Road House (2024)

Ignore the haters
30 March 2024
I saw the original at the cinema and I can remember enjoying it, but make no mistake it was a simple film, and essentially a western about a saloon owner in trouble with local outlaws. Fast forward to the remake and my wife said I want to watch this, but cant really remember much about the old one. I said it's a western etc. So, when the new version gives its own nod to this idea it did make me smile. But what is it like? On a Friday night with a couple of drinks we really enjoyed it, even Connor McGregor hamming it up. Like the original film it's good fun, all you need do is disengage your brain and go with it. The central story is essentially the same but the film is different because of its setting annd back story etc. Jake plays a really good part, and works well in the role. The rest of the cast perform as you would expect, though Arturo Castro's character is arguably more hammy than McGregors, which is surprising considering how talented an actor he is.

Everyone else stays in their lane and the film provides exactly what you want on a Friday evening. Solid, unchallenging entertainment.

Thoroughly enjoyed it and the ending was on point
29 December 2023
It's a film that splits the room, but I enjoyed it and the characters. The only sticking point I had was the animal behaviour - there was no point of reference for this so I'm not sure what the film was trying to convey.

The rest of the film was dialogue driven, little in the way of action but perfectly paced using stereotypical positions to show how a cyberattack scenario like this could play out and how different people might behave. Then the ending comes, and I thought it was, as mentioned in my headline, totally on point. It's definitely worth watching, especially if you are over 40 with healthy disdain for herd behaviour.

An adult, authentic, and immersive ghost story
28 October 2023
Not much happens - let's put that out there, and quickly correct it; enough happens, it's just a matter of perspective.

The problem these days is that people are looking for thrills and scares from the likes of that waste of skin, Zak Bagans, and every shyster that went before him, or came after him, and that whole pantomime of make believe.

This show is the polar opposite, it digs into the history, the people, the neighbours, and do you know what, it's gripping because of its realism. Nobody gets possessed, nobody gets hit by flying objects, bottom line is that nobody is trying to fake it.

This show gave me back some faith that ghost hunting shows are still being made that can tell a story without the need to rig up flying chairs and stigmata.

If you like an adult approach to your spook stories then you will love this.

Very, very funny
31 July 2023
It's a straight 10, I could be picky and give it a 9, but then I would have to think of the reasons why, and I can't as they just aren't worth mentioning.

The last time I/we laughed consistently like this was watching Catastrophe. All the characters are brilliantly brought I life by the cast and the comic timing is sublime.

A special mention must go to Helen Thomson for nailing the part of Lynelle. Full cringe alert!

I never give spoilers or mention plot apart from Colin not having much to do with accounts until it comes to debt collecting.

Just watch it, it's brilliantly funny, cringey, awkward and heartwarming. Roll on season 2 🙏🏻

Modern Warfare
3 June 2023
I'm not giving spoilers, I'm not even going to tell you about the plot. I will tel you that it left me thinking that Guy Ritchie is going to take over from Ridley Scott if he continues like this.

I knew this would be a good film from the moment we get a sky down view of the opening scenes. A thoughtful nod to the way drones are used in war and the way we are fed drone video in military campaigns. Then abruptly we are on the ground. A couple of typical Guy Ritchie flourishes at the start (words on screen showing soldier nicknames), because he wants you to buy in to the characters and then off we go; It's like Gladiator meets Black Hawk Down on foot, claustrophobic tension and action all rolled into a 2 hour film. You invest in Gyllenhaal and Salim because you believe in the plot. You believe in the plot because everything seems plausible.

In return you get a war film that keeps you on the edge of your seat desperately hoping it will end well. Pound for pound a great, emotionally charged war film about the perils of modern warfare and of loyalty and debt.

Shantaram (2022)

Fantastic cast and a brilliant show.
24 January 2023
It took me a few months to get around to watching Shantaram, but I'm so glad that I did. Centred on a Bombay slum and an escaped Aussie convict, as a season it just keeps on giving. The cast are really outstanding, the story ebbs and flows and finishes with a great finale. By the time we reach the end we know all the characters as they have been fully allowed to develop and have a place in the story that does not feel like they have been added to fill a space of plot line. Early on, the plot feels like a white saviour vehicle, but then a reality is brought into the situation and you soon look passed this and into the depth of the situation. It needs to have a season 2 and hopefully, someone can sort it out.

