Hellraiser (2022)

Grew up loving Hellraiser, and I loved this.
13 October 2022
Hellraiser was my favorite horror film growing up, and pinhead is always been my favorite horror icon. I've seen this film twice and loved it just as much both times. It's a far more in-depth look at lore, lots of fantastic acting, great visuals, and brutal treatment with chains. The new hell priest and the cenobites are perfect. I want a trilogy in this universe. I know it's the popular thing to do to gatekeep movies that we grew up with, but you got to know when to put nostalgia away and watch something like it's new. And if I had seen this movie at the same age I was when I saw the original, I'd be just as big a fan of Clive Barker and his creation.

Honestly it's great, beautiful martial arts galore
4 September 2021
Haven't been much of a Marvel guy even with their biggest event films, but Shang Chi is solid. Story moves quick, lots of great characters, almost nonstop action scenes, and a finale that they hid from the trailers. I was definitely way more into it than I thought I'd be. Props to the team on this one!

Fresh Blood enters the Zombie Arena, and I dig it!
3 June 2021
Caught this film in theaters, and I watched it once more since with friends on Netflix, and honestly the more I think about it, the more I like it. Great cast, fun atmosphere that isn't without it's share of emotional stakes and a visual language that sets it apart. I'm really glad Netflix is investing in more, I can't wait to see the sequels!

Excellent
9 January 2021
Actually found this show in between seasons of The Last Kingdom and loved it. Beautifully shot, wonderful cast of actors who routinely give stellar emotional performances each episode, and a classic tale of opposing Rome. Finished season 1 and immediately expected a season 2. Hope we get one!

Gorgeous shots, great action adventure vibe, solid shark kills. Way better movie than you expect if you saw DBS 2 (Which was awful)

A beautiful space epic about the true journey of depression
15 June 2020
'Ad Astra' was a film I knew nothing about going in, and i'm glad I went in blind. It was visually gorgeous with nail biting set pieces, but the story hit me in just the right spot. It takes a good script for you to hear voice over in lieu of dialogue and not feel like you're being cheated, and this script was, in my mind, excellent. It's a vibe-y film that spends a lot of time in silence, and if you're like me you'll really appreciate the time it takes to develop the emotional and visual severity. On its surface it's a space epic, but in its heart it will speak to victims of depression, as well as anyone who's ever spent years feeling like they didn't belong. It takes a journey greater than most are wiling to take to find your deepest demons and confront them. Absolutely loved it.

A demonic acid trip
11 January 2020
Caught this flick in the theater and it was like a demomic acid trip. All the greatest hits of an excorcism film with a schizophrenic dash of flavor that ooozes atmosphere and massive creep factors. Dug the creature design and the visuals were gorgeous.

"It takes everything for a bit of knowledge"
8 October 2019
In a world of remakes, The Nightmare Gallery is very certainly it's own brand of weird. A surreal vintage-gothic style flick with occultist driven storyline played out over a series of nightmares that lead our hero closer and closer to exactly what she'd always thought she wanted to find. If you're a fan of slowburn gothic flicks like 'The Ninth Gate' or 'Angel Heart' than this movie is DEFINITELY your speed, right down to the visuals and music it truly feels like one of those films that the weird kids (I should know, I was one of them) would have passed around DVD's of to watch in each other's dorm rooms on movie night. For guys and gals like me that bears a special kind of nostalgic essence, one I wouldn't expect to experience watching a movie in 2019. If that's your bag, then grab your ancient scrolls, light some candles, pop some popcorn, and check out 'The Nightmare Gallery'

Negative reviews seem over the top and staged
11 July 2018
This show hits some very strong points on family values, the struggle of right and wrong, and what it means to be an ethnic American that only identifies with and loves America. The acting is fantastic for this type of show, and it's no more over the top or cheesy than The Flash or The Arrow, in fact is has way less melodrama and weak plot lines. The action vfx are solid, the costume is solid, the storyline is solid. If you're a DC fan and you love superheroes, this is a great show to put on.

12 Angry Men meets Glen Gary Glenn Ross with a revenge story twist you don't realize is on the way the whole time. Honestly loved the claustrophobic evolving atmosphere and the acting was fantastic.

Conspiracies abound
9 July 2018
Dialogue heavy and story focused, this film sets government and pharmaceutical conspiracy theories and sets two heroes on a race to expose the truth. Rooted in independent research with noticeable political thriller influences, the story could definitely have been convoluted on paper, but the choice to frame the information against easily digestible sequences and minimalist shooting style makes it more of a conversation with the viewer. A conspiracy mystery cat and mouse adventure.

Jack Jovcic is fantastic
9 July 2018
Emotional crime drama that focuses more on the lasting effects of criminal decisions, Jack Jovcic gives a fantastic performance with all the subtle nuances of a man who just wants to everyone get a fair shake in the end. Not a spoiler but one of my favorite parts was the subplot about Jovan's parents.

Super Hero Origin story on steroids
4 July 2018
Most times when you watch a movie that has to do with powers you'll get about ten minutes in the beginning of the film and then we move into the usual suspect story beats we've all seen. This film is much different. It's like a SuperHero origin story on steroids. The movie is a trip, and we spend most of the time in a first hand experience of the main character Joe as his life is manipulated and mutilated to turn him into something greater. Honestly I had no idea what to expect going into this, but I've never really seen a movie like this before, but I really dug it. Fresh concept, emotional acting, tripped out script. Happy I checked it out, hopefully they get to do more with the concept!

