Eureka: Games People Play (2007)
Eureka Just Keeps Getting Better
"Games People Play" has great acting chemistry, plot twists that are enjoyable (though not hard to figure out), and has the wonderful Eureka style combination of humor and drama. The addition of Olivia d'Abo to the cast as Carter's wife adds an element that complicates the story line in a way that will have fascinating ramifications in future episodes. The attitude shown by the people of Eureka towards their sheriff in crisis in "Games People Play" is a revealing look into the Eureka community (though a little heavy handed}.
Season 2 of Eureka has improved over Season 1 by deepening character relationships and producing dialog that flows even more smoothly from ironic to emotion filled to laugh out loud funny. Production values such as sets and special effects are as good as anything on television. At the same time, the spirit of the series has been maintained. I think it can be safely said that the writers, producers, and actors are dedicated to tuning and enriching the elements of the show that have made it special from its first episode.
I'm already crossing my fingers that Eureka will be picked up for Season 3. People already watching, tell your friends how great it is to visit Eureka - let's keep a good thing going.
Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars (2004)
Epic Space Opera
"Peacekeeper Wars" continues the Farscape tradition of grand opera in space. Life, loyalty, betrayal, and death portrayed with planets and galaxies as a backdrop. The storyline is dense and compact, effortlessly building in a very short time the ending to a story that has been unfolding for more than four years - and doing it in such a way that even the uninitiated can comprehend it.
More than just a great story, "Peacekeeper Wars" is great cinema, an extraordinary meshing of written and visual art. "Peacekeeper Wars" is a movie that can be appreciated just in terms of its craft - magnificent special effects merge seamlessly with an complexly plotted, character driven story. The resulting synergy is a joy to behold.
With so many mindless, poorly crafted, overly expensive science fiction movies insulting our intelligence at local multiplexes, let's hope Farscape finds a future there. There is a huge audience waiting for it.