I liked it but..

Warning: Spoilers
1. It's two episodes too long with a lot of padding and random situations 2. All the characters are portrayed really well and the cast did a fine job except for Jessica Ann Collins. I don't really know who she is as an actor, (she had a bit part in Zero Dark Thirty, which I would have to watch again as I can't remember who she played) but in this she is awful, she has one facial expression and that is blank goldfish. Either that's all her face can do or she has had too much botox and can't push an expression out? But that's just one element, though once you see it you can't unsee it. The other thing is she can't act, she is completely unbelievable and totally wooden. She has the ability to suck the life out of any scene.

3. Some curious body shots: In the last episode, there is a scene with Jessica Ann Collins and she has swimwear and a kind of beach sari on. We are treated to a shot of her ass as she is leaning on a balcony. For the life of me I don't see a purpose to the shot other than to show us her butt to make her seem more interesting?

I know it's her career, and I wish her well, but if there is anything with her in from this point forward then I can't see me watching it.

Easy 9
3 September 2022
I'm not going to bore you with bs and to try and make out I'm some undiscovered film critic. The reason I cut a star is because the pace could have been raised little. Apart from that this is a great slice of SciFi that has huge character attribute driven story. The SciFi element is sprinkled through the plot and holds everything together. What this isn't is some huge SciFi CGI fest. I can't remember ever seeing anything quite like it before. I feel a bit guilty about knocking the star off, but while I appreciate what they are trying to achieve and succeed at is build characters we invest in I still think it could have been a touch tighter. Can't wait for the second season.

A damn fine addition to the franchise.

There's a bunch of crap written on here about the female lead and how she would never overcome a Predator. They obviously didn't watch the film, because there are a host of reasons why she could. BS aside, it's a great film and reminded me of 2008's Outlander. Bloody good fun and well worth a watch.

Kids loved it
4 April 2022
The kids loved it so much they gave it a 10. I knocked it down a couple of pegs because it isn't a Toy Story level of fun. But that said, there's plenty of jokes and references for the adults to laugh at while the kids enjoy the usual tropes of bonding friendship etc. There's plenty of cheese on offer, and the older parts of the audience will see this, but young eyes aren't jaded and that's the lens you need to use. Great animation, slapstick, cheese and all round good fun.

My favourite Marvel series opener!
30 March 2022
Watched the trailer and thought it might be a gas, and it was! Great fun, and it keeps on giving. The only disappointment was when Steven can here a voice in his flat and my 10 year old daughter said, I hope that's the fish talking". Marvel you missed an opportunity 8-) Damn good show, watch it!

Quirky, sometimes uncomfortable, but sublime.
29 March 2022
Let's start with the animation; imagine if you took the animation of the Aha song Take on me, passed it to artist Gerald Scarfe to colour, then let Raymond Briggs round the contours of the drawings out before passing it to the animation team behind Akira for camera angles before they pass it back to Briggs, then letting it marinate in the cruelty of early 70s: the animation is spell binding and draws you in, and that's the really clever part of the hook, because when the film moves on to the cruelty of children and how vengeful they can be, you can't look away.

The story is a life snapshot of. Beryl, a child of the sixties recounting her family life events, and how she arrived at nearly 60 realising that her opportunity in art may have slipped by.

That's all I'm going to give you! Just bloody watch it!

Double Tap required
24 May 2021
The trailer is awesome, punchy, sharp, edited to perfection alongside the song, and promises soooooo much fun, and the film is just below par. A nothing film that in a way reminded me of Suicide Squad, ie a pointless walk by a gang of misfits, through a couple of hours of my life. Retrospectively, it's surprising how a film can be this long without any real character development. If film making was based on paint by numbers then this would be it. Watch the trailer and enjoy that.

A slow burner and a really great film
5 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I'm not going to say anything apart from well done to Netflix and the team for producing a great, yet subtle and understated film. Spoiler alert, the moment with Paterson on the battlefield is a fantastic nod to Monty Python and the Holy Grail - if it wasn't deliberate then my mother must surely be a hamster.

Embarrassing
6 August 2019
Poor script. Poor acting. Poor story. Poorly thought out and executed. Please don't waste any of your life on this Z rate guff that should be on after midnight on the SyFy channel.
