeks of hunger strike... the film depicts the election of Bobby Sands as a member of the British Parliament as an Anti H- Block/Armagh Political Prisoner candidate....
A movie with power packed performances and Michael Fassbender blowing your mind away in each scene as Bobby Sands... He has evolved as a refined actor... Steve Mcqueen's direction makes the movie silent and dark at moments where the tension and the intensity will be felt by the viewers as they watch.. The torture scenes were not over shown... The conversation between Sands and Father scene which was for almost at a stretch of 18 minutes was nicely shot... In short a film for all film lovers............
Rocky (1976)
The Legacy of ROCKY will not come to an end ever....
When you direct a movie with passion.. when you act in a movie with passion.. when you feel the character's passion in every word he says... thats right... you are watching John G. Avildsen's and Sylvester Stallone's Rocky... The film revolves around a neighborhood bum and boxer Rocky who talks to two turtle and a fish in his stinking house... He fights and works for a rookie Gazzo and collects money for him... He goes to a pet shop where he loves a girl named Adrian irrespective of her geek looks and her age.. He goes there to crack a joke in front of her to make her laugh.. Nothing is working out in his life.. he lost his locker in his boxing club that he used for six years to a new boxer.. his neighborhood thinks he is a dumb guy.. He has one friend Paulie(Adrian's brother) who nags in front of Rocky to take him to Gazzo for a job... Things changed from the night Rocky takes Adrian out on a Thanksgiving date when world heavyweight champion Apollo Creed's contender got injured and there was nobody who could take the place within 5 weeks... Apollo got interested in Rocky by his boxing name that was The Italian Stallion... Rocky was selected as his opponent.. He got his manager and he devoted himself in training... his unique style of training included punching dead and raw meat in the meat house... Adrian was his shadow helping him in each and every step to rise to the podium... Before the night of the match Rocky says Adrian that he knows he will not be able to defeat Apollo as the match is fixed... But he wants to go to the distance and when the final bell rings he wants to stand there and raise his hand... After the 15th and the final round bell Rocky stands and calls out for Adrian which shows his passion for the game and his love.... Rocky is a once in a lifetime movie that you can watch over and over again... Sylvester Stallone shaped the character right from the first scene to the last... His shadow boxing while walking, his way of cracking jokes his love towards animals, everything blows your mind... Well in short even after 37 years of the Apollo Creed and Rocky match we see and we cheer Rocky's every moves....
The Time Traveler's Wife (2009)
Excellent direction and good performances
Henry (Eric Bana) and Clare (Rachel McAdams) never made me feel that I am watching a fantasy love story.. Time traveler???? Come on who believes it??... However to be very honest watch it to believe it.. The story starts when Henry and Clare got married. But the set up of the story till the marriage is so well shown by the director that you will be glued with Henry and Clare. Henry is a time traveler who can travel through time and he carries nothing with him, not even his clothes. So the first thing he does is find clothes for himself.. He time travels and goes to Clare when she was a little girl and tells her that in future they will be best friends.. Clare grows up waiting for Henry who used to come once in a while and with a hope that when she will be grown up she will marry Henry... They were destined to get married and so it happens...Soon after that their life gets complicated... Henry disappears for two weeks and hardly spends time with Clare... However they cant stop loving each other... Clare gets pregnant and she loses her first baby...Henry decides that he does not need a baby because he does not want his child to get the same gene. However Clare gets pregnant again.. This time Henry time travels to the future and checks that they have a baby girl... They soon have their girl and thought of getting the perfect life... One day henry sees an image that he is down on the ground with a bullet.. He believes that he will die soon... Clare tries to stop the death and tries to ignore it but eventually Henry dies... The end scene shows their daughter is playing and henry appears while time traveling... Clare comes running and hugs Henry but he disappears....
Altogether an eternal love story that will make your day... Robert Schwentke's direction is excellent... Good adapted screenplay and editing that does not lose out at any point.. Rachel Mcadams is born to do romantic roles... The vow, Notebook and now this... Eric Bana was wonderful and never looked faded... Among the negatives was few scenes that looked repetitive and few unexplained scenes like the one where Henry was beating a guy or the relationship between Henry and his father that came from nowhere... But don't think about these when you can witness such love in 107 minutes....
The Reader (2008)
The Reader is performance driven movie
Last week I saw Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.. Steven Daldry has this quality of telling the story from quite a number of angles.. But the story loses its pace somewhere in between.. The reader is a movie that tells the story of Hanna Schmitz(Kate Winslet) and Michael Berg over a long period.. The movie starts off showing Michael preparing breakfast and it goes backwards where Michael met Hanna for the first time.. Hanna took him home where he was detected with fever.. He came back to Hanna when he recovered where the affair begins and the affair goes on and on and on... In between the affair Hanna expresses her likings to read books but she likes being read to rather that reading herself.. Michael reads her "The Odyssey," "Huck Finn" and "The Lady with the Little Dog." Despite the bond they shared Hanna disappears from Michael's life one day.. The story moves to the point when Michael is seen in law classes. The professor takes Michael to live court sessions where he sees Hanna is being trial-ed for murdering 300 lives during Nazi war crimes.. There Michael discovers the reason of Hanna not reading books herself.. Because she is illiterate.. He sees Hanna admits all the murders in order to keep the secret that she does not know how to write.. Hanna is imprisoned for life and Michael becomes a lawyer with a unsuccessful marriage and a daughter.. While in prison Michael sends Hanna recorded tapes of all the novels that helps Hanna to past time.. She used the tapes to learn reading and writing that helped her to write letters to Michael.. However Michael does not reply to her.. At the time when Hanna was to be released from prison Michael was her only contact.. Then we see the first confront of Michael and Hanna after the date Hanna disappears.. Michael told Hanna that he has got an apartment for her and a job that upsets Hanna because she expected that Michael would keep her with him... She did not see the Michael that she wanted to see which killed all her intentions to live and that made her commit suicide leaving a will for Michael.. She instructed Michael to give her money to the girl that survived the Nazi fire.. Michael does as she says.. The last scene shows Michael taking her daughter to the grave of Hanna and telling her the story of theirs...
A movie showing Nazi war crimes, illiteracy, a secret and intense love making needs a better treatment.. the relationship between Michael and Hanna never increased emotionally.. The story jumped from subject to subject.. the only thing that held the movie together was the performance of Kate Winslet and young Michael(David Kross).. Kate was good throughout the movie.. You will see the movie and think about it for 5 minutes.. it will not reach your heart.. Altogether a movie that could have been more emotional and more intense.. This is where I miss Clint Eastwood...
