A Good Drama
29 July 2011
Being the first project for its director/writer, I think this film delivers very well. A cohesive storyline, a good acting performance, the pace is somehow slow but yet interesting. It gives you the chance to live with and care for characters. The plot is very simple and the idea is not original, but you will not feel bored. I like this kind of films that contain very little "happenings" and high load of emotions. I think music could have been used in a better way, and also the ending scene was not so satisfying. Keira Knightley was good and convincing, and Sam Worthington's character was somehow confused (maybe this was intended). Guillaume Canet gave an excellent performance. Finally, I liked this film and I highly recommended it for those who like to enjoy good drama.

Old-fashioned premise narrated in such a novel way!
26 January 2010
This summarizes it all! What fascinates about this film is not the story, nor the drama, nor the characters. All who likes the movie would hate it as hell if it's simply narrated in a conventional way. It has nothing new on dramatic level. A very ordinary story that tries to be scary. The key point here is this ingenious unique way of storytelling which I didn't experience before (Yeah I didn't watch The Blair Witch Project yet!), so this way of gathering "acted" scenes and a "real/fake" footage was really surprising and effectively chilling and disturbing. I will not make a spoiler here because I really want you to watch this if you didn't yet. Final word: Don't think a lot about the legality of "based on true events" claiming, and don't think of it like: "The filmmakers have deceived us!". Be smart and just Enjoy the film.

Ambitious film, with a fine premise, but something went wrong
22 December 2009
Warning: Spoilers
It could be better than that.

It is really sad to see all these great conditions combine together, yet the resultant is not that great. Adam Sandler proves he is a very talented and sensitive actor whose acting abilities are far beyond what he presents. The story is really great ( I mean the idea), it is really very promising and ambitious. I felt excited in the first 30 min of the movie and I felt it will be a real masterpiece. It was really unique to see how humor can be mixed with this sense of noble sadness, as if you are laughing with pain. This is really fun and completely unconventional. Plus, the director is really good and creative. So why things didn't go on fine? The story of his old girlfriend and all these events of trying to getting themselves back is pretty inconvenient. They are too long and have completely missed the point. It's like it was another film has been pasted there. This plot was in bad need to a "rewrite" to be a complete masterpiece. The good news here is Sandler himself, who seems to be trying to find good deep stories to make. I wish this will appear more in his coming movies.

Hollywood in the Woodian style!
27 November 2009
Woody Allen is from the most well known filmmakers alive in our world today. His admirers are numerous all over the world. Yet I realized that his lovers are mostly more from outside the states rather than from inside. He is kinda underrated in his own country and I don't find a logical reason for that. I am Egyptian and I adore Woody's style in comedy and storytelling. He is from those rare guys whom we will discover them later after they pass on. I didn't watch all his movies yet but I intend to, especially his films of 80's and 90's. The man has a sense of classy, yet hilarious, comedy which you won't find in any other comedian. He can make a good interesting plot based on a cohesive idea and it's notable that he has hundreds of ideas in his mind. I couldn't believe he finishes a whole picture (written and directed by himself) every year!

The feeling that Woody Allen had about being more appreciated overseas than in his own country I strongly sensed it in this film. In the film, an underrated disappointed director, whose girlfriend is kinda stupid, has been led to direct a film while being completely blind. As you may expect, this is very rich theme for many funny ideas and situation comedies that Woody manage to make use of every bit of it. In the same time he inserted a very human line in the plot for the reason of his psychological blindness (his relationship with his son) which I believe it's a real concern for Woody in his real life. The ending came Hollywoodian but with an Allen sense. I don't want to make spoilers because I really do want you to enjoy the film. We may talk afterward about weather the ending does somehow reflect Woody's bitterness towards his environment or may make a mockery from those who appreciate his art!

The Smiling Dead Son
18 November 2009
Warning: Spoilers
This is from the most touching films I have ever seen in my entire Life. Being based on a play by Ibsen, gives it a very solid coherent story, with very emotional drama. After watching the film you may feel somehow perplexed and confused, but I guess that this is intentional. You will discover new meanings about death and life, hope and grief, marriage and love. Whether you like the film or not, this scene of the dead son smiling under the water will stick in your mind and may change something inside you. If this film is Hollywoodian, I think it would take its place among best 100 films of all time. My advice: see this film whenever you find it.

