this film only gained two out of ten, and that was for the buildup eerie scenes only. this film started out good, and was very chilling to watch. however it didn't fully explain the end! when the end was near, i was so gripped by this film, and i really wanted to know what was haunting the young girl. instead i got an ending that was fairly rushed, unexplained, and one that left me and my friends guessing what had gone on! was her mother a witch? how was Betsy alive if she died at a young age? it appeared that she was being haunted by herself, how this is possible i do not know. in other comments it appears that she conjured up her spirit to defeat her dad. but if she was dead how the hell was she alive?! her mother knew all along yet this wasn't shown. weird ending, great beginning, wouldn't recommend unless you wish to be mislead and confused. pick up a copy of Emily rose instead, much better.

pure comedy.its gets a score of 2 from me. this film made me laugh even though it is supposed to be a horror film. Watched at the age of 14 with two friends, one was scared, me and my other friend however found the film hilarious for a horror i would say the effects are decent of its time, but the overall throw together of dialogue, plot and mise en scene are poor. one example would be when the chainsaw comes out of the plug, if anybody could possible be scared of this then i pity the fool. it is pure comedy in certain parts and the acting is that of what i would cast in a spoof film.
2 out of 10 is pushing, however i recommend it as i think its a laugh a minute film.

I really found this film to be original, and thrilling, with all the twists and the red herring turning out not to be, was brilliant. I am a big fan of horror, and i believe that the creators behind this film have revolutionised the horror genre. this film should be in the top 250 and i don't know why it isn't. the sequels were good and the trilogy was rounded up nicely, however the original scream will always be the best, its original and new. if IMDb have a top ten slasher movie, this would be number #1. The hidden messages and puns were fantastic and overall i like how Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson (both fantastic) lay down the horror rules and totally break them, classic.
