The Departed (2006)
Decently condensed edition of Hong Kong's Infernal Affairs.
For many years I had been avoiding The Departed, for deep down I knew I am always going to be biased towards the original trilogy, The Infernal Affairs.
I finally decided to give The Departed a shot, out of mostly boredom during the Covid-19 pandemic and respect for Martin Scorsese's past brilliant works led me to think I could be wrong. Well, this is not a terrible film per se. I can't quite recall the last good gangster film ever since Pulp Fiction and Goodfellas. But Martin Scorsese's past productions are much better than this.
I would implore anyone who likes this film to give the original trilogy a shot. The characters are multi-faceted, and the character developments is well-paced. There's a real sense of conflict and grief in the IA, whereas the Departed has been watered down to some clever sleight of hands from both moles and lots of mind numbing violence.