A Fascinating Story about Friendship and Survival
5 October 2009
Excellent! Adam Sandler has proved to be a deep actor, not just a funny guy who can make you laugh and enjoy your evening. Here you will enjoy the evening and may change your concepts about your whole life starting from this evening. This Charlie Fineman is a complete loser, he lost his happy family life in the calamitous 9/11 events and dramatically became another isolated pathetic person. His old college mate Dr. Alan has met him by chance and insisted to help him. That is it. The story mainly focuses on this unique and sensitive relationship between the two men. You will discover new meanings for friendship. You will learn how to challenge your life and survive for a better world whatever your misery was. Don Cheadle is a great underrated actor, and with Sandler they were a perfect duo. I didn't know about the director Mike Binder before this film, but now I am curious to check out his filmography. Sandler performance was great, made me cry and laugh in the same time. This film is not just enjoyable, I think it is a must-see especially for Sandler fans, and those who like touching emotional drama.

Dracula 2000 (2000)
7/10
Underrated. Give it another chance.
5 October 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Give this film another chance, it is very unlucky. The script is original and interesting. The acting is good. The cinematography and sound and visual effects are very attractive. I believe that it all depends on your mood. If you watched this film in a quiet evening after a delicious dinner and with no quarrel with your wife, you will find it highly interesting. Otherwise you may find it ridiculous, and you are the one to blame! The problem with Dracula movies is that all the ideas have nearly been consumed. It could be thought that nothing more can be told other than the other tons of Dracula movies starting from Bela Lugousi's era. This film proves the opposite. It has seen Dracula in somehow different considerable way! At least give this film the credibility of finding a tie-line between Dracula and Judas Iscariot!

Ed Wood (1994)

"If you can't be Spielberg, be Ed Wood!"
13 July 2009
I am not sure when or where I have heard the above statement, but it is extremely right! Edison has said that "Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration". Many people around the world are now admiring Ed Wood and are fond of watching his complete works DESPITE his lack of talent. The most powerful virtues Ed Wood had were Hardworking and the Love of what he did. Tim Burton and Johnny Depp did a great job in this film, being balanced between real tragedy of the life of this unfortunate man who is trying to prove himself, mixed with a good sense of hilarious comedy. Furthermore, it is your chance to enjoy an ingenious characterization presented by Landau in the role of Bela Lagousi! I recommend it for everyone, even those who know nothing about the real Ed Wood, I assure you: You will enjoy it!

Could be better!
21 May 2009
I am a big fan of Johnny Depp, so watching this film was a must for me. I didn't read the book nor watch the earlier movie so I will make no comparisons. You will find many reasons to like this film: The ingenious Freedie Highmore, the outstanding special world that will fascinate you from the first moment, the weird and superb performance of Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka, yet it is not a complete masterpiece. Something big is missing. During watching I was waiting for 'something' to happen which I didn't know what exactly. Furthermore, the ending was far from satisfaction. Also the part of Wonka's childhood was kinda not convenient. This film could be better hundred times but I don't know how if you ask me!

A Delicious Piece of Art!
12 May 2009
This is the most wonderful piece of animation film i have ever seen. A perfect script, which attracts both kids and adults, a flawless animation, an outstanding characterization..everything is just great! This ingenious rat (Remy) can be a symbol of (Pixar) itself! Fine art can come from a very humble origin (which is here an animation film, that is mainly intended to be a children movie), as like as a great cook can be a rat! In my place there is a common misconception that animation films are made basically for children. I see it in my father's eye when he 'caught' me watching a 3D animation film! I think this film is a very good reply for that. Animation films are always under-rated everywhere, so it was a good surprise for me to know that Pixar's new film (Up!) is now in Canne's film festival (2009)! This has given me hope that Cinema masters begin to appreciate this special genre of fine art!

Great Novel. VERY Bad Film.
9 May 2009
I have to admit here that i adored the novel. Despite being full of some offensive facts about Christianity (which have been refuted by church afterward), it remains from the most entertaining books i have ever read. For the film, i got disappointed. The fact here is that a good successful novel is not necessary to be a good successful film. The secret word here is the SCRIPT. In this film i felt that the script writer just did his best to transform the novel words, page by page, to successive cinematic scenes. As a result, a very boring dull film has been created. This was not a novel adaptation, this was rather a novel 'translation' if you know what i mean. Thus the film had very long speeches, unclear characters development (unlike the novel), waxy faces actors. Cinema sense is not felt during the coarse of the film. Tom Hanks was not in mood completely. I didn't feel he is Robert Langdon at all. I give this film THREE only for its fine technical quality (despite everything it has a good cinematography). A better script was badly needed to save this film.

