Sayonara no asa ni yakusoku no hana o kazarô (2018)
Just wonderful
This is one of the most beautiful and heartrending films I have ever seen. I cannot fault it in any way. It has such resonance about the elasticity of time. I think of the Japanese term Mono no aware- the poignancy of life and yet its inherent beauty. Just loved it- a real tear jerker too...
Xi you ji zhi: Sun Wukong san da Baigu Jing (2016)
Super film
This film is absolutely brilliant.. The effects are stunning and the whole thing is beautifully done. I loved the old 70s series and the story, based loosely on fact has always fascinated me. It's a film that can't be faulted.
Kaguya-hime no monogatari (2013)
Brilliant.
A truly wonderful film that doesn't deserve to get less than 10 out of 10. It was rather heartbreaking in parts, especially the ending, but beautifully animated and the story was really excellent. Not a dull moment. Anyone who has given this low marks mustn't have a heart!
The Outpost (2018)
Absorbing Fantasy
I have enjoyed watching this series up to now- Jessica Green is really good in the lead role- a sort of updated Xena in many ways. It's standard stuff really but well produced and acted with some good characters. Unfortunately Game of Thrones (which I don't watch anymore) tends to dominate this genre so it may go the way of shows like The Shannara Chronicles which was unceremoniously axed after two seasons and Marvels Inhumans after just one...Hopefully this will continue for a little while longer!
Supergirl (2015)
Super!
Easily the best of the DC series. Melissa Benoist is fantastic as Supergirl and it stands head and shoulders above Arrow, Flash and Legends of Tomorrow. I like all four but this is by far the best as regards plot and acting. Hopefuly it will continue for some time!
The Secret of Moonacre (2008)
Lovely Fantasy
Really nice to see a fantasy without the sex and violence we get nowadays-just a really good family film with brilliant acting and some beautiful moments-Dakota Blue Richards was superb as Maria and the Moon Princess in a real feel good film sadly getting rarer. I hope they make a sequel, though I doubt it.

Stan Lee's Lucky Man (2016)
Lucky indeed
Probably the best thing on TV at the moment. It's brilliantly acted and never boring-keeps moving and is always exciting. Very glad that a 3rd series was commissioned and hope there is more to come. James Nesbitt is brilliant as is Sienna Guillory as Eve (my favourite character). It's also a great idea for a series-very imaginative.
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (2010)
Best of the three
This is by far my favourite of the trilogy- I found Prince Caspian a little disappointing- it lacked magic-but this has magic aplenty and more excitement than the previous two put together- also not so obsessed with war and battles as the others. Just a great fantasy with a heart- which is magical even for someone older like me. As Roald Dahl says "those who don't believe in magic will never find it." This film emphasised more the beauty of Narnia rather than showing it is a war torn country.
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017)
Great Sci-Fi Film
I liked this film a lot-the visuals are incredible and the acting excellent, especially from Cara Delevingne -the storyline is fascinating and well thought out- There were lots of really nice touches to the film which raised it above many others such as "Guardians of the Galaxy". I would definitely watch it again. One or two low points preventing it from getting a perfect 10 but overall a thumbs up
The Owl Service (1969)
TV as it should be
This is one of the best TV shows ever produced, in the same vein as the "Prisoner". It has an edge that is missing from drama nowadays. The 60's and 70's were a unique time for culture- film, drama and music and this is no exception. Imaginative and eerie at the same time, with solid performances from all the cast- it is well worth buying the DVD. which includes a booklet that gives some insights into the making of the series and the Welsh legend which was the inspiration. A classic and a rare masterpiece of TV.
Agatha Raisin (2014)
Better than Miss Marple
I am not usually a fan of murder mysteries and tend to avoid them, but this is different. Ashley Jensen is absolutely brilliant in the title role and that is really what attracted me to it. I watched the first episode thinking I would find it as dull as most other similar series, but from then on I was hooked. Her clumsiness at times adds charm to the character and she is also funny and attractive at the same time. The setting of the series is beautiful and reminiscent of Midsommer murders, only this series is much better in every way. The comic moments are well done and the acting is perfect for the tone of the series.
I am hoping there will be a second series which I will look forward to very much.
Lucy (2014)
I Like Lucy!
One of the most interesting films I've seen since the Fountain. After sitting through dull films like the Hunger Games this was a refreshing change - an intelligent film, beautifully acted by Scarlet Johansson. The ending was beautiful and moving. Its one of those movies, like the Fountain, that few will appreciate but it is set to become a cult classic in the future. Not a film that suits everyone, as reviews on this site shows. It may be scientifically inaccurate, but it is after all Science FICTION and most films of that genre deal with things that are scientifically impossible or improbable! All in all a very good film, if it isn't exactly a masterpiece.
Snow White and the Huntsman (2012)
Much better than I expected
This turned out to be one of my favourite films of all time. Charlize Theron was menacing and superb as Ravenna and Kristen Stewart perfect as Snow White. The dialogue was brilliant due to an intelligent script and the acting throughout was flawless. The film was never boring even for one second and there was a nice mixture of action and tender moments that added to the overall effect of the film. I loved the character of Snow White -so much different from the sassy violent heroines of other films- very refreshing. I must admit that the title was a little off putting but it did not disappoint and anyone with a little magic in their hearts will be able to watch this film several times. I can't really understand some of the negative reviews, but it takes all sorts to make a world as they say.
