Chaman Bahaar (2020)
Top notch script, screenplay, direction, acting
Please avoid this movie at all cost if you like glamorous films (e.g. Where Pooja is referred to as Poo, or names such as Shanaya is paired with a Malhotra khaandaan - you get my point). If you have had any experience of living or growing up in the suburbs / rural India - you will appreciate this film. No, it's not there to preach a moral - just a simple story. But makes you ponder deeply.
The day star kids (nepo category) sit on a dusty rural road, and hug a street dog for a film - we will know hindi films have found refreshing scripts again. Till then, we will have to quench our thirst with occasional masterpieces such as Chaman Bahaar. Well done team.
The Zoya Factor (2019)
Do Indians still like formula films?? NOPE
Overacting, forced humour, juvenile script.
I wonder if such formula films make enough money to encourage directors and producers to continue making such mediocre films.
Sonam Kapoor has done exactly the same role as all her other films. She should do something different otherwise she has been put in a typecast of acting, which is now irritating to watch.
Story is good, but could have been made in a taut and much better way.
Laal Kaptaan (2019)
One of the most underrated hindi films
Was always intrigued by the title, so one day when this film was spotted on Amazon Prime - we decided to give it a go. The storyline is simple (revenge), but the build up of characters is amazing. Cinematography, locations, scenic beauty and believe-ability is top notch. Usually, Hindi films may lack believe-ability quotient (either poor script writing or poor execution/editing), but Laal Kaptaan scores on all these points. Saif Ali Khan has delivered one of his finest performances, but he has not overshadowed other actors in this film. In other words, each actor has delivered a powerful performance oh their own.
A must watch, if you like quality and not a masala film. The cherry on top is the soundtrack (especially the end credit song - Lahu Ka Rang Kara). Would like to see a sequel to this.
