Spanglish (2004)
Good but could have been better
i enjoyed this movie a lot. i think paz vega steals the show as her restrained and sweet nature makes her very captivating. however, all of the actors were spectacular- especially leoni, who is so convincing in her terribly annoying role that you can't help but hate her.
my only complaint about this film is that it's a little long and the ending was unsatisfying. i understand they rewrote the ending because test audiences didn't like what they originally had- and you get the feeling they wrote it on a whim. it kind of leaves all of the characters, but two, on a major cliffhanger and tries to end on a, "always be proud of who you are" note while ignoring that we are dying to know what happens in the story. they don't tell us.
though unstructured at the end, this film is a joy to watch and a touching experience.
Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star (2003)
Sweet
this film is incredibly sweet. i sat down to watch it expecting to see another stupid, money making blockbuster but it was anything but that. David spade gives a hilarious and endearing performance as a man trying to find himself and what he feels is important in life. roberts, terra, and boyd, the supporting actors, are lovable and the children give wonderful performances. i hope we see more of them in the future.
i recommend this to anyone who enjoys a feel good comedy. it's full of laughs but most significantly is based around the importance of family and the belief that it's okay to be yourself. it starts out with a lot of comedy but gradually introduces more serious topics while still staying light and enjoyable.
Vampire Journals (1997)
Trashy yet funny
I gave this a 2 simply because I enjoyed looking at the sets in the movie, and that was pretty much it. There was about one joke in the film that made me laugh, and everything else I found funny because it was so ridiculous.
This is a cheap rip off of "Interview with the Vampire" as in: thriving in eternity, basking in immortality control freak and mean vamp teases the woe-is-me, I will never be human again pathetic vamp. The crucial differences here are that "Interview with the Vampire" is a very respectable film whilst "Journals" looks like something a bunch of high schoolers binded together for a school play.
Zachary (Gunn) is a self-pitying guiltaholic who is travelling the world on a quest of revenge. Killing humans depresses him but killing other vampires doesn't phase him, mind you, as he is self loathing and feels no loyalty to his kind anymore. In the beginning, you see another vampire named Ash (Morris) that looks like a drugged, washed up rock star old man, kill Zachary's female companion, setting Zachary off on his journey to find Ash and claim his vengeance by killing him and all of his offspring.
Predictability ensues. Zachary finds Ash, but a woman gets in the way, the woman both of the vampires want, a repetition of their last dilemma except this time Zachary is determined not to lose.
You can't take this movie seriously at all, but it's almost one of those "so bad it's almost good" movies that you can only bear to watch once. The acting is very cliché, the dialogue is corny, the plot isn't that interesting, and the characters you like are the schemers that have it in for the ones who are supposed to be the heroes of the movie. If you're a patient person I suggest watching it if you're intoxicated and you have absolutely nothing else to watch and it's a dire emergency.
But like I said, the sets are cool.
The Paper Boy (1994)
Disturbing
i saw this movie as a child and i don't have very fond memories of it- that is, it really scared me. i'm sure if i watched it again now that i'm older i wouldn't feel so creeped out about it. i remember quite a few scenes vividly- the main character is a twisted boy who kills without regard but whom nevertheless forms a strange bond with a younger girl next door. as i recall, people start to catch on to what he's about and the ending is a real bloodbath.
this movie isn't for the faint of heart, but if you like stories about psycho killers and gruesome murders, then by all means, rent this movie, the paperboy won't disappoint you.
Thirteen (2003)
different for everyone
i think this film will mean a lot more to people who have had similar teenage years as the girls in the film. i did not grow up in a city and my world is quite different from the one in this movie, so i can't even imagine living that way, but the movie did affect me very much. i found it to be depressing, but i got frustrated that the movie didn't go further into the girls' minds. they obviously had a lot of underlying issues that the movie didn't even get into. and it was clear they were covering up their pain with drugs, sex, and trying to fit in- but WHY, i wish we knew more about. still, it's a very depressing and moving film.. and not with an ending that i expected, but i'm glad they ended it on a realistic note and didn't cop out at the end. recommended for more mature viewers.
Hidalgo (2004)
Melodramatic
i did not like this film, i made fun of it the whole time. i thought the storyline was ridiculous (and they don't even know if it really happened in the first place) and the acting was horrible. viggo's lips were chapped the entire time and i just wanted to attack him with lip balm. i hated the woman as she was way too dramatic and i think viggo's character would have deserved to have been circumsized. also WTF kind of punishment is that? how can you show a scene like that, with an old man dying to cut off another man's testicles with another man injecting random questions about some cowboy and not find it hilariously funny?
the only thing i liked about this movie were the horses. gorgeous! two thumbs up for the horses. it would have been better if it was just about them and there were no actors in it, frankly. don't see this movie you'll be wasting two hours of your life.
oh yeah and the "christian woman" was a retard, they could have redeemed the entire movie if they had killed her in the end and taken away her stupid hat, geez.
Hellboy (2004)
entertaining
i enjoyed watching this film, it's a great summer movie. the only complaint i have is that i thought it dragged at the end, but thankfully they stopped before all the action got repetitive. the action, by the way, was otherwise always very well done and suspenseful. and can i just say that i thought Kroenen stole the show? don't get me wrong, hellboy is great, but that guy's skills with the knives was quite distracting.
the romance in this movie was well played out too- they delved into it enough so that we cared, but not too much so that we got sick of it- it remained simple enough to be touching. the humor and the fight sequences really made the film though, but i'm sure everyone got something different out of it, and that's whats so great about hellboy. see it!
