Impatient One
19 April 2021
This was bad, but bad in such away as to be a waste of time.

Scientist Steve lent no credibiliy to a story that was already lacking in credibility with the good "doctor" making up things as he went along. Then we find out who patient fifteen is and he goes, "oh I didnt tell you?".

Complete an utter waste of time. I would giv it a zero if such scores were allowed alas I cannot. I would prefer to give a one or a two is because films such as Manos: The Hands of Fate (1 star) and Birdemic (2 stars) are terrible but at least they are trying to be entertaining. This is a mess. Stay away, at least Birdemic had some redeeming values.

I feel sorry for the patient because he seemed tormented everyone else was horrid.

Oh Brother

"A Sister" is a 16 minute edge of your seat roller coaster ride. The pace is frenetic and relentless, you feel as if you are in the back seat of the car. Wonderful job by director Delphine Girard whom I would like see get a chance to direct a full length feature and kudos to Veerle Baetens as the 911 operator who is cool and poised under pressure and gives a performance you can feel.

Brilliant
11 March 2021
This movie in a few minutes moved me. It is haunting and brilliant. The cinematography is stark and real. I totally enjoyed this film and thought it deserved the short Oscar in 2020. The "actors" are very good, the parents wonderful. The mom is believable, loyal, and trustworthy. The father is a smoldering cauldron ready to bubble over and scald his family. Wonderful piece of film making, the "Brotherhood" is more a father son relationship but quite compelling. .

Your Kidding
15 February 2021
So I got hooked on this after the first episode, starting loosing interest in the second and third episode. I stuck with it and it did pick up after episode 5 but when looked at in its entirety I must say fair overall. Had some good points, had some good acting, had some laughable points and some terrible acting. I don't think the actor playing Adam was horrible, he just didn't have much to work with. Same for Fia who I thought had an expressive, exotic look. I see potential. Detective Costello was good - but why was she always shown eating? The grandmother / senator was a mosey body and Charlie was reminiscent of his role in the wire. Cranston was good as was the prosecuting attorney. The trouble I think was perhaps it was too long, but I really think the trouble was with the editing. I don't want to give away any spoilers but the video in episode 10 they show and what is a huge part of the defense is not where or how that act took place. How did that gets past anyone? Don't waste 10 hours of your life on this. Read a book instead.

No Margin for Error
25 January 2021
This is one of the better noir films I have seen lately. It is hard to imagine anyone more hardboiled than Charles McGraw except perhaps the great Lawrence Tierney. Mary Windsor is excellent in this and her dialogue will have you hitting the rewind button to hear some of the lines again. A good job by Jacqueline White as well with a nifty twist and what an interesting story her own life is. All around a good film with some interesting back stories. A real pleasure. Dont miss this one even narrowly.

Tense, in a word

Very well done noir. Richard Basehart is brilliant and him and Cyd Charisse make a great couple. But the one that steals the show is Audrey Trotter one of my favorite molls. She is slimy and oily and when she gets her comeuppance you will cheer out loud. Great thriller with some twists and suspense. Highly recommend this one for a late night or rain afternoon. You will not be disappointed.

Marvelous early Hitchcock
25 January 2021
This movie has intrigue, suspense, wonderful actors, action, great direction and cinematography all the things we would come to expect and enjoy from the master but this is one of his earliest American films. It is marvelous. Joel McCrae, Laraine Day and George Sanders are all brilliant as is the entire supporting cast. Highly recommend this for any film buff or history buff. You will not be disappointed.

Ran Out of Gas
20 January 2021
I knew very little about this film prior to watching it but what I did know had me looking forward to it. It started off very promising. Edge of your (car) seat excitment but it couldnt sustain it. The limited sets, primarily inside of a car, attest to the limited budget of the film but that isnt a bad thing. Not at all. I think the film was innovative and was enjoyable. I think what happened here and happens a lot is it got to the 75% mark and didnt know where to go so it when into a tailspin crossed lanes and ran out of gas. I would recomend watching this, just dont expect too much. Why only a 5 then? Well I am a hard grader and if The Godfather is a 9 how can this be a 6.

The Big Heat (1953)

The Big HOT
12 January 2021
This movie is fantastic. Every piece an nuance is perfect. Fritz Lang and particularly director of photography Charles Lang are really on the top of their game. Glen Ford may have been better, but not in anything I have seen. As good...yes. Better? I fear not. This movie must have been something when it was released almost 60 years ago and the country was reading about organized crime in the daily tabloids. But I digress. As mentioned Glenn Ford is great as is my favorite moll - Gloria Graham. Jocelyn Brando is wonderful as the supporting doting wife, cooking steaks and sharing a smoke and a scotch. Lee Marvin will make you lose sleep. The whole cast is terrific and watch for Morticia Adams (Carolyn Jones) making a sultry appearance. Great cast, great script, great cinematography. Wonderful film, if you like noir, classics, crime drama's, all or some of the above make a date with The Big Heat you will not be disappointed.

