Hello I Must Be Going (2012)
Thought this was really good and understated
"Hello I Must Be Going" offers a great lead performance by Melanie Lynskey, who is understated and yet very funny, propelled by a sense of mirth as opposed to firing off jokes and bounding down the halls of slapstick. This is not a film that shouts at you, but one that let's you in on a personal story and takes you on a meaningful journey. And to be sure, a script involving depression, divorce, coming-of-age and older-younger romance definitely could have resulted in hackneyed crap - there are so many lesser films that grab one of these subjects only to whittle it down to a hapless cliché. But here we are treated to a finely tuned portrayal of the nuanced evolution in the main character's life, and her relationship with her parents. It's an enjoyable, original film that uses dry humor to make nice with serious topics in a manner that reflects our own tendencies.
