The First Movie (2009)
Beautiful, moving and a completely new image of the world
One of the most beautiful and moving works of art I have ever seen. The movie shows a small village in Irak where the filmmaker shows the children classic movies for children and then gives the children camera's to film their own lives and their own stories. The life of the village, its past and dreams all come out through the eyes of its children. It leaves you with the knowledge that though its horrors are very visible even in this out of the way place Iraq is beautiful, its children are wise and funny and that the visual of men gathered in a mosque can be a sight of pleasant community life, of softness and safety, and if that isn't a reversal of expectation nothing is.
Ripley's Game (2002)
Beautiful and gripping
It took me a while to see this film because I couldn't believe it would compare favorably to the wonderful "The Talented Mr Ripley" but now that I've finally seen it I have to say it's just as good. It's a more cynical, much older Ripley we see here, but the story is every bit as gripping and the painful emotional undercurrent is still there. Having said that, damn is it beautiful! There are some shots, especially during that wonderful night of waiting at Ripley's estate, that all by themselves make me want own this. The music is perfect, absolutely perfect. I just hope the soundtrack does it justice.
All that, and you get to watch John Malkovich!
