Rocky Balboa (2006)
9/10
A Worthy Addition To The Series - Inspirational!
28 January 2007
I would have given this film a ten, but no film I have ever seen deserves a ten... yet. I have long been a fan of the Rocky films although less so with Rocky 3. What I enjoy about the films is that Rocky is a gentle, and simple person, an underdog, who wins the hearts of the people. Granted in Rocky 3 he was a millionaire and a bit more civilised and that is probably why that isn't my favourite. Anyway, I digress. Rocky Balboa sees our hero in familiar surroundings, being thrust into the chance of a fight that has shades of Rocky 1 and 2. I sat there watching it having deliberately not investigated the plot on the 'net. I knew that Stallone had planned for Rocky to die at the end of Rocky 5, would this happen at the end of Rocky Balboa, I wondered?

The editing is fantastic, with good use of archive footage. The training montage is there, as expected. There is humour and there is sadness.

Stop reading this now, and go and see it. You won't be sorry.

Casino Royale (2006)

A Totally New Direction
15 November 2006
I have just returned from seeing Casino Royale and have had a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

Last year when Daniel Craig was announced as Bond I have to admit, I had my misgivings. I was all set to join the ranks of the Craig-haters and try to lobby for the return of Brosnan (then my favourite - and there's your first clue).

There is no way that Brosnan could have pulled off this film (Sorry Pierce), this was Daniel Craig's moment and he has proved himself to be an excellent Bond. The reboot idea is fantastic and the opening sequence is truly awesome. The film has some great comic moments but the best thing about it is the gritty realism. Bond bleeds, he fights hard, he even looks right in the tuxedo.

The film does have one or two gadget heavy moments which do let the film slip from a 9-10 star to an 8 star for me. But on the whole, I loved the step away from gadgets.

Long live Daniel Craig as Bond!

Water's Edge (1990)

An inspirational film
22 August 2006
I first saw this on television in either the late 80s or early 90s and I immediately wished that I had taped it as it was superb.

It features a girl called Lucy who is a bit of a recluse and has a bit of mystery about her. She spends ages with her head in the village pond looking at the wreckage of a world war 2 plane. Another local girl discovers Lucy's secret and tells the local vicar, played by Dudley Sutton. Also, as a bit of a side-plot there are two lads who are waiting to set off the biggest fireworks rocket that they could find.

I wish I could tell you more but it has been so long since I saw it and I only just remembered its name.

The film is, in essence a coming of ages rites of passage type of film. Well worth watching if you can.

The Descent (2005)
8/10
Excellent Film and Very Scary
18 February 2006
Neil Marshall has done it again! Dog Soldiers was a masterpiece - a werewolf and soldiers film for the boys. The Descent is a film for the girls. Actually, that's not fair. This film is fantastic! Like Dog Soldiers, it doesn't rely on a massive budget. It relies on a good story to do the job.

The Descent tells the story of a group of girls who go exploring an uncharted cave and find something that they don't really want to encounter. I'm not going to say anymore because that's all I knew about the film when I watched it and I thought it was brilliant. And the ending is superb.

When I write a horror novel I want Neil Marshall to turn it into a film. He is a genius.

Can they not do anything right?

Warning: Spoilers
What a load of toilet this film was. I've seen it twice now and I really cant say anything nice about it other than the sex scenes were okay - but more on that in a moment.

Based on Bram Stoker's novel The Jewel of the Seven Stars (itself not a very interesting book) this tells the story of blah blah blah. Quite frankly, after ten minutes I couldn't care less. The acting is total nosh and you never really understand anything that goes on.

*** Now for Spoilers *** Now the sex scenes: how can that fat bloke pull so many babes? Come on, they're only fillers to keep you from turning off.

And what's with that humping in the bath got to do with anything? Why is that maid spying? Who is getting rogered in the tub? And why does the door handle bleed? If you're thinking about this film, just don't. Get the slightly better (but not by much) Hammer Horror Blood From the Mummy's Tomb.

Utter Rubbish
16 February 2006
Don't bother with this film. I did and wish I didn't. I couldn't wait for it to end. It's unbelievable and just one of the worst films ever.

I thought it would be at least entertaining but there was so much that could have been explored but was glossed over. The special effects were dire and the acting was wooden.

This movie must have been made on a budget of less than $100. I can't see how the filmmakers could have spent any more on this.

If your ambition is to see every mummy film ever made, then you'll probably watch it. If you want something scary for a night in, rent something else.

Awesome

I can't believe that they don't make films like this anymore!!!!! This film is excellent. It has great characters i.e. Cider and fantastic acting from the seminal David Essex. The theme tune and opening sequence is the best ever and just makes you want to ride motorbikes. The training montage is far better then anything in Rocky and I have been eating Alpen ever since. And the ending is fabulous from the moment Barry Sheene pops a wheelie to the dramatic climax. That Bridges bloke is excellent as the villain and David Essex has some fantastic lines such as "Can I have my bike back". Look for the superb Nick Brimble in a cameo as a tall hard man, a role that he has made his own. My mate likes this film so much, he now races motorbikes. And another mate, well his mum loves the early scene of the dudes on scramblers. If you like motorbikes, you'll love this film. Oh yeah, don't watch the "new" ending on DVD as it is pump.
