Electra (2023)
Great visual, mediocre plot
It's a great visual spectacle. Great editing, keeps your attention focused. Unfortunately, the content is rather uninteresting. The subject matter alone will probably only appeal to a small group. The author seems to be trying to deal with her own experience, but even from that perspective it doesn't bring anything more than a description of her own emotions, lacking a deeper conclusion. It reminds me a bit of Svankmajer's works - visually original, disturbing but uninteresting in content. If the author develops a more interesting script in the future, there is potential for a really interesting film.
Dune: Part Two (2024)
Professional workmanship with a lack of invention
From Dune: Part Two I had high expectations. I've heard nothing but superlatives. I didn't come away disappointed, but I wasn't thrilled either. Denis Villeneuve undoubtedly understands his craft, but at the same time, the film doesn't bring anything explicitly new creatively. You have to take into account that the literary source material is just great, and it's largely what makes the film good. Creatively and visually, the film doesn't bring anything truly new to the table. It doesn't create a new visual image like Star Wars or the original take on Dune. If Villeneuve, with his craft, had the artistic approach of Jodorowsky then only a memorable work would have been created. Personally, I also have reservations about the leads. Timothée Chalamet is excellent as the young Paul Atreides but for me he lacks the charisma of the leader Muad'Dib, Zendaya traditionally performs rather lacklustrely. Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha, on the other hand, impressed me.
