Juliette Binoche is an actress in touch with her heart
14 April 2024
Another beautiful performance, that brings to life the words on the page. She is an actress in full command of her craft. Her performance is a master class in expressing conflicting subtext in a single moment on screen. Skillfully capturing the insecurities of an aging woman in a society that is obsessed with the beauty of youth. She effortlessly navigates the complex structure of the film. Her subtle shifts in tone, unite the film with a delicate thread of tension that keep the audience one step behind the next twist. And like so many great French films, the story does not end when the credits roll - the characters find a place in your imagination.

Fall (I) (2022)

Dumb movie, smart financing
14 January 2023
Anyone who knows anything about climbing, probably wished the women were hit by the semi truck on the way to the tower. What follows can only be described as dopes on a rope.

The best part of the movie: reading endlessly lucid bad reviews written by average folk, who could have easily been technical advisors on this movie.

Though revealing the second woman's cleavage at the midpoint of the movie was a brilliant piece of writing - the truly remarkable feat of filmmaking - was earning over 20 million at the box office for a low budget 3 million dollar B-movie.

Spoiler alert: It's the audience that takes the fall.

Dope?
6 April 2022
This was an inspiring documentary. It highlights what it takes to be exceptional. No magic. No gifted attributes. Simply tenacious, focused, hard work and an indomitable spirit. Tremendous.

Random thought: Considering Taiwan's cross-strait relations with China, and Chen-Ming's status as a national hero in his country - was he ever tested for drug-induced tendonitis?

I Am Mother (2019)

Special affects rather than effects

Warning: Spoilers
I'lI jump to the end (spoilers ahead). I've read several explanations of the ending of this film, and I've not read one that mentions the elephant in the room - or in literal terms - Mother Mary in the shipping container.

The tiny statue embodies the original immaculate conception, and Mommy gearest's ultimate distain of irrationality. It's the "reason" Mother planted the narrative in Woman, and allowed her to survive - along with the paper dogma she kept close to her heart. It seems to me, the ending symbolizes a positivistic destruction of mysticism.

Though ironically, whether intentional or not, when Daughter assumes the role of Mother holding the baby boy, there is an ever so subtle suggestion that the human race may be redeemed...in the second coming of humankind. I found the movie thought provoking. Which I find more entertaining than exploding planets, and evil overlords.

Beatless Nick (2007)

I dig it!

A hip short about a short hipster. This animated short film tugs at the heart strings and makes a sweet sound. The offbeat main character immediately connects with the wannabe in all of us. While the free flowing design is a perfect accent to the rhythmic beat that lifts the story. I was snapping my fingers and bopping my head from beginning to end. It's a couple of minutes of heartfelt entertainment that will make your entire day.

Visual metaphors and playful performances make full use of the animation medium. The cool analogous color scheme sets a nice mood. Nik deserves a seat right next to Kerouac and Ginsberg. It would be a booster seat, but that's cool.

Play on little fella.
