unwatchable
16 October 2023
I really really really wanted to like this series. I am a big Edgar Allen Poe fan and so of course the title immediately grabbed me. Unfortunately I very quickly found out that the show has nothing to do with the Edgar Allen Poe masterpiece after which it is named. The creators are obviously attempting to piggyback on the name of Edgar Allen Poe who is possibly the most brilliant American horror writer of all time. Nice bait and switch!

I was quickly turned off by the obvious pandering to political correctness in both the casting and in the interaction between the brother and sister. Of course, every girl character these days has to be the "tough" one with her male counterpart being weak and scatterbrained and dependent on her.

I couldn't finish the first episode. Yet another crap series released by Netflix. NEXT...

Entranced
15 September 2023
I was thoroughly entranced by this movie. The movie had me captivated from the opening scene all the way through the heartbreaking, beautiful, tragic, hopeful conclusion.

The acting is superb. Every single actor from the stellar main players to the small parts seemed to completely immerse themselves in their roles and characters. The tragic (and then the sort of twist after the tragic ending) took me somewhat by surprise. I can't really imagine anyone who appreciates drama and superb acting and dialogue would not appreciate this film. I have been impressed with Vanessa Kirby since her stunning performance in the Crown and she does not let me down even with her American accent in this movie - which she pulls off perfectly.

unsatisfying
14 November 2022
I've just finished this show and really am shocked at the horribly unsatisfying ending. While the premise is good and the acting is good, the show builds up to a monumental letdown. The viewer is falsely led to have the sends that justice will eventually be done. I've really said all I can say or want to say about this show and yet this thing is telling me that I have to have at least characters and won't let me submit my review until I've met that minimum. Seriously? Is this a new policy? I've been using this site for a good twenty years and there's never previously been this requirement. Hopefully this last sentence will do it.

Bad. Really bad.
26 June 2022
I'm being very honest when I say that this movie is one of the worst horror movies I've seen in my life. It's one of those movies that's so bad it's unintentionally funny in parts. It has little or no discernible plot and the acting is atrocious.

The Cleaner

The Cleaner is a poignant story with some funny parts and a stellar supporting cast. It's nice to see Lynda Carter and Shelley Long still shining. This movie won't appeal to more immature audiences who expect to see shoot 'em up action in every single scene. It's about relationships.

Emmy worthy

Engrossing from start to finish. Biel is incredible and deserves an Emmy nomination. The supporting cast is excellent. The costumes and the sets have a very authentic feel to them which helps the viewer immerse themselves into the story.

People, it's a dark comedy. It's supposed to be silly. The acting is superb and the story holds your attention. The characters are interesting. Highly recommended.

twisty and good

This movie will keep you glued to the screen from start to finish, at first trying to figure out what the hell is going on and then after that with all of its twists and turns... and a hot homoerotic scene to boot..

Sorry, but this movie is just bad. I've gotten barely 40 minutes into it before it has become utterly unwatchable. It seems to be tryng to infuse 2021-style political correctness into a movie set in the early 1950's. There is absolutely nothing about that which is believable.

Wokeness has destroyed a potentially good movie.

Best Movie of 2021
10 January 2022
The accolades are well-deserved. This movie is haunting, simple, and brilliantly acted. I'm usually fairly good and figuring out the ending of a movie half way into it, but I did not see this one coming at all.

Good acting
27 December 2021
I did not have high hopes. However, the acting is actually very good and the cinematography is gorgeous. Unlike most indie-type horror film nowadays, it did not "jump the shark" as badly as it might have. Overall, an enjoyable horror flick with an interesting plot.

The acting is pretty good overall and the plot twist is kind of interesting. Unfortunately, the movie follows the same old tired current day politically correct formula: Men are bad and evil, women are good and strong, Southerners are rural rednecks. Yawn. Nothing new to see here. Yawn again.

snoozer

Great cast but the pace literally put me to sleep. I usually love movies with gloomy, brooding atmospheres, but the atmosphere combined with the slow pace of the story meant that I had to keep rewinding to see what I missed while sleeping.

good directing and acting
1 November 2021
It's somewhat refreshing to see a movie about the Manson murders that focuses more on the personalities of the victims and on the brooding atmosphere than on the blood and gore.

