War of the Worlds (2005)
War of the Worlds - Excellent!
I thought this movie was fantastic. I loved the human side of the story involving Tom Cruise as a divorced dad and his not so great relationship with his kids. This relationship was perfectly portrayed - the dialogue and actions of these three people were very realistic. The poor relationship Tom had with his kids made the scenario that was soon to happen even more moving. It made him step up to the plate and be their father.
I also thought that the movie portrayed the desperation (and sometimes not so nice actions) of individuals when they are put into a situation that they cannot control - some rise to the occasion and some simply look for their own self preservation. I definitely felt a desperation as I viewed these individuals trying to escape an almost certain death.
A great summer flick - filled with action and compassion.
Hawaii (2004)
Give the show a chance
Many great television shows have been canceled prematurely because the
networks did not give them a chance to find their voice ('My So Called Life', 'Boomtown'). There are still some shows on today that don't have the ratings, but the networks haven't given up on them ('Alias', '24').
Don't rule out this show based on the first few episodes. Many shows find a
LONG life because they were given a shot (look up the history of Seinfeld if you doubt my comments). The networks need to let these new shows find their
niche. This show has some potential. It's got a great cast and a beautiful
setting. Hang in there Hawaii. I'll keep coming back.