The countryside home you DON'T want to stumble into

Darkly written, claustrophobic, and carried by two great actors. Very much enjoyed the twists and turns The Redeeming had to offer!

Like a fever dream

Loved it. Simple, Complicated, Visceral, Vulnerable, Intense. A fantastic movie for the young artist trying to find themselves, or even those of you out there still exploring who you are sexually. Like a fever dream with a clearer path.

"You can have all the talent in the world, but if you don't use it . . ."
4 July 2018
'29 to Life' is a classically endearing goofball comedy akin to a Bill Murray style hero getting his feet underneath him and finding a sense of direction in his otherwise cavalier life. If you're a fan of Happy Madison productions this will undoubtedly tickle your fancy as we watch Barnaby fall short of his career as a Chef and ruthlessly roast everyone who points that out (save for one kid who can dish it back) Personally, I found the real treasure of this film to be Diana Cristina. Her heartwarmingly charming portrayal of Madison really gets the story moving and gives you that classic foil, the real hero who brings out the good guy in every goofball! Some absolutely charming moments to a tale you know and love!

One man's highest highs and lowest lows from his own distrusting and twisted perception
3 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Very interesting film. The story beats reminded me of a Danny Boyle-esque presentation where we get to see one man's highest highs and lowest lows from his own distrusting and twisted perception. The opening sequence shows a wild boar attacking Altin in a dream, and I believe that serves as a powerful metaphor for the story here. A man who stumbles into a wild world he was unprepared for and finds himself barreled over by it and unable to defend himself from its snares (fame, pressure, and fortune). Special note for the macabre parade sequence, which was hands down one of my favorite visual sequences in this indie art house character study.

Interesting start to what is hopefully a longer series.
15 February 2018
Interesting start to what is hopefully a longer series. I got the sense while watching that this particular doc was covering one angle of a much larger body of information, focusing mainly on the light spectrum and how an understanding of that leads to re interpretation of various objects we see in motion within existing NASA footage. The project has a very ground level journalist sense to it, and I imagine it took a whole lot of hustle for a younger team to get into the rooms that they did and get the interviews and footage necessary to put this piece together, I sincerely hope to see more productions from them as they explore deeper into thus unanswered questions. If you're a fan of extraterrestrial investigations and similar brands of mystery solving journalism, or even just a sci fi buff, this is certainly a piece to watch and a documentary production team to follow.

The mark of a strong storyteller on their way up
9 February 2018
Whole lot of gritty visual style and a killer soundtrack wrapped in what felt like an indie filmmaker's homage to an amalgam of Nicolas Winding Refn storytelling/Guy Ritchie set ups/and classic crime film Tarantino. Virtually none of the scenes in the film will end the way you expect them to, the mark of a strong storyteller on their way up. Stoked to follow them and see what's next!

A flawed love put on trial
1 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The View From Here is an interesting Indie romance film. Most indies you find lean in the direction of youth and the semi glorification of irresponsibility. When done right it's hilarious and poignant, when done wrong its cliche and tends to skim surface level emotions and lean on 'hipster-esque' comedy to pull it through. TVFH seems to start from a much more 'grown up' standpoint instead, where most of the drama initially comes from two young adults and the rigors of their individual career choices, then slowly works its way into relationship issues and finally builds to something more deep from their individual pasts. It's about two people but more than anything it appears to be about their flawed love story. Every so often a comedy beat will make you feel like what you're watching is a rocky romance coming to fruition, but several heavy performances in certain key scenes by both of the leads will definitely dispel you of that notion. Dorée Seay is positively magical and Kellen Garner carries the weight of Mark's mistakes on steady shoulders throughout the film. If you've ever had a relationship crumble, you'll find kinsmanship with this film.

I want more more more!
18 November 2017
I want a Justice League 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. For now I'll settle for a longer Director's cut. That was a cartoon from my childhood come to life with heart. If you're a comic book reader it felt so good. The opening bits were definitely a bit rocky but some of those early scenes were straight out of the new 52 Justice League comics. Once it gets rolling with the team it was a giant piece of fan service. Fun and heartfelt : ) Honestly, don't take the critics word for it, see if for yourself. It was fantastic : )

Hell of a Sci-Fi Fantasy epic
7 February 2015
OK, here we go. I don't know why, probably because a bunch of pretentious folks at Sundance badmouthed it, but this film is going to be trendy to dislike. The movie didn't even come out before people were scoffing at it down their noses. I'm kind of a fan of original sci fi films, and the cast, so I was stoked to check it out. This movie was awesome. I can't even imagine the ridiculous amount of creative work that went into designing such a multi faceted world, complete with interesting technology, styles, creature designs, characters, the works. It was beautiful to look at, and anyone that's a part of the film world should know that not a single pixel, prop, or thread of clothing makes it to set without passing under the eyes of tons of creative minds, so believe me when I tell you more original creative thought went into this movie then you'll have the attention to notice. The conflict is topical, complicated but not hard to follow, has high stakes, and is grounded in the reality of a capitalistic gain. The characters are fun, some will feel very familiar to fans of sci fi/fantasy worlds, and some are very fresh. The performances are great and interesting to watch, the action is extremely well choreographed, the plot is easy to follow, and the film is long enough that we get a full sense of the immensity of the world they created. As it is, in an age where everything that kills the box office is either a remake or based on a book/comic/cartoon, I think it's really cool to see an original sci fi film stand on its own two legs and tell an epic story. I Loved it.