There are some factual inaccuracies, such as the manner in which some of the victims were killed, but overall it's an intriguing exploration of a very dark and infamous crime.

Eve Arden had a unique combination of class and comedy, and this witty and fun movie is a perfect showcase of her talent. The supporting cast are excellent as well.

Only Murders in the Building
27 September 2021
Martin Short and Steve Martin are excellent, as they are in just about everything they do. The storyline has great potential and the supporting cast are fantastic.

My only poblem is that Selena Gomez's character is exceedingly annoying. She is somber and judgmental. She also seems to have a problem with white men, which to me makes her a racist. Hopefully her chracter will develop into a nicer person, making the show more watchable.

not funny
16 August 2021
I kept seeing the restaurant scene (With Mae, her girliend, and Mae's Mom & Dad) auto-playing on Netflix. It's a really funny scene, so I finally gave in and starting watching. So far, 6 episodes into the series, it turns out that that scene is the ONLY funny scene. Still I trudge on as I want to know how it turns out.

funniest movie of 2021

This film is a riot from the opening scene until the final one. Honestly, if anyone does not think this film is hilarious, they probably need to have a stick removed from a certain orifice.

The main character is annoying.
23 July 2021
I've just finished both seasons.

Three characters kept me watching: The Mom, Ryan's boss at work (she's a hoot!), and the hot fireman next door. All 3 were witty and fun, and, in the case of the fireman, also pretty to look at.

What kills the show in the end is the attitude of the main character, Ryan. In season 1 he is mostly tolerable, but in season 2 it goes downhill. He comes across as a spolied, entitled, and unreasonable brat. He has a "damned if you do and damned if you don't" attitude toward others vis-a-vis his disability. Everyone is expected to say the perfect thing when it comes to his disability and always act the perfect way around his disabled friends.

I also did not appreciate the ageism in the writing which was displayed when Ryan meets Tanner's boyfriend.

not funny at all

This movie is not funny at all. Furthermore, the lead character is perhaps the most annoying character I have ever seen in a comedy. I am embarrassed for Netflix for releasing this film.

spiritual and thought provoking

The movie gives the viewer a sense of spirituality and comfort. It is well acted overall.

It was refreshing to see that the movie recognized that Mary Magdalene was indeed not a prostitute - not that I have anything against sex workers.

too slow paced
30 June 2021
The movie drags on, painfully slow at times. You keep waiting for something big, but it just snoozes along. There are too many plot holes as well, making it too diffcult to suspend your disbelief. And finally, and perhaps most annoyingly, they try to hard to make the main character so cool and such a "strong female lead", that she just comes across as drugged, almost lobotomized and lifeless at times, and well, just annoying.

started out well
14 June 2021
The movie started well with some weird and funny dialogue. The premise is excellent, but it gets wildly over the top dark. Jessee Eisenberg is an exellent actor. He carried the film and kept me from stopping the movie when it got too dumb.

not bad
17 May 2021
It's an entertaining movie overall. It moves slowly, and a lot of people with short attention spans won't like that. A lot of the comedy is subtle and/or sarcastic, which I enjoy. Fun fact: There's a blooper in the last scene when the wife is coming into the house through the front door. When she enters there is a cross on the wall by the door. When the camera flashes back to her, the cross is gone.

Warning: Spoilers
I love period pieces, and this one checks every box when it comes to the sets, the atmosphere, the wardrobe, the hairstyles, and the props. It's a true film noir.

Unfortunately, the main questions that most viewers would want answered are never answered. Did he kill his wife? Did he survive at the end? Did he die? The ending is just too frustrating. If there was a satisfying ending, it would be a 9 or 10.
