Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)
Whatever happened to movie editing
It should be impossible to fumble the bag so badly on a nostalgia trip movie like this. Just let Tom Cruise run, do some crazy stunts and play the iconic theme music. But no they gotta drag on for three hours with a meaningless storyline just for it to be one part of an incomplete movie. Like whatever happened to movie editing? There's no reason for this movie to be this long and a lot of the content is completely unnecessary to move the plot forward. I don't expect MI movies to have watertight logic but then atleast the writers shouldn't twist themselves into knots thinking they're making a deeper movie than they are, the sooner these movie trends with AI, quantum space tunneling, multiverse nonsense end the better it is for good storylines.
K.G.F: Chapter 1 (2018)
Lost all braincells
Looking at the kind of films that are be becoming pan national blockbusters I don't know if I should be worried about how braindead my average countryman is or about myself for living amongst them.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
Meaningless madness in the pursuit of biological motherhood
Doesn't matter if you are a superhero, you simply can't live a fulfilling life without them biological children! No, adoptions don't cut it! Gotta be from your uterus! You need to go on a rampage slaughtering people and risking destroying multiple universes cos motherhoood! No love stronger! :') Marvel needs to spend more time at the writers table than just strewing 'goosebumps moments' through periods of mediocrity.
Game of Thrones: The Bells (2019)
Only decent episode of the season
The only decent episode in what has been an abysmal season. But that also means it's good only as a standalone episode cos the sharp turn of character arcs it took to set this one up made no sense. Some things still didn't make sense like the scorpions all missing and what not but overall a decent episode and finally some HBO money being put to use. Maybe people are right about the fact that the writers were set up to lose no matter what story arc they came up with, but this one atleast satisfied my personal nihilistic interests after the night king let down.
Dave Chappelle: Equanimity (2017)
The goat
Dave Chapelle is the goat and this is one of his finest works. Its current rating is ridiculously low for the quality of this masterpiece.
Hasan Minhaj: Homecoming King (2017)
Excellent story teller
This isn't a regular standup, it's more an autobiographical sociopolitical commentary with humour sprinkled in. Hasan is an excellent and powerful story teller and he really paints out different life experiences and weaves them beautifully with sharp social commentary. I'm sure a lot of immigrants and especially South Asians might be able to relate to it. He's a good comedian too and the bit is definitely funny but it was definitely more commentary than humour and he doesn't quite have the Dave Chapelle flair of making the set as funny as it is powerful. And imo I think he mischaracterizes Bill Maher and the Ben Affleck fiasco but still a very good set overall.