Knowing (2009)

Are you kidding me????
6 May 2009
Warning: Spoilers
First, I don't like the idea of inserting 'God' and vague religious ideas in a thriller. The Davinci code may be an exception , yet it was also not so good film. Second, What does this film (Knowing) want to say? (Knowing) what? It is a kind of (End of Days) movie where Earth had been destroyed in the end! By the way, according to the film we will all die the next October 19th. Is it about believing in God? Wow! Does Nicolage Cage have believed in God in the end just because he saw the aliens saved his child? I really don't understand what this supposed to be! And the numbers!! oh please! Why for God's sake has he picked the numbers of 911 (in the beginning) from ALL the group of numbers? and what about the numbers graved on the door?? Have i supposed to buy it? What about his reaction when he saw the aliens taking his ONLY child to God-know-where (by the way, he missed to shake hand them while leaving!!) In short, i didn't find any entertainment in this film. It has a start of a good idea but it is not complete. Except of the scenes of the plane and the metro station i felt sleepy during all the film, and of course the ending came to make me feel sick.

Super Size Me (2004)
Ronald is the new children's Christ!
20 April 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Oh man! well, let me say i am a Coptic orthodox. It was an odd shock for me to see those children didn't recognize a picture of Jesus Christ (not even one of them. One of them thought it is for George W. Bush!)while instantly approving on a picture of Ronald McDonald's! That is ridiculous! If it is true it will be a major American disaster! I think this important message of this film (beware of fast foods) is a priority for children in the first place. They are the future. Super Size Me is really an important vital message. For me, it makes me see fast foods in a different way. Good work. I hope media (all over the world, not only in America) aware children (especially children) of the perils of this bad 'junk' habit. I also hope media (especially in America this time) aware children about how Jesus looks like! even if they will deliver a labeled picture of Him with each McDonald's Happy Meal!

The Simone Deception : extremely profound
19 April 2009
Warning: Spoilers
No wonder why most Americans dislike this piece of film. It talks merely about Delusion Creation and how it influences millions of people. After watching this movie i expected to see it on the IMDb top 250, but it was not there. Most reviews do concentrate on the plot technological flaws of the film and forget about the main idea. Here there is a talented director who was able to deceive millions of people not with the intention of mere deception but he was somehow obliged to do so to prove himself. Ring any bells? Yes exactly! It's all about American politics! The irony here is when he wanted to reveal his secret nobody wanted to believe him. I do not want to go through this anyway. Al Paccino was superb in his role. The film also talks about 'Art of Human Creation'. Remember the time it takes Viktor to create Simone's first picture was nine months. Also his name is of the first scientist managed to create humans in fiction. In short, this film is more profound than it seems to be. Try to give it another chance and don't stick to the floppy and the virus removal points. When the food is highly delicious it will be impolite of you to comment on the bad color of the table cover!

King Kong (2005)
You may hate it if .....
18 April 2009
You may hate this movie like hell only in the following cases :

1- If you don't like long movies, or get bored quickly, or don't have enough time. I warn you, this movie is needlessly TOO long.

2- If you get sick with movies depend only on CGI and Video Game monsters. The fact here is: great special effects alone are not necessary to create a great movie.

3- If you have watched the classic one and adore it. You may find this movie somehow 'artificial' compared to the old quaint black and white original. (for some reason, i found the old Kong more freaky than the new one!)

4- If you are too narrow-minded not to believe that a profound love story can be born between an ape and a beautiful girl (who is already in love with a handsome guy). Unfortunately this is the main drama in the film!

5- If you don't like Jack Black! This may be a good point! Some believe he is a great actor and some (including me) believe he is not.

So if the above conditions do not apply on you, you can watch the movie and you will find it really entertaining.

Chahine is looking into a mirror alone!
11 April 2009
It is from the rights for any film maker to make a movie talking about himself, his own life, his personal weakness, his very personal struggles. But the only condition for this is to create a film that is: (1) beautiful. (2) can be seen and appreciated by anyone else. The problem here with Chahine is that he didn't consider people watching this piece of film. I admit it is beautiful, somewhat attractive and well directed. The songs are touching. If you are a big fan of chahine you will feel interested to see him in person act, dance, sing, and casually involved with real actors and country people in the film. But the question here is i may not be concerned to know about this very personal struggling of him. I got the feeling that Chahine talks to himself loudly in this film and it may be rude of me to listen to him! I have nothing to do with his problems with his first actor or with his eternal Hamlet dream. He might have inserted the story of the artists strike and so on for this very same reason. He wanted us to feel it is a general film for anyone not only for him.

