Into the Night (1985)
Just go with the flow
The main character of this film is dissociating from his entire life. Ed can't sleep, he's unfocused at work, he's dispassionate towards his wife. He feels like an alien who was placed here by some cruel cosmic accident. In other words, he's suddenly awake; not just literally (due to his insomnia) but figuratively as well.
A coworker suggests to Ed that he take the red eye to Vegas, get wild and get laid, then he'll feel right as rain. Ed seems to brush him off, but that night when he can't sleep, he ends up at the airport. Is he going to take that red eye? He just sits there in the parking lot, and suddenly-- a plot appears.
Ed doesn't neurotically hand-wring and over-analyze everything, however. In fact, he doesn't even seem to care. He just goes with the flow. Barely reacts to anything. A girl in danger, needs a ride. He helps out.
Next thing he knows, he's dragged into this world of Hollywood, mobsters, jewel smuggling, and land deals. He's a spectator in life, who finally joins in and participates.
The film is a stream of consciousness exercise in presence. It's zen buddhism in full display.
Sure, there's other reasons to watch this film. It's funny, there's nudity, plenty of star power. Cameos by over a dozen directors, as well as half a dozen Playboy playmates. But underneath those thin outer layers of stunt casting and frosting, there's a really substantial film here.
A character study of an empty life, and the question: where does coincidence end and fate begin? Are you the passenger or the driver of your life? Do things happen TO you, or are you an active participant?
Frankie Go Boom (2012)
Funnier than it has any right to be
Frankie Go Boom is a film that's acted like a drama, but written like a comedy.
Within the film, the main characters' dynamic is that of a director, actor, and writer. Each provokes the other into drastic actions and then resents them for their behavior. The stories they tell are serious but acted in a goofy comedic way; the exact opposite of the execution of the outer story. It's absolutely absurd to structure a film that way, a movie about the making of movies about their real life inspirations.
It's an often abused turn of phrase, but this movie is truly a deconstruction of the movie making process. What if an over the top a rom com was actually purely based on one person's real life. Would their life be funny? Or tragic?
I think it's just awesome. This writer is brilliant, y'all.
