Roadkill (2022)
Promising but ultimately disappointing
The first half of this movie is mind numbing. The plot drags and most of the scenes feel like pointless filler. If it was up to me the first half would be condensed to 15 minutes. I would have stopped the movie had I not been at the cinema. We decided to stick it out and it did pick up. Things started to get interesting enough that the acting and dialogue didn't get in the way of the intrigue. The ending (the last 5 minutes or so) however really disappointed. It was frustrating and the exciting drama from moments before fell apart.
I don't regret going to see the movie. It had a great sequence using clever shots to hide information and interesting uses of showing where events took place in the timeline. There were a few points that genuinely felt like great film but that just made the rest of the point all the more disappointing. I wouldn't recommend this movie but I would be interested in seeing the director's future work. The plot isn't anything new but the directing does put some life into it and there was enough to keep me curious about what would happen.
So maybe don't run to see this but keep an open mind for what may come next!
Les affamés (2017)
Just missed the mark.
The cinematography in this is actually really lovely. It's a well shot movie and the way it's done would usually be something I really like. But it was a bit of a flop everywhere else. I was a little invested in some characters, but the plot was non existent. The lore seemed like it could be cool but it was never explained. It just felt like it didn't really achieve what it was going for which is a shame. A bit of a boring watch, but I wouldn't say I completely wasted my time at least...
The Great Gatsby (2013)
Do Not Be Deceived By My Rating
This movie... okay, it wasn't terrible. It was a pretty decent movie to watch and got the main concepts of the book across well. But I just can't stop myself from feeling a little irritated when I watch it. There are things about it that I just think weren't done right and that kind of brought all my feelings about the movie down. I think my biggest, angriest problem with this was how much it didn't seem like the 1920s. The music was the biggest thing about this. In a movie representing a story of the past, I do not want to hear loud party music from the time we live in. It just pisses me off. I know a lot of people have blabbered on to me about 'modern interpretation' and blah blah but it wasn't actually set in the present day so why is it using present day music? It doesn't accentuate any point. In fact it hid the feel of that era and smashed any sort of hope I had for really enjoying this movie. Then there was the way some of them spoke. It just didn't sound right. Gatsby was often enough perfect (Leonardo DeCaprio always nails these roles) but often enough the rest of the cast didn't really perfect that talk. Maybe it was the writers. All I know was that the lines from the book were done in an alright way. Nick reading out what he had written didn't really do it for me either. It wasn't read in a tone I liked. Maybe it was just a little airy for me. I know that's kind of a stupid thing to nag about but I really wanted to love this movie. I'd heard such great things. There were other things, small things that I won't get into. But mostly it was just how un-1920s it was. It made me miss the book and want to bitch about it (which I guess is done now). I'm glad a lot of people like it but I just can't. I recommend watching it though as I'm sure a lot of people will still enjoy what I could not. The actors did decent jobs too and the uses of setting were sometimes perfect. It wasn't my favourite movie but it wasn't anywhere near my least favourite either.
