The Sky's on Fire (1999)
Someone tell me this is some twisted nightmare!
I'm one of those people who really enjoy schlocky B-movies (I thought Category 6 was a good film) but this is an insult.
For a start, the movie grinds to a halt in the middle and features 10 minutes of nonstop riot footage.
An infinite number of interesting subplots and ideas are thrown out, and it really feels like the production ran out of money at the end! Watch it, as soon as the jet takes off, the money runs out.
The plot is absurd, and not good-absurd either. It's BAD-absurd!! The characters make bad decisions just to build some suspense, for example: if your house is overrun by bugs, lock yourself in the closet and wait in there for the bugs to come in and bite you. The same shot of the sun is repeated at least 15 times, and "deadly atmospheric firestorms" are little more than (over)actors writhing in bright light.
Turbulence 2: Fear of Flying (1999)
Bad plot + bad ending + mediocre acting = brainless fun
Turbulence 2: Fear Of Flying was on cable last night and I loved it. A passenger on a flight of people with fears of flying reveals himself as a terrorist and hijacks the plane, two of the passenger's "fears" magically disappear and they become hostages-come-action-heroes. By the way, Turbulence 2 is a sequel in name only to the 1997 clunker Turbulence.
Craig Sheffer (from TV's teen drama One Tree Hill) and Jennifer Beals (remember her from Flashdance?) soon scheme against the "terrorists" (if you can call them that, they're that inept) and a few plot convolutions later, Sheffer has to land the plane himself.
SPOILERS (but if you've seen any of these "plane" movies before, it isn't really a big issue...) After they land the plane with some help via radio, the movie amounts to a really weak ending, and the evil terrorist's death isn't satisfying at all. (stabbing himself with his own weapon... what the hell is that??) I think part of this movie's appeal is the great team Sheffer and Beals make. If this movie's on TV late one night, then I suggest you check it out, at least...
Bruce Almighty (2003)
Lame by Jim Carrey's standards
POSSIBLE SPOILERS?
A pretty disappointing follow-up to Liar Liar (1997) by the Jim Carrey/Tom Shadyac team. Lame jokes and a plot that doesn't give enough legroom for Carrey's comic genius. Liar Liar was such a surprisingly funny movie, and this isn't.
God (Morgan Freeman) gives his job to Bruce (Carrey) so God can take some time off. Bruce soon finds its quite a job, and after being hit by a truck he becomes a changed man.
Also stars a very out-of-place Jennifer Aniston. Bruce Almighty is worth seeing out of curiosity if you're a fan of Jim Carrey. 4 out 5 stars.
Charlie's Angels (2000)
Excellent popcorn flick
When I first heard about the "Charlie's Angels" movie, I was prepared for the worst. How wrong I was. This movie is excellent. A very charismatic cast who look like they're having a lot of fun: Drew, Cameron and Lucy, and Bill Murray as Boseley, and a hilarious role for Tom Green, who plays Dylan's boyfriend Chad.
The plot has something to do with an old friend of Charlie's trying to find him and kill him, using some voice-recognition software or something. But that's not important.
If you haven't seen this movie, go rent it now! It's great fun, great laughs and great action! The girls really kick ass!
I give Charlie's Angels 6 out of 5! It's really that good!
