Meh...

It's not a bad film but unfortunately its not something you need to rush to the theaters to see.

I regret paying for Imax to see this. It's blown up for the screen but they don't even have a single scene that using the whole Imax screen like the last film did. You'll also notice it look crappier than usually, that's because it's the first to all be shot on digital which really brings down the quality but would have made it easier for the over use of CGI. This will likely look a lot better on a smaller screen meant for video games.

Poor Tom Cruise is out there risking his life to do these amazing stunts but he's obviously become blinded by his friendship to this director to see how complacent McQuarrie has become. The MI films were awesome when they had a different director each time, now its formulaic. And there is so much CGI this time in every sequence that they may as well have animated Cruise doing that jump, as you can't tell it was done for real unless you watch the behind the scenes. It's a shame we get Christopher McQuarrie again in the next one because we didn't even get a whole story this time around, only part one. I will not be seeing part 2 in theaters for this reason.

Lastly, what also prevented this from being a stronger film is the villain. He's well written with some great scenes to work with but totally miscast. They really need to cast a known actor who can actually act. If they had cast Nicolas Cage in this part it would have made up for all it's faults.

Anyway, I love this franchise and though I have no hope for the next one I hope this return to form in part 9. Hopefully get a fresh director who can direct in a way that you on the edge of your seat like, Gareth Evans. And get an Oscar winning actor as the villain like Cage, or Ali Mahershala or Daniel Kaluuya or Brendan Fraser.

Must be seen in the theatres! (IMAX if possible)
29 September 2016
I usually don't write reviews but saw mostly negative reviews on here so far and that ain't right.

It is not a perfect movie and it's not artsy, or profound. However it is very entertaining, has wide appeal, will make you laugh, have you on the edge of your seat and might even make you cry. It's a slow build at the beginning but the tension soon rises and you will then be hooked. The effects appear to be realistic and mostly practical made with a production value that appears to be one of the most expensive films ever made (which alone is impressive given it is not a sequel or superhero movie).

Mark Wahlberg works as an everyman lead, but it is Kurt Russel who steals the show. Maybe the performance of his career, and the strongest aspect of the film in my opinion. Malkovich is also amazing as the villain, stealing every scene he is in. The two of them along with the incredible story done with top notch sets, effects and sound is exactly why you have to pay the money to see this on the biggest screen possible.

If you need a film to be a character study or you want senseless action from start to finish then you might be one of the people who is disappointed. But if you are looking for a gripping story with great tension and action that can be enjoyed by a wide range then go see this film.

Scream 4 (2011)

On par with the first film
23 April 2011
What made the first Scream film so good was that it picked apart the horror genre and rewrote the rules. The film spawned a whole generation of horror films that set out to be different than those classics. Now 15 years after the first film was released and over 10 years since the last those films are now classics. The sequels were true to the first but none had the same impact as the first.

The whole point of Scream 4 is how life and the genre has changed as have our expectations. It starts off by letting you know that they know this, the same way the first film let you know they knew the rules. Scream 4 is not perfect but it far better than Scream 2 and 3 and delivers the same refreshing excitement and cleverness that was in the Original.

If you enjoyed the original Scream then you should enjoy this one just as much. I highly recommend seeing it in theatres as this is one of those films that does benefit from watching it with an audience. Will make you scream, laugh and keep guessing till the end.

Sooo much fun!!! See it in theatres with an audience!!!
13 October 2010
You will leave this film laughing. The action scenes are really good but it's the characters and actors that makes this film worth seeing. The casting in this film was perfect! Great all around supporting cast. Morgan Freeman is always a nice touch to any film. Helen Miran firing a Rambo sized gun is worth the admission alone. If you miss the classic Bruce Willis Action Comedies this one makes up for all the bad ones in recent years. But what really makes this film worth seeing in theatres with an audience is John Malkovich! John Malkovich steals the show with maybe the performance of his career. If Johnny Depp can get nominated for "Pirates" and Robert Downey Jr. can get nominated for "Tropic Thunder", then Malkovich should get nominated for this, seriously. Every time he came on screen the whole theatre would be dying with laughter.

Movies are expensive now and not all of them are worth seeing in theatre but this one is. It's not the best film ever made, the story could have been a little tighter, but I can promise you'll have a lot of fun and you will be laughing your ass off through most of it.
