Pride (I) (2014)

Incredible effort, but oh does it hit so hard
10 September 2014
I saw this yesterday at a preview and was particularly impressed by the amazing production values shown in this film, as well as the powerful warmth of the ensemble cast within this. Many stand out, to the point where everyone stands out. My personal favourite performances are probably Dominic West's because of his wonderful energy, fantastic delivery and that the fact that he was playing a gay men (and was significantly less creepy than his Fred West performance) and Jessica Gunning's who played her play with such warmth and fire. That said, Staunton, Nighty and Schnetzer et all had some determination as well, it really is that not to want to give individual props to all.

British humour tends to be our best selling point and this film lays bare just how raw and witty we can be in our dialogue when handling such powerful drama. That said, the film is a very difficult viewing experience, in my eyes. The Miners Strike alone is a very raw and sad event for all to see, especially when there will be absolutely no surprises as to the outcome. On top of this there is a plethora of tragic LGBT issues that further hit the viewer like a fist throughout, be it a family not accepting their gay son, the Miners' refusal to fully support the LBGT community when the going gets tougher (the bleakness of those scenes are particularly devastating), the start of AIDS and the knowledge that these men's lives will never be the same, the occasional violence shown to the gay men… the list really does go on. The fact that there is a strong undercurrent of humour throughout is particularly needed and welcomed, although towards the end it proves hard to laugh at. Many look back to the 80s with total joy, but for many people, they were uncertain, intensely painful years to survive in. This movie is a tribute to them, and the cast and crew provide their joie de vivre with an open, pulsating heart.

Watch this preparing to feel a wide variety of emotions. Not all settling.

Harmonious for Christmas fans and Judy of course
5 December 2005
This like Judys excellent "The Harvey Girls" is literally a joyful specular with a warm performance by Garlandand Van Halen. When i started watching i thought "going to be a slow film." I was wrong Judy's worryingly few numbers in th film are classic MGM. In fact the film i classic MGM with the brightest star of MGM. Havin just watched i i could watch it as much as say "The Wizard of Oz." The added Christmas feel makes the film so warm nd inviting Kudo's to all Garland and MGM were soon to be no more but Judy really shines and always is in the habit of taking away the blues. Oh and the story in a nutshell. Both Garland and Van Halen are the perfect match but this is because they write each other letters.Only they don't seem to realise they are perfect for each other CLASSIC!

What Performances and Music. There is virtually something for everyone....
17 October 2005
Warning: Spoilers
It begins like many biographies. A child full of joy, unaware of the dangers to come. In a film that is unbelievably violent this is a worthy film to watch for two incredibly intense performance. The film gets two very gutsy performances in the form of Angela Basette and Lawerence Fishburne. They make a great on screen pairing mostly however in the violent abuse scenes that show Ike to be the most hateful of men. Fishburne does not try to be likable but based on the material he was a violent drug taking womaniser. Fishburne is a powerhouse and deserved fully his Oscar Nomination. However the film belongs to Basette. I think virtually everyone will agree that this is a performance that requires a lot of depth. From happier then happy rock and roll star of the sixties to abused and sudicial "Anna Mae Bullock". The film is slightly frustrating because too much goes on and there are too many scenes dedicated to this and that but i found it wonderful to watch such unparallelled acting. The setting provides for a brilliant use of dazzling cinematography and brilliant outfits (virtually anything Ike wears I would wear!.) The end scenes also make the film balance out. Watching the final number "What's Love Got to do With it?" shows that people can learn from there mistakes.

For this film though the music, costumes, setting and overall mood does not beat the two Oscar nominated (and well deserved winners) of a film like this. Very much watching and the kind of film where you're next purchase is the soundtrack. Well that is a cracker.