Cornered is a Tragedy
31 December 2020
I recently watched this on cable and did not realize it was 12 years old. I remeber the fateful night when Billy Collins was beaten to a pulp and the hands of Luis Resto. This documentary did a great job of exploring Luis Resto and while it set out to vindicate him it wound up making him more guilty for what transpired. While he was the one throwing the blows I think Panama Lewis and deceased Arty Curly where the real ones at fault here. I am not excusing Luis Resto in the least, but I think he was used and manipulated by others. While guilty I find him less so than the others and also a victim. This movie abounds with victims not the least of which was Billy Collins and his wife and daughter. His father was portrayed as something of a money grabber as well but I do not know if that is true. He lost not only his son, but one of his prized fighters. Highly entertianing, not for the faint of heart but I recommend it to any boxing fan especially anyone who remembers the fight and might not recall all of the sordid details of what took place.

DB Confusion
30 November 2020
This was enjoyable at best, ridiculous at worst and falls somewhere in the middle, hence my score of 5. More like 4+, but I digress. As some other reviewers mentioned the story of Bob / Barbra was by far the most absurd and should not have been included. The man and wife who tell the story said Barb got very agitated when he said "oh your DB Cooper" but then at some future point in time still allowed him to comb her hair, put sunglasses on and take her picture to show the resembalance to Cooper, a picture that was then destroyed? Not buying it. The niece's story was comprised of suppressed memories, so I do not find them credible. I do not think she or the women in Florida or any of the people were lying as some people have suggested. I think they are remembering things the way they want to, or the way that fits their particular narrative. The copycat hijacker seemed most plausible to me. But why did he have a gun on the second flight when no mention of a gun was brought up on the first flight. Also I would have liked to have the stewardess and the college student from the first flight give their impression of if they thought Floyd was Dan Cooper. Raises more questions than it answers but added some new twists I had not heard before. Not bad for a rainy day when nothing is on.

Rope this one in!

Brilliant as they say over the pond. Binge watched season 1 yesterday and the show imporved with each episode. Touching, and funny. I didnt know what to expect going in, I assumed (and you make an arse...) a bumbling American coach out of his element and out of his (premier) league. I was wrong. Jason Sudeikis is marvelous as is the rest of the cast. Ted Lasso is a great show and I cant wait for season 2.

Get on Board

If you wanted to teach someone about American cinema I think this is one of the films you would show them. Caine Mutiny is brilliant. I never knew much of the back story (the USS Hull and the Typhoon known as Cobra) which I have researched since seeing the film. I would recommned this to anyone interested in great films and I am sure this must appear on many of those X number of fims you must see lists. The story is great, the filming is great but what really does it is the acting. Van Johnson, I think, stole the picture. Fred MacMurray was great as well. I love seeing him in anything different from his My Three Sons role which growing up in the 60's was how I first was introduced to him. When I saw Double Idemnity for the first time....well mind blown will suffice. Another stand out was Robert Francis who I had never seen in a film before. WHat a tragic loss with his passing at 25 years of age. You may have noticed I left out the two characters who get the most recoognition for this film, Jose Ferrer and Humphrey Bogart. They have received, rightfully so, plenty of accolades and they are great. But dont see the film for them. See if for Johnson, MacMurray and Francis. You will not be disappointed.

STOP!
23 September 2020
And watch this movie! I found this movie purely by happenstance and am I glad I did. I had previously never heard of it, but I am so glad I wathed it. From the quirky characters to the witty free flowing dialogue to the rediculous and oh so spot on circumstances that the characters find themselves in - all very well done. The actors do a great job, especially Sarah Polley and Katie Holmes, but everyone is great. If you see this film advertised and arent sure if its worth your time...stop to watch it, do not pass on Go

Into the NOW
17 September 2020
This film is a brilliant example of noire. Director Tourneur does a wonderful job in what some called a very understated way. This film bristles with excitment and tension which leaps off the screen. Robert Mitchum is fantastic as is Jane Greer and the, then, unknown Kirk Douglas. You can see him chomping at the bit, virtually busting out of his pin stripe suit ala Mr. Hyde to show us the Kirk Douglas we would all come to know and love. Through all the twists, turns, red herrings and double crosses it is Mr. Mitchum that drives this film. His low key, aw shucks deliveries draw you in and make you really feel for Jeff. Great job, great film. If you see this on cable or one of your streaming services make an appointment to watch it. This one should not be missed! Also note worthy in this film is the scenery and the supporting roles of Dick Moore and the (wow!) gorgeous Rhonda Fleming. Marny from the Cafe is bright, funny and sassy in her limited screen time. Out of the Past should be part of your future.

Let me start this by saying I have only watched the first two episodes. When I finish season 1 my ratings may change up (unlikely) or down (possible), but what I have seen so far is thrilling. The introduction of each character is novel and non-unlinear which I enjoyed. You can really feel for each of them and I cant wait to learn nore about them and their backstories. A bright and refreshing start to an intriguing show and the differences between this and TWD are stark and most welcome!

