Midsomer Murders: The Blacktrees Prophecy (2022)
Season 23, Episode 1

This Isn't Midsomer Murders
21 April 2024
One of the worst yet.

Many of the newer episodes have absolutely none of the charm of the original Midsomers but this is as bad as it gets.

No kitsch characters like the Rainbirds, no memorable or interesting characters at all, no picturesque village scenes, no subtle camp comedy, just distinctly average writing, and truly awful acting. Special mention in this category to Kate Robbins (??) and the lad who played the character of Zane - he alone made this episode almost unbearable to finish, he was truly truly terrible to the point I physically cringed every time he was on screen.

Forced myself to finish watching it but won't bother again.

Terrible
14 March 2024
I usually love Morgana and this had a couple of other biggish names in it but it was just dreadful.

Not funny and dull. Cheap & nasty, and rather depressing to watch, right down to the bad music between scenes.

It's hard to explain why it's so bad but it's just miserable.

Ok but Alan is too slow.
4 November 2023
This is a fun enough concept to play along with, and we usually love Alan Carr but he does not work as the host of this. The format of the show involves contestants answering questions against the clock but Alan is not fast enough asking them / confirming they're correct etc which really slows down play and is frustrating to watch.

Also a lot of the pictures are really bad, as in it's difficult to tell what the picture is supposed to be, which again hinders contestants (or viewers) answering.

It's not awful, it's watchable, but it just doesn't sit quite right.

Not enough characters so typing this.

Should've believed the reviews..
6 August 2023
Firstly it's incredibly slow. Should've been a two-parter (if that). I was ready to give up 20 minutes in but I trudged on.

Secondly it's incredibly cringey; bad writing, bad directing, bad acting. It thinks it's saying something about gang culture etc but by the time you get to THE big deep & meaningful scene that's supposed to be the crux of it, you just don't care anymore, even if it was done well (which it wasn't).

Thirdly it's very unrealistic, why wouldn't the gang have just taken her out straight away, they clearly have no qualms killing people.

It's boring and embarrassing to watch, I'd skip it!

Hugely Biased
8 January 2023
Five stars for Michael Sheen's fantastic performance as Chris Tarrant, he's got it spot on.

Other than that, the whole production is incredibly one sided, and biased in favour of the Ingrams, who are played as innocent.

Lots of important information is left out, and there are lots of fictional scenes of the Ingrams discussing their innocence etc.

The character of Charles Ingram himself is also played very differently to the real Charles Ingram, it's all a bit of an odd mess. Were the producers pals with the Ingrams..?

Look up the documentary on the subject, and the original episode itself.

Just Doesn't Work
7 January 2023
Usually I love music quizzes but I just can't sit through this one.

Mo is a terrible host, just laughing at himself a lot, and the round where he raps is incredibly cringeworthy - how is it possible to RAP out of tune..?!

Most of the music in the programme and the celebrity guests aren't really suitable for a UK prime time family audience (it's mostly American guests and a fair bit of hip hop / rap music that a lot of people won't know). Apparently it's an American show that's been refilmed with Mo for the UK.

Obviously most game shows are set up / rehearsed, but the 'spur of the moment' singing battles etc in this show stretch credulity to such an extent it's unbearable to watch.

It's not worth your time sadly.

Oh.. that was disappointing...
31 December 2022
I'm a performer myself and put off watching this for years because I had a hunch it'd annoy me..

It didn't annoy me, but it did disappoint me. Thoughts:

* Couple of great songs, the others are very average.

* Terrible, terrible, cringeworthy choreography. Not all of it, but a lot of it looked like my 12 yr old street dance choreography efforts in the 90s. Uncomfortable to watch.

* No character development.

* Actually quite dull.

Also it turns out Barnum was not a good guy and this is a very misleading representation of his story. Wouldn't watch again, not half as entertaining as it should've been.

Nothing Like Enchanted.
20 November 2022
This film is genuinely nothing like the first Enchanted (which was brilliant), so if you're hoping for something similar you're out of luck.

It's also just not a good film / movie in general. It's dull, long, not funny, the songs aren't great, and it has no charm. Storyline and writing are weak, I have nothing good to say about it. Actually there was one quite good song in the second half.

It doesn't even look good for the most part.

I've watched Enchanted many times and loved it every time, it still makes me laugh out loud. I'll definitely never watch Disenchanted again. Even if you pay me.

Not offensive, just not funny.
12 March 2022
I wasn't bothered at all how many times she mentioned willies or how many people she said she'd slept with etc, I didn't find it any more vulgar than many male comedians, and I didn't find it offensive - it just wasn't funny.

But it was SO unfunny that it made me cringe. Physically. The sketches were terrible, some of the stand up could've been ok if it'd been delivered by someone else perhaps but her delivery is so forced and unnatural it's hard to watch.

