Hostel (2005)
See it....BUT....
...don't let the trailers totally mislead you. This film IS very suspenseful and frightening heightened by the fact that it's based on actual events. Where it is flawed, however, is in the prolonged time wasted on the hedonist lifestyle of these travelers in Europe. I know the film makers pour on the T & A to entice a certain demographic but I feel real horror fans would rather, if the film had to lean one way or the other, lean toward time spent on the horrific instead of drug use and sex. Wait a minute.....you can stop throwing rocks at the computer now. Some decadence is good but, keep the film true to its genre. Bottom line...the film, finally, hits the mark and is definitely worth the cost of a (matinee) ticket. I'm positive I know the folks who will hate this film the most. It's the tourism boards of any Eastern European country whose name ends in "solvakia" or "istan". No offense meant BUT...that area is just plain creepy. Creepy people with creepy habits, creepy places and creepy forms of "entertainment". See for yourself but bring some band-aids. You'll definitely feel the urge to use one or two.
King Kong (2005)
So What If Grown Men Cry!
What a great film. What makes this grown man cry is that it's just a shame that today's great films are also the great films of yesteryear. Whoa..! Yesteryear? My gray is probably showing. At any rate, when will young writers create and be fortunate enough to release films of such quality with NEW subject matter? Oh well, as long as epics like "King Kong" vintage 1933, "Titanic" and scores of others are in the film archives the newbies have fodder for exposing the fresh talent and filmography of today. But, I've digressed. "Kong" may be kind of long and schmaltzy but what's not to love about a huge macho GO-rilla loser with the hots for Watts? I find myself in that category as well and maybe that's another reason why I'm crying. More to the point, the film is great on several levels and it takes place on good old "Skull Island" here on our planet and not in outer space or some castle in "Neverland". Not to be confused with the one owned by Michael Jackson even tho both are scarier than hell.
Bottom line....see it and you'll agree and be, long on "Kong".

"A Star Is Born"
The film just plain old "sucks"...HOWEVER...Billie Schaeffer is a thing dreams are made of. Too bad her career never took off as I could tell she was a true Thespian at heart. Who knows where or what she's up to now but I'll bet a dollar to a donut there's still grease-paint running thru her veins. If she had received a slab of cement in front of that famous Chinese theater in Hollywood it might have read "Stardoms loss was oblivions gain". I hope to view her again in a film before that big director in the sky yells..."CUT"...for the final time.
