Star Trek: Voyager: The Thaw (1996)
Bonkers and dark ....
I remember watching this episode years ago , when it first came out , I didn't really care for it much then as it seemed to be going off at a tangent from the main story of the series which was the Kazon .
But re watching it , it's a genius episode , so simple , plain sets , no special effects , just good old acting .
The pink guillotine is just chilling , and some of the the characters look like something out of a nightmare ..
The clown could give Stephen Kings clown a run for his money , and the very end of the episode.....where Janeway whispers the last word..... Sends a shiver down spine .
Brill episode ..
Inside Man: Episode #1.4 (2022)
Bonkers , but good
So , first of all if I wanted to watch something realistic , I'd watch True Crime . This offering is completely bonkers , and totally beyond belief and doesn't reflect what would happen in real life .
However , I did enjoy this , it's good to see David Tennant in a role which is not squeaky clean , and he shows his acting chops with the scenes where he's going completely crazy.
The character Janice , is superbly acted , and I think was deliberately made unlikable which leaves the audience kind of rooting for the bad guy .
All in all , entertaining , predictable at times , but doesn't matter because there were plenty of shocks along the way which were unexpected .
Stanley Tucci is great in the Hannibal Lecture esq role .
Give it a try.
Slumberland (2022)
Pleasantly surprised
I was wondering how Jason Momoa would take on this bonkers character , so different to characters he's portrayed in the past . But he smashed it . The girl who played Nemo was superb, a brilliant actress who was perfect for the role . In fact each character was excellently cast and you actually cared about what happened to them . Funny , bonkers , heartwarming , action . This film had it all .
Premise of the film very interesting , it is set on partly the really world and partly the dream world. Nemo has lost her father in a tragic accident and has to find her new path , living in the city with her Uncle who she has never met .
Adventures ensue, mostly in the Dreamworld with her new friend Flip. ( Jason Mamoa)
But all is not as it seems ...
Eternals (2021)
Worth a watch
On the whole I did enjoy this film , although some of the casting was unusual . A couple of the characters are played by such well known actors that I couldn't buy into the fact there were in fact eternals. There was a twist at the end which looks as though will be interesting to explore. Could have done with being a bit shorter . Was incredibly long , and some parts drawn out . Effects were spectacular as we come to expect these days . There is a smattering of comedy thrown in which lightens the general sombre feel .
Worth a watch.
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
Web slinging fun
Spider-man is always a sure thing for guaranteed entertainment , and this offering is certainly entertaining. Some old faces popping up , some tears and some laughs . It's got everything . Get your popcorn and drink and get comfy for a rollercoaster ride .
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
Epic
Just finished watched season 2 which was absolutely fantastic. So , so , so much better than season 1 . The last episode had feature film quality , suspense, action , twists, and lump in the throat moments.
Absolutely can't wait for Season 3 to see what adventures happen next for Discovery. Plus they've got a fantastic opportunity to follow the continuing adventures of the Enterprise ...
Great stuff.
The Umbrella Academy (2019)
Great
Just finished watching the first series , I was a bit undecided at the start , but I've so enjoyed it. Extremely likable characters, very atmospheric , but no gloomy lighting or shaky cam which I hate . The finale was explosive and very nail biting, can't wait to see what happens next . Special mention to the lad who plays number 5 , outstanding acting , he stands out . Well worth a viewing 👍
Star Trek (2009)
Thoroughly enjoyable
I saw this many years ago & I remember going to cinema with some trepidation . I am a Star Trek fan right from the Original Series ,through to The Next Generation, Voyager, DS9 . Plus all the previous films .
Star Trek is an idea of a Universe which ideally we should all strive for , all races, species, sexes , working together in the most wonderful way . Really did not want this new film to ruin the franchise.
Well , I was not disappointed , I came out of the cinema totally energised, entertained , and happy with the end result. Yes the film may have lens flares , lots of action , and the like , which may be construed as veering away from the previous Star Trek universe. But I actually think that this film benefitted from the advances in special effects in recent years which made the whole thing look more 'real' in a way. The previous incarnations of Trek were unable to benefit from this due to technical constraints and funds at the time they were made. But all the necessary ideals put forward by Roddenberry are all there . The casting is brilliant , and with a few notable differences are mostly the same as in the original series.
Obviously each to their own , but I for one was very impressed . My advice would be to ignore the naysayers who have just gone down the list of reviews and blindly put a thumbs down on any review that gives over a 7 and make up your own minds . LLAP 👍
Extras (2005)
Fantastic fun !
Another genius comedy from Ricky Gervais & Steven Merchant. The trials and tribulations of being a struggling extra , who just wants to be given a chance at the big time. And his hapless agent played by Steven Merchant ( who has the most infectious smile in the world)
Filled with major stars every week who completely send themselves up in the most hilarious way . Can imagine only Ricky Gervais could persuade them to act in the way they do ... hilarious!
Daniel Ratcliff, Patrick Stewart, Robert DeNiro , Kate Winslet, Samuel L Jackson , Ben Stiller to name but a few .
So many funny moments but also a fair share of sad, lump in the throat moments in true Gervais/ Merchant style .
Thoroughly enjoyed this , give it a go , you won't regret it .
Tropic Thunder (2008)
Top film
This film should be ridiculous when you read the synopsis, but this film is so enjoyable , lots of laugh out loud moments and it's brilliant how it totally pokes fun at Hollywood blockbuster films. Each character is carefully thought out and played to perfection, but for me Robert Downey Jr really stands out . Look out for all the cameos, there are some really famous faces popping up when you least expect !
10/10
The Good Place (2016)
Perfect
This show is the perfect mix of comedy , drama, action ,and morals.
Such an interesting take on the Afterlife , and quite honestly if this version were true I'd be quite happy ..
Thought provoking , and at times you will have a lump in your throat . Ted Danson is marvellous in this 👍 10/10
Friday Night Dinner (2011)
Easy watching , very funny 😁
Can't believe this show has been going since 2011 and we've only just discovered it.
Thought I wouldn't get past thinking of the Adam character as Will from the Inbetweeners, but we did , quite quickly. Every character has something hilarious to add to each episode, there are no weak links at all. The guest characters seem carefully chosen and brilliantly written for .
The Jim character is genius and so funny each time you see him recoil from his dog Wilson. Please make more episodes ??
Spider-Man: Far from Home (2019)
Great fun !!
A whirlwind of a film with lots of twists and turns. Great plot, lots of nods to Tony Stark and the impact he had on Peter Parker. Will Peter be able to get over his loss and fight the bad guy ? Well worth watching , Fantastic 😁
Men in Black: International (2019)
A great watch
An entertaining, great sequel and myself and my family thoroughly enjoyed it . It's loyal to the original films . Well worth a watch
Stargate (1994)
A must for any sci-fi fan
I saw Stargate at the cinema when it first came out in the 1990's .
A breathtaking film , which was at the time was a completely new take on the sci fi genre . It takes its cue from our own ancient history . In recent times there has been many films, TV shows and documentary which touch on this( ancient astronaut theory) but Stargate is a film which brings it all together wonderfully.
With an awesome musical score , likable characters, excellent special effects for the time and even a TV show spin off ( Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis) this is one that shouldn't be missed.
Lucifer: Who's da New King of Hell? (2019)
Brilliant
What a nail biting , action packed , fantastic finale to an outstanding series. Stands out miles from previous series . It really moves Lucifer's story along and gives a glimpse into his old life and old companions. Well done ..cannot wait to see what's in store next .
