Arupusu monogatari watashi no Annetto (1983)
Annette of my childhood
I grew up watching different Japanese anime series from the Iranian television (all dubbed in Persian), and for me this one is the most memorable of all. I remember that I first watched it in 1987 when I was just about 4 years old
Although I have not read the original novel on which this anime series is based, I am sure it captures every emotion the novel has intended, from Annette's anger toward Lucien to her later feelings of missing him. The main point here is the childish romance between Annette and her friend Lucien. They are close friends until Annette's little brother "Danny" is damaged and almost paralyzed due to Lucien's almost unintentional mistake (at first there was an invisible rivalry between Lucien and Danny). After that accident, Annette does not speak with Lucien again and that makes Lucien really sad
Apart from his feelings of guilt about what he has done to Danny, the fact that he is now rejected by Annette is intolerable for Lucien and he tries to repair their friendship again, but Annette is a strong-willed and stubborn girl who just can't forgive and forget so easily
(I remember as a child my heart broke watching Lucien so upset after his wooden horse was deliberately destroyed by Annette)
In short, I can say that just as the characters did, I also experienced different feelings of happiness, hatred, hope and despair my way through this unforgettable series
Another good point of this series was that the mountain village in which the story takes place was depicted so beautifully as I can never forget the beauty of snow covered Alps and also the snowy nights in it.
But above all, what makes this anime so special for me is that in my childhood days I saw similarity between Annette and myself. At first, she was the only child (as I was) and then she had a baby brother (and I did too). And what was interesting was that almost around the time Danny was born, my brother was born too! and Danny was an extremely beautiful and charming little thing, just like my own brother (actually the only difference was that Danny grew up much faster than my brother did!)
As a child, I wanted to be like Annette (that was before she broke the wooden horse of course!) and I remember that watching her cook for the family, made me want to do the same, though no one would allow me to do the cooking!
Shanks (1974)
I expected much more from William castle
Being a William Castle fan, I was disappointed by his last work which is more like a made-for-TV film.
Although I liked Marceau's talent in miming, I should say the only thing that I truly enjoyed was seeing William Castle for a few moments in the role of a shop keeper.
Apart from that, any thing else seemed unsatisfactory. The film has a very slow pacing which will make most of the viewers bored. The editing is poorly done and film could have been at least 40 minutes shorter. In addition that what characters do (and even their deaths!) seems extremely stupid and perhaps the reason is that the writer couldn't find another way to advance the story.
But still I confess there were moments of fun which may be especially interesting for children.
[Rec] (2007)
A must-see for all horror film buffs
I watched this movie the other day and all I can say is that it was fantastic! I always search for horror films which do not show much violence or nudity and so I liked this one a lot.
What I enjoyed most was the fact that in spite of having a supernatural theme, the atmosphere was realistic and as a result more terrifying (clearly influenced by works such as The Blair Witch Project). Just when you begin to think you can predict the course of events, things take an unexpected turn
The only problem was that Manuela Velasco seemed to be overacting in some scenes. And of course although there are some good camera views, I think another problem is that camera shakes the whole time which is certainly irritating for some viewers and – I think- was not necessary.
Loft (2008)
an engaging thriller
Loft is recommended for all lovers of murder mysteries. Here, Each character can have several motives, but not necessarily those you may think
the film will have you in its grip the whole time as you will keep guessing, and of course most of your guesses won't come true!
As in many other murder mysteries, one of the themes here is that NO ONE can be trusted. Another is that nothing is absolute. It may even remind you of Rashomon in a way
I especially enjoyed the lighting and set locations, and I won't forget Flip's naughty looks at his wedding when he is presented with his key! if I am not mistaken he's the one that says: "now we must look for someone to take to the loft!"
the film has a well-developed plot. Every piece of it seems to fit into the other well, but by this I don't mean that we can't find holes. with all those short cuts, The film moves so fast that at some points, you may not even have the time to think about the plot itself!! and maybe that's one of the reasons that most of the viewers praise the plot. In fact, it has so many details that a week after watching the film, you will probably forget half of them and what you will remember of it is the feeling of thrill that made you enjoy it. Now that I think about it, I understand how those friends lost trust in each other, but I don't know why they trusted each other in the first place!
And I should also admit that the ending did not satisfy me as it did not match the dynamic plot of the film
But overall, I enjoyed the film and look forward to learning more about Belgian cinema
M - Eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder (1931)
Filmed with an eye that was a generation ahead of its time
Fritz Lang has always been one of my favorites and so is his masterpiece M. almost any of Lang's films can be related to M in some way. Here, we have a chance to travel into the mind of a madman and maybe even our own mind, as the title of the film suggests. (murderers among us), something that resonates again in Lang's later films such as Fury (1936)
In M, LANG brilliantly succeeds in creating an atmosphere of menace through the use of sound. There are moments of dead silence which is sometimes broken abruptly, creating a feeling of unease.
Lang also shows influence from Murnau (particularly "the last laugh") in terms of camera movements. I never forget a scene in which camera goes up the wall and (then through the window), enters the room in which beggars are being organized
it is interesting that the cooperation between thieves and beggars is effectively organized as each beggar even receives a personnel number
Also unforgettable for me are the shots that show Elsie's absence; an empty chair, empty staircase and finally Elsie' ball moving on the bushes and her balloon that is released from telephone wires
.
Definitely a great success for Herr Lang for all its cinematic achievements
