Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997)
Addicted
Due to the show's age (being only 4 years younger than myself), I wouldn't give the show a chance at first but, after a long, dragging day, I decided to watch an episode on Netflix. At the moment, I'm half way through season three within two weeks -I'm addicted. The characters are all well thought out -although a little stereotypical. You have the heroin, Buffy, who fulfills her duties although she wishes for a normal life (like most "forced" heroes). The friends, Willow and Xander, who are a little on the strange side but helpful. I find myself oddly similar to Willow (as much as I'd hate to admit it). Then you have the guardian; Giles (admittedly one of my favorite characters). The only character I have a slight problem with is Cordelia. The casting, graphics and story lines are all wonderfully done. This show could easily beat out most (MOST not all) modern day "vampire" shows.
Red Dawn (2012)
Honestly Shocked
The reviews I've read about this movie and previous movies (see my review for Vampire Journals) has proved to me, and should prove to you, that you can't take the advice of a review. You must just see the movie and decide for yourself. I've learned over the years that sometimes you must just watch a movie and stop trying to read or think to much into the plot -that's when you start to dislike something. This is a fictional movie, not a documentary. Not everything is meant to be completely believable.
I can honestly say that I LOVED the movie. My mother, who has seen the original, did as well. I liked the fact that it was teenagers trying to take back what was theirs -they weren't your typical whiny, "why us" bunch who just sit back and wait for their parents to rescue them. The acting was fairly good in my opinion. Then again, Chris Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson are in my favorite actors list.
I could pretty much see what was coming throughout most of the movie, one of the few downfalls. But I was completely caught off guard when Jed was killed. I kept looking at my mother and asking "He's not dead, right? He's just knocked out, right?". Though the transition from reckless teenager to leader was a little fast, I liked how Matt stepped up and took control of the team.
Now, the ending. The ending seemed a little...open to me. They never really completed the story. A pet peeve of mine. But it seems they were leaving it for the possibility of a sequel with the room to back out if they wanted to.
Still, if you aren't the type to try and read too much into a plot or expect every detail to be on the dot, you should definitely give this a shot.
Sinister (2012)
Just Another Boogeyman?
Though in a certain scene, he is referred to as "Mr. Boogie" in a photo Ellison Oswalt discovers; No. This is not just another boogeyman movie. I would have given it a ten but, as it is categorized as horror, I just couldn't bring myself to do it.
I must say, it is very refreshing to sit down and watch a movie without being plagued by scenes of peoples' anatomy and bodies soaked in blood. In this day and age, the "horror" genre has been belittled to porn, blood and gore. The genre lost it's interesting stories a long time ago as, sadly, those three things are apparently enough to sustain the life of a "horror" movie. So, the fact that this movie almost lacks those and actually has a story to it is a MAJOR plus. I say "almost" due to a few scenes that involve a knife and lawn mower though not much is shown.
I'm not sure if Bagul (spelling is probably wrong), was/is truly a Pagan deity but I found myself drawn to the idea. The "Eater of Children" who can travel through images of himself and corrupt the minds of children who, in turn, kill their family. Or, that's what the movie depicts. So, good work writers/director(s) if he was of your creation!
The characters of this movie were believable and the actors portrayed them almost perfectly. I found myself irritated with the sheriff in his two appearances and I felt bad for the Deputy at certain points.
I can say that I didn't see the ending coming. I knew that moving homes hadn't ended the story. Anyone with half a brain or slight knowledge of horror films could guess that. I don't want to spoil too much, so I'll leave at I expected a happy ending.
Now, as I said above, I couldn't bring myself to give this movie a full ten because it wasn't exactly...scary. I jumped at a few moments and I was holding my breath for a few seconds but I wasn't shaking behind a pillow. Then again, it is pretty hard to find a movie like that anymore.
Vampire Journals (1997)
A Little Disappointed...
I received this movie (along with 19 others in a set) as a gift from my sister. I decided to read some reviews and check the rating here, as I do with most movies I watch anymore. I thought; "Okay, not bad reviews. Let's try this!".
I'm going to try and make this as short and simple as possible. This wasn't an awful movie. I'm keeping the year it was made in mind, so I wont mention the bad effects or camera. I WILL mention the bad acting. The character of Zachary seemed to be overplaying the "brooding" a bit. I'm not sure I'm using the right word. The character of Cassandra was a little awkward to me. I didn't understand the role of Dimitri in this film. Just to be shooed away like an annoying animal? The plot had potential, even if the vengeful vampire child storyline is overused. BloodRayne for instance. There were moments that I felt had just been tossed in as filler footage. There never really seemed to be much of a catch. Throughout the movie, it was the same pace. I also couldn't believe the ending. I highly doubt that a vampire "lord" would be killed so easily (and stupidly, mind you). So, needless to say, I was a little disappointed.
Greystone Park (2012)
Glad I only paid a dollar to rent this...
Normally, I wouldn't write a bad review (I try to be a nice person) but this needed a warning label for others planning to watch. Honestly, I do NOT like "found footage" movies, they're annoying and hard to focus on. When I rented this, I had no clue that's what it was but when I popped it in to the player, I decided to give it a chance anyhow. Bad move. In the beginning, the guy used night vision to see in the cemetery and, as the inside of the building became darker, I began to wonder why they weren't using it in there? I understand effect and all but, really, there comes a point where watching a black screen with nothing but screaming and breathing is just...pathetic. The effect where they distort the camera when something just slightly good is happening (and by good I mean the characters getting attacked) just kept pissing me off. There were a few scenes, I will not specify, where I felt it had been ripped off from other movies. In the end, I shut this off and sat in place just plain confused. So, I was wondering, can anybody tell me what happened? Summary: Bad acting, bad filming, BAD MOVIE. I'm glad I only had to pay a dollar to rent this.
