Koi no tsuki (2018)
Have we grown into the adults that we imagined ourselves would be?
Have we grown into the adults that we imagined ourselves would be? Have we been doing what we SHOULD do but not spending time paying more attention to what's important? How many times have we put others first and held resentments and only realized when we could have walked away so long ago? What's more wrong than the other? To belittle herself so that she fits in the expectation of a mediocre and ordinary life that the society expects? Or to fall in love with a tonnage boy?
These are the raw emotions that I felt whe watching this tv series. Yes, the romance itself is strange and some may find it unacceptable, but it's a TV drama with beautiful (at times erotic) cinematography. I have not seen such a good japanese drama in this genre for a long while. It seems irrelevant while also realistic at the same time. The plot makes the most extreme combination possible, an 30ish female and a teenage boy. It invites the audience to feel the sentiments as well as to questions what we will do if we were her or hm.
Oddly, we are the stories we tell ourselves. She told herself that she's always the second choice to others while she had been treating herself as a second choice to herself as well.
There is no 'us' if there is no 'I', as the author of The Choice: Embrace The Possible , Edith Eger, realized that her unhappiness and resentment in her marriage derived from this very idea. This drama also touches upon this concept at the end, which I really like and admire this very courage to walk away, to be honest with herself, in order for both of them to become 'I' before there could ever be a 'us'.
The sentiments still linger so do the questions. If you enjoy dramas that has this effect, it's worth watching. Plus, each episode is around 25 minutes, and I did not fastforward any single bit.
Reflection of You (2021)
It left me with similar feeling after watching The Piano
Among many K-dramas, though this one contains some melodramatic elements which do not always add up, it tells a story about choices, lust, and the question about what's right and wrong. Yes, it gets painfully slow at times, and I confessed that I fast-forwarded some parts when binge-watching several episodes in a row. All in all, the acting of the leading actress, (played by Hyundai-Jung Go) and the chemistry between she and the young artist (played by Jae-young Kim) is quite good. I enjoyed watching it because the emotions and the choices that the characters had and presented reminded me of myself when I was younger. I seemed to be at least once involved in part of the choices they made, such as not letting go of a long-term relationship, getting over a fling, being betrayed or once believing that my love for someone so firmly almost to the extent of irrationality and madness, and the extreme raw emotions and the aching of having to live without him or her. Or for example, one of the characters would rather her ex-lover died long ago then being in a coma and returned. These aspects are well-acted out in this drama. It is certainly not to be compared to the movie, The Piano (1993), in every aspect, but the haunting tune that it left is quite similar to me. You couldn't help but wonder, what kind of choices you would have made if you were them. Why were we sometimes attracted to someone when you knew you should not? What is right and what is wrong? Eventually, all the choices we made led up to where we are now. All the actions and inaction have come to an end for some in this drama.
20segi sonyeo (2022)
Something to watch in the weekend
It's kind of cheesy, but I enjoyed this predictable romantic movie. This reminds me of the classic Japanese film, Love Letter (1995). The nostalgia of the late 90's setting brought me some warm fuzzy feelings as an east-Asian who also grew up around the same time as these protagonists were. We all remembered that very first heartache, first farewell to our first love. The intense feelings that we used to experience when we were young eventually passed. The pains, the sorrows, the heartache, and the one-hundred questions about why those things had happened were so far-fetched until one day we found a piece of evidence from the past, and we realize that we can smile at it and are even grateful for all what had happened ao far. The actors and actresses in the film did a quite good job for this type of movie. It can sometimes look a bit too dramatic, but this is also the characteristic of this sort of movie.
All in all, If you enjoy k-drama from time to time, this is something to spend your Friday evening on. Also, if you are a fan of Kim You Jung as I am, you will certainly enjoy her performance in this film.
Fire of Love (2022)
Nice way to spend a weekday afternoon
As a whole, I enjoyed this documentary because of the breathtaking footages taken by Katia and Maurice which are amazing and full of wonders! It's a nice way to spend a Friday afternoon in the summer and felt inspired by their enthusiasm ans curiosity to explore the unknown, which I found very inspiring.
What I personally found less enjoyable was the way the plot of their love story was presented which I would have fast forwarded if I watched this film at home on a streaming service (I watched it in a movie theater). I felt that that this film was trying to present the story in the two French volcanists' version of "Amélie". The sentiment that the female narrator tried to create made me feel distracted from learning more about connection between Katia and Maurice ans their deep engrossment in volcanos.
I gave it a 7 because of the personal footages by Maurice and Katia and their adventures which were so close to where the eruption was. I particularly loved how they just walked down to the crater or the lava!
The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020)
Entertaining as well!
I expected it to be a serious movie about political movement and trials at court, but after seeing the good reviews here, I gave it a try. I am Asian and did not know about this part of American history until I watched this movie. The movie turned out to be surprisingly entertaining as well! Some of the lines are so funny and witty. The judge is also such a character. Great acting as well! Certainly worth watching!
