Mortal Kombat (2021)
So predictable it's boring
I was really hoping this would be a fun, action flick that required little mental effort to enjoy. But.
Dear god. The script is so flat, the dialogue so predictable that it just doesn't grab your attention. There are some funny lines, but omg they're few and far between. The plot for this can be written on a napkin in a diner. And it'd only need one side.
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (2010)
Excellent adventure flick - don't be put off because Disney made it
This is a really good movie, but its not what you'd expect from a Disney movie. There's a lot of excellent action/fight sequences, parkour and some sensational sexual tension between the two main characters. The plot isn't totally obvious either.
This is a movie I would be happy to pay to see in the cinema, which should tell you how much I liked it. Its basically a cross between Indiana Jones and Tales of the Arabian Knights, and thats not a bad thing.
Jake Gyllenhaal and Gemma Arterton are fantastic, witty, tense and believable.
The star of the movie is Alfred Molina, who, as he often does, steals the show. He is very, very funny, you'll love his quips about his ostriches (I wont spoil it for you).
Go see this, you won't be disappointed.
Valentine's Day (2010)
Entertaining and not overly Schmaltzy
I took my wife to a preview screening of this movie as I thought it was going to be a chick flick that she'd enjoy and that I might be able to tolerate.
Much to my surprise, this is actually a good movie. Guys, you won't be bored or cringing all the way through this movie in fact you'll probably enjoy it. The cast, as you have probably seen, is fantastic and all the big stars give compelling performances, apart from Jessica Alba who looks bored and unenthused in the movie, thankfully she only has a small part.
The script is quite clever and manages to keep you guessing as to who will end up with who all the way to the end, its well done too.
The best part of this movie is the humor, this is one funny movie. I hope all you guys will take your ladies to see this, you'll both enjoy it.
From Paris with Love (2010)
Great Action movie, well worth seeing
If you are a fan of John Travolta, you'll love this movie.
He plays the funny, swaggering hero perfectly. You've seen him play this character before, of course, but he's so damn good at it! The jokes come thick and fast from Travolta who must have worked very hard for this part, he's lost a lot of weight and has worked out hard - this is one buffed out dude!
Jonathan Rhys Meyers performance is a bit disappointing. Somehow he wasn't all that convincing here. His role as Henry VIII was much more impressive. Perhaps he was a bit overawed by Travolta.
Very entertaining movie, probably the best I've seen this year (Edge of Darkness runs a close second). The twist at the end is very clever, I don't think you will see it coming.
Enjoy.
Up in the Air (2009)
Funny, realistic movie that was ultimately unsatisfying
I won't give you a plot run down here - there are plenty of posts giving you that.
As a person who has lived the traveling life depicted in the movie, its well written. All of the main actors do an admirable job of conveying the script. This movie will keep you laughing all the way through the movie too.
But, for some reason that I can't put my finger on, its ultimately a disappointing film.
I wish the script had explored the characters a little further and really resolved some of the issues at the end.
If you have traveled extensively for a period of time you will relate to this movie, especially the packing and keeping things simple aspects of the characters lives. But in the end none of the characters are endearing enough for you to care about them which leaves the movie soulless.
Watchmen (2009)
Boring, slow, zero character development, don't bother
I have just seen this movie in a free preview screening and I can honestly say I would have been really upset if I'd had to pay to see it.
This is a long movie - 2:45hrs and the first hour was utterly pointless, nothing at all happens, I was struggling to stay awake. The plot suddenly makes an appearance at 2 hours in and the last 45 minutes are quite entertaining.
The CGI and cinematography overall are superb, this is a heavily stylized movie- it was a graphic novel after all and the music choices are also excellent.
But there's no plot, none. I saw this movie with a friend and neither of us could figure out the point of the movie at all. I guess you have to have read the graphic novel to have a clue whats happening and why. So in that regard it may be like Dune, which is much more enjoyable if you already know the story.
The violence really is quite graphic - think Kill Bill and you'll know what to expect, not that thats a bad thing, its just graphic.
What a waste - I was really looking forward to this movie and pumped that I was able to attend a preview, now I wish I'd stayed home and watched The Mentalist on TV. Seriously this is a horrible movie.
I Love You, Man (2009)
Saw preview last night - very funny movie
As I said in the title, I saw this movie last night and loved it. The movie will have you laughing and cringing from start to finish.
The Paul Rudd character does a great job of being a complete fish out of water when among a group of guys and very at much at ease amongst a group of women. He finds a new friend (Jason Segel's character), after a couple of hilarious false starts, and starts to learn how to be a "man". The nature of this budding relationship is kept deliberately vague right up until the end of the movie.
I cannot stress just how funny this movie is. I was afraid that it was going to be silly/stupid (like an Adam Sandler/Will Ferrell type movie) but its not, its intelligent and very very funny.
I do wish they had done the ending differently, stay and watch the credits and then you'll know what I mean.
Go see this movie.