According to me, a good autobiography film means that the director is looking into his own mirror but with the audience appearing with him. Here i felt that Chahine is alone in the mirror. My advice for you, if you like Chahine watch the film, but don't expect a masterpiece.

Politics is not the name of the game!
15 December 2007
All the reviews talk about this film from only a political point of view. Well i think this is not accurate. All these talking about the corrupted policeman "Hatem" who is a sign for the dictatorial political system and the combat between policemen and judgment and this girl "Noor" who is a model for the raped Egypt, well i think all these are not the point, or they are not the main point. I see the film from more human point of view. This man "Hatem" is a pathetic loser who lives a miserable lonely life, despite all the power he owns he has an extreme feeling of deprivation. He is a victim. "Noor" is a sign of what he needs to own. A beautiful young girl living in front of him, he knows her since she was a child and he never stops dreaming of her. What is the result? She is hating him! "Hatem" is not bad person. His inner emotions could be turned to something positive if he found love in return. The film talks mainly, in my opinion, about the chaos in feelings. Remember the relationship between "Sheriff" and his mother, and between "Sheriff" and "Selvia". They resemble an extreme undefined chaos. May be the message of the creators of the film is this: Chaos in feelings leads to chaos in the world. Finally i am not able to consider the film to be one of Chahine's films. Any one who likes Chahine will understand this point. This film has no Chahine's essence. It's well made and well directed but simply it's not Chahine's. you may feel a glimpse of Chaine's in the romantic love story between Sheriff and Noor, the relationship between Noor and her mother which will remind you of Lebleba and Hanan Tork in "The Other", you will also remember the old Chahine in the sexual mania of "Hatem" which also will remind you of the most famous "Qenaui" in "Bab el Hadeed". But as a total, you will not satisfy with the film if you put in mind that you are watching a Youssef Chahine's film.

Spider-Man 3 (2007)
disappointed
9 August 2007
I didn't like it. SM2 was deeper and more amusing. Here you feel that the creators wanna put so much eggs in the bag, the result is "CRUSHHHH!!".. A random sequence and an untied storyline. Yeah the effects were perfect i admit, but were not placed in their right places. When i saw the trailer and the poster i expected a philiosphical theme about good and evil, revenge and tolerance. The film has talked about these stuffs but in such a shallow way. What i like most in SM movies is the philosiphical backgrounds, they re not just a-hero-and-a-monster movies (not batman if u know what i mean), that's why i was a little bit disappointed.

We are living in the best worlds ever!
3 August 2007
One of the masterpieces no doubt. An original screenplay arouses us to think, to meditate, and that's how good films have to do. In my opinion, the main idea that we can conclude from this film is that we are really living in the best worlds ever, and any thought or trial to change something in our past life will likely result to a worse condition. Another conclusion may be that sometimes we'd rather be away from our beloved ones to keep for them a better life. The storyline is really perfect and well made in spite of its difficulty. The casting is perfect. Being based on the chaos theory making the film more attractive! This film is from the kind you won't easily forget.

The Other Side of Jesus Christ
25 February 2006
Warning: Spoilers
When i first heard about "The Last Temptation of Christ" i decided that i must see it for many reasons: First it talks about Jesus Christ who is so controversial among so many religious doctrines. Second, it talks about Jesus Christ who is the most revered by all Christians (which i'm among them). Third, it talks about Jesus Christ with a different point of view (more humane, if u like the expression). The dual nature of Jesus has been distracting people all over ages, but there is a fact that no one can deny, is that as Jesus is 100% divine, he is 100% humane as well. He is not an angel if you know what i mean. Why we suppose that he accepted to accomplish his difficult duty with a total consent and complete satisfactory? without never being hesitated or reconsidering? The gospels themselves declare that Jesus has prayed to God to "take the cup away from Him". The film has seen Jesus from this point of view, and we can accept or refuse it, but we cannot deny that it is deserved to be considered, even from the religious ones. This doesn't mean that i accept the film completely. The scenes of the young angel in the last half hour in the film (which are the scenes of the last temptation) makes me yelling, what the hell is that?! till i understand that this was the last Satan temptation that Jesus has refused it in the end and demanded to return to the moment of execution. May be these scenes which caused the audience to have a bad impression towards the film till they understand what is all about, may be because they are too long and with no hint about their truth. Beside, of course, the odd doubted relationship that the film declared between Jesus and Mary Magdaline which caused a large vexation among the religious ones, despite the disclaimer in the beginning. Finally i would like to say, that i'm a religious Christian, who accepted the concept of the film, refused some scenes, but this what good films must make; controversy and more controversy.