Finally Basette's Tina is on par with Garland's Vicki Lester in "A STAR IS BORN." Both were nominated performances that are both the most genuine of genuine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Poltergeist (1982)

Why Poltergeist works as a film of many dimensions
12 August 2005
Warning: Spoilers
In the seventies, Horror was the new "genre" to make a film. Musicals and family films were good fun but many people wanted danger and chills while watching a film that combines terror with fear. A combination most popular with The Texas chain Saw Massacre. The films could be good fun but the plot was as threadbare as the acting. Poltergiest is a film that can appeal to many more people then simple horror movies. It is centred around a family of different ages. It starts pleasantly yet the youngest child Carol Anne talks unnaturally to a dead television screen. Slowly everything blends the music is Oscar worthy and brilliant for the mood. The setting is not isolated as such but the film is in two different worlds. The real life and the an in-between land of people wanting to move away from the light. The screenplay sizzles with quotes such as "they're here" "stay away from the light" "you son of a bitch. you left the bodies but you only moved the headstones." The "kidnap" or "abduction" of Carol Anne is a parents nightmare and the secondary characters who deal in the "supernatural" understand the parents fear creating a blend of subtly and fear is brilliant and terrifying to watch.

The build up of tension starts with the "tv people" entering their home and making minor changes to their life's (moving the furniture etc.) Soon trees and clowns all personify to effect the family and try and take Carol Anne into the light. The objects of fear are natural fears (both clowns and skeletons are enough to make you scream at the top of your lungs. Normality never quite remains intact in this film but i would class this as the greatest horror movie. The last 15 minutes literally keep you hanging as you watch the Freeling Family desperate to leave the home that they built. It still holds up and is a pleasure to watch. The two sequels followed and they are dreadful to say the least. Only when you have a film complete with engaging characters, acting of calibre, effects to hold your breath, a score of enchantment and the screenplay and story so gripping you know you're in for a good two hours of chilling and brilliant entertainment. The sequels seem to burn away the cast as it was the "Carol Anne" collection. Whereas it is about the lives of a family. A family story that is similar yet different to a movie about a child abduction, this is simply more inventive and enigmatic. I would even suggest(possibly) a accolade such as best horror movie/a top 250 position. Well it's definitely very good!

Perfect characterisation of relationships and contains all the simple pleasure that time forgot
20 July 2005
There is a film like this very rarely and indeed it works like we actually do know the Thayers. Indeed we can most certainly relate to Henry Fonda while Katharine Hepburn is more then an incredible actress. In this film the mix of drama and comedy from her as a character shows why she won that record breaking fourth Oscar statuette.

I'll just say the story in a nutshell. Jane Fonda and her father did not get along. Jane, however wanted one last chance for a close bond to her father and bought the rights to the play "On Golden Pond." In the film the Oscar winning performance by Henry Fonda (his only in a career spanning decades.) Jane fully deserved her Oscar nomination for her exceptional (and of course very realistic performance.) In the actual film the chemistry of Hepburn and (Henry) Fonda is perfect. This film really to try to put into words is a really touching gem that makes you feel so uplifted. Your spirits soar and any relationship that can be amended and is anywhere near as strong in the film (From Hepburn and Fonda) shows us what acting can do.

Oscars abound, critical praise and very likely the last of the old fashioned melodramas (Mainly because acting has moved on a generation from these sorts of films.) The sentiment and feel is perfectly placed and the storeys clicked so much like the Fonda Father- Daughter relationship. It is a warm intelligent character based film that i would advise everyone to see at once!

It's simply marvellous. This is truly Doris' day to shine
13 May 2005
This is a wonderful marvellously entertaining film starring the ever watchable Doris Day and the equally watchable Howard Keel.

The story is about a tom boy cowgirl who falls in love with Keel's character Bill Hicup. However he loves the newcomer all the way from "Chicagee" Katie. In the film it works perfectly

It's so entertaining to watch, it packs quite a few songs including the superlative "Black hills of Dakota." Doris is superb and the film moves with such fierce velocity that you simply can't get bored.

The sets, the characters, the accents and the costumes' all make this an unmissable piece of entertaining that like in the film that better then anything they got in that windy city "Chicagee"

Excellent.

