Replikator (1994)
Tiny 13 Wrong title
Tiny 13 must be thinking of another title in his review. He says the film he finds so so bad stars Michael Pare, who is not to be seen in this picture. I'd say Replikator has a pretty decent cast, Ned Beatty, Bridget Bako, Lisa Howard, La Cicciolina (!)in a 'tong in cheek' bit, -it's pretty cool babe-wise, and a funky tech-noir look that was more than a bit ahead of ahead of it's time in 1993. (The Justice channel bit is a cool concept and is still funny now. Compare this film shot for about a million bucks to Jonhny Neumonic for 30 million bucks at the same time and I'd say you see why this little picture stays cult in many countries while the other, we'll, n'uff said.
For a cool look and good edge on a low budget before everyone else beat the look to death I give this an 8 or a 9.
Hope they come out with a wide screen re-mastered on DVD. (An interview with La Cicco wouldn't hurt
Ice Planet (2001)
Epic Sci-fi
Even if this is not a perfect movie, it's packed with powerful ideas (isn't that what sci-fi is supposed to be) and some spectacular effects and Special FX locations. After an attack by an unknown alien entity on a series of human outposts in the solar system, a crew is thrown thru a time-space portal in an alien world where ancient alien conflicts set the agenda - what's cool (besides really great special FX battle scenes), is how haunting much of the film is, and how different the new world is.
The acting isn't the greatest in all places although some of it is just fine. Wes Stdi seemed not to have a director -probably there could have been a better choice for the lead. Still, independent pictures that have ambition are the heart of an exciting time in movie-land. This film meets that test.
Great concept, great originality.
Drop Dead Roses (2001)
Refreshing and Drop Dead Original
OK it has some hiccups, but this is fun. It rings true, Brian O'Halloran (Clerks) is GREAT. The film is funny and youthfully energized -it's good in that first time film-makler way. Fresh.
Wish it was longer in Cinemas. Not boring, really funny bits. Music track is often cool if a bit underground. I don't understand why there aren't more mainstream reviews of this picture.
What's more is this is a guy film by a female director writer. Just enough to give it some cool sensibilities. By the way Eddie McGee of Big Brother (the original) fame is really rather good, natural, and this Barbie has a lovely slutty edge -would like to see her in something else too..
