The VVitch: A New-England Folktale (2015)
Atmospheric, drawn out, somewhat predictable horror.
So it took me 3 viewings of this film. I think the pacing had something to do with that. I wasn't in the right mindset for a horror film this atmospheric. The trailers made it seem like this film would be sheer terror. However, much of the uneasiness comes from the music and the shots. The blood and gore in this was somewhat minimal. Nudity, yes but necessary? Not sure. We have little screen time with the actual coven. But despite the twins trying to "frame"
their older teenage sister, I guessed less than 1/2 way though the film that she would later become one, or was already one. The black goat was slightly predictable as the devil too. I appreciate this film's pacing, and most of the acting. At times I felt the performance was too restrained, but perhaps the filmmaker was trying to stay true to puritanical times. However, the mother was annoying to me and unfair. But I guess she was right in the end. Too bad she didn't live to see it.
Dumbo (2019)
Some Emotion but Left me Feeling Flat & Disappointed
I'm still wondering how this was a Burton film. The story was never that dark to begin with in the original Dumbo. The original movie's tear jerking plot has been boiled down to the first 40 minutes. The rest just seems like villain after unnecessary villain designed to keep Dumbo from his mother, for no really good reason.
The ending of the film left me scratching my head at the decisions the characters made. And I never felt like we got a true Dumbo & Mother reunion moment as it was overshadowed by them leaving for India. Disappointed that I'll have to refer to the original Dumbo as "The Animated Dumbo" now.
Us (2019)
Cinematic, Funny, & Terrifying to the Beat of the Music
Seeing such wildly different ratings for this film let's me know Jordan Peele did exactly what he wanted, create a film that keeps you guessing. While we have seen doppelgänger themes in horror before, this takes the sub-genre to a different level.
We'll start with the Peele's masterful way of combining comedy and horror. Just enough to lull you into a relaxed state, but immediately jarring you out of it a few moments later. The juxtaposition of certain feel good tunes also creates this sense of safety, but this film manages to make every one of these songs terrifying.
The opening creates an absolutely creepy mood that sticks through the whole film. Peele even manages to make a beautiful sunny beach seem eerie. There was enough blood to satisfy gore hounds, while also enough off screen kills and pain to heighten the tension.
Best of all, the film makes you want to understand what it means. I kept guessing throughout the entire film. Just when I thought I had it figured out, the film throws in the final twist. I'm sure I'll be thinking about this masterpiece of horror for a while.
Halloween (2018)
Much Better than H20, Almost a Return to Form
This movie did what it was meant to do, bring us back into the terrifying world of Laurie and Michael Myers. Many of the kills were off screen which seemed somewhat like a cop out to me, but upon retrospect that's what made the original film so great. Some of the decisions made by the films characters left me scratching my head at times, but don't all good horror flicks? The cinematography was great, and the film understood suspense well. 8/10
Gekijô-ban - Bishôjo senshi Sêrâ Mûn R (1993)
Truly the Best of the Sailor Moon Movies
I love the Sailor Moon S movie, but this one blows it away. I loved the backstory with Tuxedo Mask and the alien. The film is beautifully animated and full of heart. It made me laugh, and cry. The sailor scouts once again find themselves in peril and use the power of friendship and love to save the day. It also touches on loneliness, and being a child who moved around a lot, this meant a lot to me. Will watch this over and over again!
Aladdin (2019)
Skeptical at First but Left Happy!
I definitely get the hate towards these Disney live action remakes. It seems unoriginal and a total nostalgia cash grab. But I put all those feelings aside for this film, and I was really surprised! Great dancing, set design, and costumes. Aladdin and Jasmine had my favorite casting, Jafar was brooding but didn't quite have the flair of the original. No one can really live up to the Robin Williams Genie but Will smith made me smile and chuckle. As a whole, the film made me laugh, cry, and sing. It's my favorite Disney remake so far, a success!
Captain Marvel (2019)
Loved the Capt!
Good pacing, lots of twists, enjoyed the 90s soundtrack and the acting too. Confused why people criticized Brie Larson for not smiling, there were lots of heartwarming moments and she does in fact smile. One of my favorite MCU movies so far.