Still a bit Rusty
16 September 2020
For an hour or two of mindless entertainment this show is spot on. Mike and Avery are great. They are like Abbott and Costello restore a car. Or Ralph Kramden and Ed Norton open a body shop. But after a couple of episodes its like "come on". As many reviews I read state- too much on the side stories, not enough on the restorations. And there is too much whining about money and lack there of. The problem with this show is the same with a lot of programs - they are good in small doses but to binge? No - too many holes. Too much gristle, not enough meat, same things repeated too often to hear or see in a short period of time. I refer to this as "The 24 Dilemma" . You can watch Jack Bauer save the world every month or so, but when he does it twice in the span of 4 hours its too much. Watch it for the guilty pleasure it is. Mike is a hoot.

Im-perfect
16 September 2020
Recently I read something about The Perfection and how disturbing it was, so I thought "I must see this!" I believed it was a new movie, perhaps made by Netflix, so I tuned it in. The premise was ok, the first third of the movie had me thinking, but when they leave the bus it just went right down hill. Particularly after the flash backs. I was disappointed. The two female leads were good and I would watch them in other movies but the plot was lacking and the ending reminded me of one of the worst movies I have ever seen - Tusk - with Justin Long and I mean that in a - oh no, not a good way. Watch it if your intrigued like I was. Stay away if you can.

Stupendous?

No, its not but it is funny. The two leads work well together and I think had some real chemistry. Totally believable? Of course not, there were holes but all in all I found this to be a fairly funny picture with characters I liked. I recommend.

More of a lie down then a stand
26 May 2020
This movie was slow, plodding and telegraphed many of its suprises. I liked the actors and I was puling for them, particularly Michael ONiell as the patriarch and Jacqueline Toboni as his daughter. The Sheriff was creepy but I have a hard time seeing him as anything but Shooter McGavin. This movie was like a poor made for tv flick. Numb and mindless.

Joking?

Phoenix was over the top spooky and I guess very good in this role, but as a movie there wasnt much there. His mom played by Frances Conroy was good. I admire her talent, DeNiro doesnt move me much the past few years (decades?) and his teeth look like Martin Scorsese used some CGI magic left over from the Irishman to whiten them. I think the high rating for the film here are based on Phoenix's performance and not the film. A performance which I fear we will one day view as overrated.

Blood and Money and I want mine back
26 May 2020
I ordered this movie on demand this past weekend, my bad. I didnt want to watch it, the choice was this or something else, my wife voted this and I went a long. Boy I wish we went for the other. Tom Berenger seems like a nice guy and he is good when not asked to carry a film. Unfortunately he s asked to do most of the heavy lifting in this one. It ca be all his fault, there wasnt much to work with here. On a positive note - the waitress was good in her small role and I would like to see more of her. Save your time and money, pass on this one.

Killer Cove (2019)

I like "bad" movies, but......
17 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I saw this titled as "Fear Cove" in an article of underrated thrillers on Netflix. Wow. The first thing you notice is the acting. The protagonist is introduced to us with acting that would make a high school theatre club director cringe. it doesn't get better. By anyone. The acting is laugh out loud bad. The story is weird and creepy but the charecters and their stupidity make this unwatchable. For instance - the main character is being stalked, she goes to the police, hires a private eye (actually the line "private eye candy" by the best friend was clever), Is being tormented by her ex husband and when she gets home from work not only is her front door unlocked, when she goes in she doesn't lock it behind her. Give me cheesy B flicks all day but I am sorry I watched this one. Tak a pass.

But I am a tuff grader and nothing can ever be a 10. At least not yet. This show is fantastic, I was so anxious to watch this Danny McBride vehicle that I waited for the first three episodes to air before I started watching them so I could semi binge it. Was I disappointed no. Except now I have to wait 5 days for the next episode. What a lark, I love it. The three Gemstone children carry the show, they could almost be teen agers the way they interact. Great Chemistry and John Goodman is the patriarch that keeps them all in line. Well...somewhat. The writing is brilliant and the characters are great, pay attention there is a lot going on and some of it is very subtle. Great ensemble piece - highly recommend.

Disjointed at best
20 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I was hooked after the first episode. A compelling story, for sure, but it doesn't flow that well. They give you the time line but then jump around. What do I know. The one thing that stuck out for me in episode 2 - the girl that claims she was in the library with him on that fatal day. Toward the end of the second episode she claims she never read about or followed the case. Really? You have potential evidence and all you did was stop by the kids house for "15 minutes and spoke to his relatives". Waiting for episode three not sure what I think as far as this boys guilt or innocence. The witnesses for the prosecution especially Jay Wilde and that Jennifer are sketchy at best. The show, as one might expect is biased toward his innocence. Reminds me of the far superior HBO mini series "The Night".
