The Ward (2010)
8/10
Great twist, shame the zombie ruined it..
8 October 2012
Warning: Spoilers
This movie had great potential but was ruined thanks to 'Zombie Alice'. I can't stand zombies. I find special effects aren't scary.. not knowing, not seeing, is always best. Apart from a couple of scenes that I find myself apologising to my friends for after I've told them the movie is worth a watch; "I know this part is ridiculous and you want to turn off but keep watching, it gets better again..", I think the movie is pretty good...

I really appreciated the complexity of the storyline and the twist. I really enjoyed how you pretty much thought it was just a dead girl haunting her friends in the psych ward for doing something mean to her, when really, you don't know anything at all until the very end. Nicely done. *spoiler* The fact that Kristen was actually Alice with multiple personality disorder and that when each character 'the other patients in the ward' were 'killed' by ghost Alice, it was just Alice's psyche trying to get rid of the other personalities that her psyche had fractured in to after her childhood trauma, so that 'Alice' 's personality could come back... I liked that. It made a good twist.

Amber Heard was great as Kristen and I especially liked the character's Emily and Zoey << well acted.

Unfortunately the film is left down by your typical crappy effects and average scares but I would definitely recommend this movie for a one time watch! (:

Exorcismus (2010)
10/10
Finally a DECENT film about possession and exorcism!
8 October 2012
I only watched this film because it starred 'Sophie Vavasseur'; and I loved her in 'Evelyn', although that was quite a few years ago...

Normally I can't stand exorcism movies. They all use pretty much the same story line, scares, dialogue and the same crappy makeup in order to portray the demonic possession. However, 'exorcismus' didn't. Without makeup and effects, the demonic possession is convincingly acted by the character 'Emma'; it is simply fantastic. Her acting, especially with her eyes is all you need to be convinced of her body invasion. I loved it. Sophie Vavasseur is such a talented actress.. even her British accent was flawless, considering she's Irish! Perfection. She's indeed very creepy at times.

Obviously, you can't have an exorcism film without a priest, the demon saying obscene things and a few deaths but I feel this film handed these things in such a way that it made it differ from the rest. I liked the twist.. that was good... I also really believed the family dynamic. This film was believable because their lives were so normal and mundane and they were still trying to act that way even though this 'demon' had possessed their daughter. I just found it incredibly believable unlike how it's portrayed in 'the exorcist.'

Overall, I really liked this movie. I liked the cast, the script, the twist, the fact it was a British Production; everything about it. I already recommended it to a friend and she thought the same as me.. the acting on Sophie's part was brilliant.

Watch it!

ParaNorman (2012)
10/10
Stop-frame animation is always worth a watch!
23 September 2012
I'm twenty one and went to see this movie with a friend. To be honest, we only went to see it as we had a 2 for 1 voucher but nevertheless, we were in hysterics at this film and we found ourselves quoting it days later. The last stop-frame animation movie I saw was Coraline, and that was both creepy and genius. ParaNorman was both genius and hilarious with a hint of darkness and creepiness towards the end.. "I don't want to go to sleep, and you can't make me!!!" All of the voices were well cast but I especially like Tucker Albrizz as Neil and Anna Kendrick as Courtney. Pretty hilarious.. With some teen/adult humour for the older ones and the obvious laughs and humour for the younger ones, this film is a must-see! It may be a little scary for small sensitive children but mostly it's fun to watch and trust me adults, you will have the occasional laugh. I give this movie 10 out of 10 because a lot of hard work was put in to this picture.. and they did a great job. Check out some of the films B -rolls on youtube too.. pretty interesting.

Now Is Good (2012)
10/10
British cinema at its best.
23 September 2012
In my opinion, this movie deserves 10 out of 10. Some reviews say that Dakota Fanning's portrayal of a terminally ill teenager with cancer wasn't 'convincing' however, I beg to differ. The personality Dakota derived for 'Tessa' is just perfect. She's angry and sarcastic, rude to her loved ones and doesn't let any one in. Her take on playing this role was just fantastic. You believe she's ill because of how she acts, not because of how many times they remind you she's dying, how many days she has left, her short hair and her pale appearance; those aspects just add to the character. This movie is being compared to 'A walk to remember' which, I can see the resemblance to of course; but this film isn't just about a bucket list or romance or just about cancer; it's about how it can make the individual person suffering really feel. I can't really explain in words why I thought it was so good. I just know that I was in tears at the end and I'm not usually one for crying at movies. I think it was seeing that hard shelled character Tessa eventually breakdown at the end after seeing her hold it in for so long. The realisation that she was dying is something that I felt the audience connect to. When the nurse explained what it would feel like to die over the course of the next few days to Fanning's character 'Tessa', you could hear a pin drop. It was perfect, realistic and Dakota was phenomenal. I also am proud that this film was a British production. After hearing Dakota's British accent in the trailer, I was a little worried that it would be hard to bare whilst watching the film, however, it was well spoken on her part and I thought she did an excellent job. I really did like this film. The casting was fantastic and so was the characterisation and family dynamic. It was great to see a typical teenagers response to leukaemia. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Please go and see it whilst it's in cinemas. I'm definitely buying this on DVD. (:

The Possession (I) (2012)
8/10
It's not your average 'lets walk down the stairs backwards and puke over a priest' possession movie!
23 September 2012
I was on holiday visiting my friend in Sacramento, California, and we decided to go to the movies. Our choice was between this movie and another called 'The Apparition'. We opted for this one as creepy kids always seem to make a horror movie much more appealing. Usually, I avoid possession films. I can't even force myself to consider 'the exorcist' a horror classic. I just think possession and exorcism films are always poorly done and are slightly altered versions of each other. However, seeing the trailer of this film beforehand made me want to see this movie and again, the little girl Emily 'Natasha Calis' drew me in. I thought this film had an interesting storyline which kept me gripped throughout and superb performances by the cast, especially Natasha Calis who portrays the little girl Emily who is possessed throughout the film. Without giving away any spoilers, I felt the ending was well done and made me leave the theatre thanking the screenplay writer for a non-stereotypical ending - well done! This film is definitely worth a watch. I may even buy it on DVD when it's released. It's not your average 'lets walk down the stairs backwards and puke over a priest' possession movie. It's well acted, well written and well worth a see. It has some jumpy moments for those who aren't desensitised to the ways of a horror movie but mainly it's gripping and you want to find out what's in that box.. GO SEE IT! I hope to see the young cast in some more films in the future! Loved it!

The only reason I watched; Jennifer Lawrence.
23 September 2012
I am horror/thriller movie fanatic. 95% of the movies I see are of that genre and so I know a good horror film when I see one. However, there are obviously differences of opinion and people like and appreciate different aspects of horror.. Some like a good twist, some like 'in your face gore' and some people just like a good scare. In all honesty I'm desensitised to these movies but I watch them for fun. "The House at the end of the street" is a film that I only wanted to see purely because of the talent that is Jennifer Lawrence. Nevertheless, saying that, I really enjoyed the film. At first I thought it was pretty predictable but I soon realised it was too obvious to not have a twist and so I liked how the film unfolded. It was clever..maybe not ingenious, but clever enough for a gasp or two when the plot unravelled. Did the movie grip me the entire way through? Yes, but it wasn't so much the suspense, as once you know the twist, it's pretty predictable.. but Jennifer's performance as Elissa kept me watching. There weren't any 'jumpy' 'scary' moments, it was just an edgy thriller with a good enough plot to keep it sustained for ninety minutes. I'd recommend going to see it as it is a good film for a one time watch, but I couldn't watch it again. I'd rate it 8/10 purely on the casting and the plot twist.