106 min: mere dream!
30 April 2005
It's a dream! 106 min of discovering all the beautiful areas in a life full of pain, boredom and bad intentions. Peter Pan is a symbol here of a "trial" to escape from the wild merciless life to dreamy vivid land. well for me, i liked this film, and i leaved the cinema hall with the feeling that i become more positive, loving my life more, and with the hope to search for this Neverland inside my boring steady life. Johny Deep was perfect, it's his movie no doubt, but for Kate Winslet i didn't strongly feel her "aura" in the film. And of course i won't forget Freddie Highmore who was really superb in spite of his very young age. Finally, my advise to all who suffer a miserable non changeable life, go and see that film!

Monsieur Ibrahim and the "missing wisdom"
15 September 2004
It's a smooth tender story of a boy who tries to find the real meaning of life which he hadn't experienced yet. A Jewish boy, who didn't know any thing about his religion, with a miserable family life, all his aim from the beginning just to enjoy his a life as much as possible. He has been led to know Ibrahim and to recognize his special method in living, his concepts, his past and aims... I guess that Quran in this film is not meant to be "the Muslims holy book", but to be "the missing wisdom" that's must be found in one's life to live his time in a comfortable correct way, and that you must have a concept for your life style. As we see, the boy begins to sip this culture and he found the lost peace and love that he was badly needing them. After the death of Ibrahim, he vividly took his place in the store adopting his way of thinking and his life style. Omar Sharif (which has an Egyptian origin) was superb, also Pierre Boulanger was marvelous especially his way in expressing his inner feelings. The directing technique helps the feeling of 'involving' in the film atmosphere. One of the best movies at all.

an epic of music, dance, love and ideas!
25 August 2004
"Do you know what's the difference between you and Ginger? It's simply the same difference between all the wonderful romantic dreamy 40's Hollywood old movies and the harsh rough violent action movies of today." A close meanings to these words are said by Yehia during his quarrel with his American son Alexander when they were talking about America. These words do summarize the complicated relationship that ties Chahine with America, beginning from being the holy vivid dream to him as a film-maker, ending to his feeling of losing his way in its streets as shown at the end of the film. A very romantic beautiful touching film, full of emotional songs, great music pieces and outstanding dancing shows as well! One of Chahine's best at all with a deeper view towards Chahine's private life and his political and ideological thoughts, concerning the idea that America is not being a dream any more, and it isn't still the gate of freedom and beauty as it used to be. Finally, If you have watched the previous three chapters of Chahine's autobiography and adore them as i did, Don't miss this film!

I Love Cinema (2004)
a film about freedom
12 August 2004
(Baheb el Cima) or (I Love Cinema) is considered the first Egyptian film, and the first arabic film as well, that discusses the concept of Freedom by all this depth and courage. It concerns freedom by all its axes and dimensions: freedom of expressing your own views even to your own self before anyone else, freedom of thoughts towards life, community, and even towards dealing with God. The film talks about a child Naeem (Youssef Osman) who loves Cinema (which is a sign here for freedom) but he suffers from the complicated fanatic mentality of his father Adly (Mahmoud Hemeida) who sees that Cinema is a great sin!Adly here resembles all the conquering force that fetters the soul of freedom. He puts some odd restrictions towards everything in his life concerning his sexual relationship with his wife Ne'mat (Laila Eloui) as he sees that sex is only a tool to bring babies and it can't be used for more than that! Adly also has no enough freedom to confess, even to himself, that he performs well in his life towards God only because he is afraid of God's punishment after death. All these events run, with a very smart twist, in the same historical time where whole Egypt was also suffering from a government political conquest (1966/1967). Finally, it's a great bold worth-seeing film that penetrates a very dark room in the Egyptian community, and in the human soul as well - by the very great director Osama Fawzy.
