Land of the Dead (2005)
What a let down
Boy was I excited to see this movie. I love the first two Romero Living Dead flicks and think Dawn of the Dead is one of the best horror movies ever.
Why can't Romero just stick with what works? Day of the Dead was the worst in the trilogy and he took it to a new extreme here. Who cares about the human conflict? I want to see people killing zombies and trying to survive in a wasteland. Didn't we see this LOTD script already in 28 Days Later? That was a waste of time too...
And talk about holes in the plot. How exactly is it, that there's been enough time for this huge group of survivors to create a city and mini-civilization, but they're still out pillaging neighboring areas for food and supplies? You mean to tell me it's months, maybe years after the dead have risen, but they've never been to a suburb right outside of their "safe" city? I mean, the city in the beginning had to be pretty close... the zombies walked to the "new civilization" within a couple days time.
Holes like these along with lame characters just ruined this movie. Next time, Romero should turn the script and the directing over to the kid who directed the 2004 Dawn of the Dead. THAT was a real zombie horror flick.
Videodrome (1983)
So Close
This is certainly an enjoyable movie and deserves a viewing. Unfortunately, I think it fell a little short of what could have been an amazing experience.
Definitely ahead of its time, quite well acted and conceived, Videodrome pushes the boundaries of reality. If you're a big sci-fi fan, you may enjoy when the movie breaks those bounds. Instead, I would liked to have seen it remain more on the potentially realistic side.
Without spoiling the flick, suffice it to say that Cronenberg could have stuck with delusions and mind control more to the effect of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind or Vanilla Sky. Or take the path of total creepiness bordering on potentially realistic a la The Ring.
Either approach would have left me loving this movie, instead of leaving it on the fence of being time well spent vesus a masterpiece.
See it and decide for yourself.
Mr. Show with Bob and David (1995)
Sheer Brilliance
It saddens me to say that I think I'll never see another program as great as Mr Show in my lifetime. Dear *god* (read Bob & David), I hope so, but I just think it's unlikely.
From the most clever of transitions, to blatantly sarcastic commentary on American culture, Mr Show is to the U.S. as Monty Python was to the U.K.
Some people don't get it at first. For some, it requires a little too much thought. To those I say, keep watching. And then watch it again. Eventually, you'll catch such things as the nuances of the "Pre-taped Call-in Show" and the blatant societal stab of the "Hail Satan" network.
Yeah, it's got its down skits, but what show doesn't? Fact of the matter is, the genius of the good ones outshine anything else around.
Da Ali G Show (2000)
Keeps you laughing long after you finish watching
I'll echo everything the other reviewer said and note that the two characters Cohen plays that aren't Ali G (Borat and Bruno), are even funier than Ali G himself.
Season 1 is a classic, though it tapers off in quality with the last couple of episodes. As such, it still has at least 1 riotous part in every episode. And by riotous, I mean the kind of humor that you will continue to laugh out loud about for months following.
The new season is even better. I never thought he could surpass what he did before, but he has. There were two particular segments, one with Borat in a cowboy bar, another with Bruno at Spring Break, that had me laughing for 5 minutes straight AFTER the segment was over.
From Dream On to Mr Show to Ali G, HBO knows comedy. This is, BY FAR, the best comedy show on TV. Chappelle is the only other program that comes close.
The Big Lebowski (1998)
The Definition of Clever Sarcasm
I'm going to start off by mentioning this movies falls at #2 on my list of best movies of all time. I'll also mention that I live by dry sarcasm and underlying suggestion.
Interestingly enough, I hated this movie the first time I saw it. Missing the first 10 minutes certainly didn't help, as I had a hard time following. However, nothing really stood out that I enjoyed.
As I watched the movie ~25 more times over the next 10 years, I saw everything that I had missed in that first viewing. And it became entirely clear to me the pure genius and wit that goes into EVERY scene and EVERY line of dialog.
This movie has the best character definition I've ever seen. Even though you can't necessarily identify with the characters, you feel as if you've known them for years within the first couple minutes of meeting them. Sure, they are stereotypical, but they are also brilliantly acted and portrayed, making them so believable.
Goodman gives the performance of a lifetime. Walter is so over-the-top ridiculous, and yet so surprisingly content as such, one can't help but to laugh at how seriously he takes himself.
And then there's Jesus. Everyone else does a top-notch job, but he steals the show. Two scenes, both equally outrageous. Costumed, acted and written to perfection.
If you find yourself disliking this movie, watch it again (unless you're easily offended by the *F* word). Let every line of dialog sink in, along with the way it's delivered. When you find yourself laughing hard at your favorite parts, rewind them and listen to the reactions of characters that you may have missed because you were laughing so hard. They are equally as rewarding.
There is so much to digest in the Big Lebowski, it deserves to be viewed a couple times a year. You will undoubtedly see/hear something you probably missed the previous time.
Menace II Society (1993)
Shockingly Perfect
This movie is so good, I remember specifically the first time I saw it.
I was 17 years old, hanging out with friends, doing the things 17 year olds and the characters in the movie do, in a friend's backyard. On our way out to a movie theater, I ran up to the entertainment room to grab my jacket. As I entered, I heard the first line of "Menace" from a television which had been left on. In the 30 seconds it took me to put on my jacket, I was drawn into the flick.
As the first scene came to a close, my buddies came looking for me. It didn't take long for them to realize that we wouldn't be going anywhere.
At such an age this movie shocked and excited me. It left me in awe and on the edge of tears.
In my early twenties (and after I'd seen it several times), the movie made me laugh out loud. The clever dialog, even in tenuous situations, is genius. Cheeseburgers, anyone?
Now in my late twenties, I consider this a classic. Take your other gang movies and throw them out the window. Boyz n the Hood is the only one that comes close and that takes itself way too seriously. Everything else is just an imitation of this perfectly woven tale.
As long as you can tolerate the violence and not-so-clean language, check this one out. It's simply brilliant.
