Kadal (2013)
Went expecting to see a bad movie! Turned out to be downright horrible!
I must admit I went to watch this movie with very low expectations! I mean for past many years Mani Ratnam has been churning out bad movies with his previous outing bombing big time! I used to be a big fan of Mani Ratnam. Notice I said 'used to'. That was the time when he made great movies like Mouna Ragam, Nayagan, Agni Natchatram, Anjali, Idhayathai Thirudathe, Thalapathi and finally Roja! Any hardcore Mani Ratnam fan will freely admit these movies were the best he ever made. So when was the time I stopped or rather reduced being a fan of Mani Ratnam. It was with a movie called Thiruda Thiruda. Prior to that many felt Mani can never go wrong and any story he films will be very good without any doubt! Thiruda Thiruda changed that mindset. It proved even great filmmakers can go wrong! After Thiruda Thiruda not many of his films could match upto his best. I feel Iruvar sort of matched upto it but that movie went through lots of cuts that the final product didn't make any sense and one couldn't help feeling they watched a half baked product. So apart from Iruvar almost all of his movies have been downright horrible. He has been lowering the bar with every movie he has released after Roja!
So now you understand that I went with zero expectations to watch Kadal. I felt like I don't think he can make a badder movie than Raavan! Alas! Alas! How wrong I was! This one is far far worse than raavan so much so that Raavan seems like a classic in comparison! Why Mani Why do you keep lowering your standards as a filmmaker with every new one you make! Are you having some anger against the audience that you keep torturing us with every new release of yours?
I was also under impression Mani was a secular cum atheist person. I don't think prior to Kadal he has ever touched a subject related to god in any of his movies! But kadal felt like a 3 hour marathon on Christian beliefs and it didn't help the movie in anyway except leaving one in shock that a person like mani made such a film! There have been many movies prior to this with Christian backdrops - Bobby, Saagar come to mind instantly but those movies didn't preach religion! It just so happened Christianity was incidental to the movie and not the main issue about it! But Kadal seems more like a movie preaching Christianity with some characters thrown in to justify it! By the way let me mention I have nothing against Christianity. I am a secular person who believes and accepts all religions as they are! So if anyone felt offended by my saying the bit about Christianity in this movie I apologise if I remotely even hurt your feelings in anyway. It's just that when you go to watch a movie advertised as a love story made by a filmmaker like mani ratnam you just don't expect to see such things!