An interesting film where MGM was at the highest of heights
12 May 2005
Well this is an interesting film from the times when MGM was simply an enormous studio pouring out more film then, it seems we could ever watch.

I have to say this film is simply boring and the length is far too long. The idea of the film is great and there's one more factor that makes it memorable.

They say MGM had more stars then were in the galaxy. They have plenty in this film and some still stand today. Judy (Garland), Angela (Lansbury) and Frank (Sinatra) all gave the film zest with their musical numbers. However the only problem with the film is, it's very hard to watch in just one showing.

However if you like the history of MGM, watch the studio with power, zest and plenty of stars to pass the time as those clouds roll by.

Pretty entertaining Hitch...once again
10 May 2005
Suspicion

This is the film that followed the ingenious Dumaurier classic "Rebecca." Joan Fontaine is back once again and clasped the Oscar with her portrayal as a quiet Englishwomen (similiarities with Rebecca quite justified) thinking her husband, Cary Grant is trying to kill her. The story works very neatly, however i need to add the ending does not work, however don't worry I'm not giving anything away. Well it's definitely worthwhile to watch as i think Joan Fontaine is great. Cary Grant also works nicely in an early Hitch that is also to watch and another excellent example of suspense.

Cinderella (1950)

The most magical of all the Disney movies for me. pretty excellent too
9 May 2005
Cinderella....

I hadn't watched this film for about five years the last time i saw it. The magic remains. There is something that definitely contains that storybook feel, the songs entertain and the secondary character's all please. The villains in the form of step sisters are perfectly evil and vile. Then there is the most magical of all Disney, the mice making the dress and well you know the rest. To sum up the four of the Disney princess movies are all great but this is a charming magical experience, watch and enjoy. Oh and of course, Cinderella is wonderful as the main character in the movie.

If you think about it Disney movies can really lost their charm. With Elene Wood and others the movie has such a feel to it, you simply can't help but smile

They say the moral of this story is that dreams come true. Of course in the real world some are believers others are hoper's. In this film it's even more the magical when her rainbow comes smiling.

And of course the rest is...Cinderella

My favourite of all the Disney animated movies and worth a look for any Disney fans.
8 May 2005
For a lot of people on this site, this is either one of thew best Disney movies or one of the worst. There is about 40 animated Disney movies and my personal favourite will always be the mad world of Wonderland. I don't actually know why but to me this is what i always thought about as a child, a mad world where simply nothing made sense. It goes like dynamite at only seventy two minutes and in that they have an array of entertaining characters and fourteen entertaining songs. To me it is the genius of Disney creating an entertaining look at a child's world. I think it is because of the Jungle Book that this is not as popular as some of the Disney Classics but you can't help but smile when you watch the Queen of hearts and the Mad Hatter being their own creative self's in the wonder of this amazingly clever gem

Magnificent A Star Is truly (re)born
11 April 2005
It seems truly amazing that Judy Garland could have give such a perfectly emotional performance as the wife of a falling movie star by the name of Norman Maine(James Mason). I can't describe how brilliant this film really was, at first overlong but at the end, it became a very moving piece of drama and it didn't even seem to matter that the musical set-pieces were far and few (but they were brilliant as well.) I purchased the 2 disc DVD set mainly because of the praise this film received, i loved the film but don't think it is worth a two disc set. There are no modern features and therefore it is just purely outtakes and premiere reels of the film in 1954. Really what mattered though is the superb performances from both James and Judy. They were nothing short of exceptional, as for the film otherwise the songs were brilliant however the story could drag ever so slightly, even if the scenes became very poignant and showed the mental disintegration of the fading actor Norman Maine (James, you were brilliant in this role.) The film is a gem and i would advise everyone to see it. It was a 4 year comeback for films for Judy and she didn't make any more for another 7 years, so sit back and watch a great drama piece from Cukor with, I think two performances worthy of Best Actress and Actor and well what more could you say, it's even got the classic song "The Man Who Got Away." Brilliant.