I'd say you should watch an episode just to see how bad it is, but that might encourage ITV to keep recommissioning it..

Was It Supposed To Be Funny..?
16 January 2022
We couldn't work out at first whether it was supposed to be a comedy disaster film. I don't think it was, but we laughed out loud several times.

Poor script, poor acting, poor direction. Plus the uncomfortable sexism the whole way through. Apparently the young hot chicks aren't able to climb to safety in their long dresses so have to remove them - but not their dangerous high heels. The older chubby lady was fine to keep her dress on though it seems..

Lots of melodramatic screaming from the female characters, who were constantly manhandled by the males throughout the film, and almost incessant SHOUTING from the male characters.

It should've been called Carry On Sinking. And it would still have been awful. Didn't care if they survived or not in the end...

God this is dull. So slow and boring. Several people repeating the same things, I gave up half way through the second episode and looked up the info about the case instead.

So so bad.
29 December 2020
I love a Panto. Totally over the top, silly, and just a bit of fun. This was not fun. The script was terrible, and very dull, you expect cheesy humour from a panto, but there didn't really even seem much attempt at humour at all. And the forty-fags-a-day voice and over-injected lips of Patsy Kensit didn't exactly give off a great panto Princess vibe.

I've seen Julian Clary in panto before and he was great, but I turned this monstrosity off before he even came on stage, perhaps he might've saved it, but it wasn't worth wasting another second of time on that hope..

Way worse than I expected.
21 August 2020
God. Where to start. If you're expecting anything even remotely edging towards Agatha Christie you will be severely disappointed. It's cheap and nasty, no depth of character, no intrigue, no grand dining room filled with glamorous characters, just a grotty little house with badly styled main characters.

The writing is terrible, the acting is terrible, the direction is terrible. Lots of annoying wobbly camera work. It's genuinely gruesome at points but mostly just embarrassingly cheesy. And one of the characters has the most annoying voice you've ever heard.

It used to be good..
24 June 2020
If we're talking about the older episodes, or the 'Tom Barnaby era' I would give it a solid 8, sometimes 9 out of 10. The more recent episodes (or the John Barnaby era) are barely a 5.

The older episodes were full of character, intrigue, and tongue in cheek personalities, set in beautiful picturesque English villages. The newer episodes are far too modernised, the characters are dull dull dull and the beautiful settings are gone too.

So much worse than I expected..
2 June 2020
I didn't want to get too excited about this, in case it was a let down. It was SO much worse than I expected.

Big fan of Steve Carell in The Office but this is embarrassing for him. It's incredibly unfunny, and very very dull. It doesn't flow well and it is a chore to watch. Honestly struggling to find anything good about it. Shame.

Embarrassingly bad.
31 January 2020
On paper this sounded like it would work, but it doesn't. It's just not funny. It's hammed up to the max by the actors but none of them are very good..

Although the humour is slapstick and obvious, I feel as though it might perhaps have worked to an extent in the hands of better performers, but sadly it's just boring and eventually unwatchable.

Tried too hard to be edgy.
26 December 2019
Couldn't get through it.

Producers tried so hard to make it edgy and it just ended up soulless and cringeworthy. It was unnecessarily nasty and left a very bad taste in the mouth.

Don't waste 3 hours of your life.

Unwatchable
28 October 2019
Oof, where to start.. the acting is terrible, which makes it difficult to believe that the people being pranked aren't in on it too, it seems very fake. The scenarios are ridiculous, it's massively cringey, and hosted by a kid given too much power, younger viewers might enjoy it but I can't see it appealing to anyone over the age of 20.

Please don't watch this.
19 January 2015
Wow, where to start. There aren't words to describe how bad this was. I am a HUGE fan of the first Dumb and Dumber, own it on DVD and watch it at least once a year. But this sequel is so far away from the original. The characters are completely unlikeable, warped from the first film into crude, nasty, heartless jerks! The silly humour from the first one has been changed into vile, offensive, sexist/racist poop which was really uncomfortable to watch. My partner and I watched it with his parents, and we all spent the whole film squirming and cringing in our seats.

The storyline doesn't work and the film just doesn't 'flow' at all, unlike the original. There are lots of places where you feel there should be some music at least, to fill the empty sound of the tumbleweed blowing.. And the music they did use was often taken from the first film, which actually just further made you think about how different the 2 pictures are. It didn't even look right, it looked cheaply made, and not nice to look at.

Standard unnecessary scene of young girl in her underwear, with a lame bit of dialogue around it to attempt to justify it, and another scene at the end showing a woman in a see-through shirt with no bra on walking towards them, both of which summed up the feeble attitude of the whole picture; take 2 stupid characters, throw in some half naked chicks, a bunch of gross jokes, hype up the promotion, bung it in the cinema and just take the cash. Hate hate hated it. We all did.

Funny, touching, real.
19 January 2015
Like most of the other reviewers who enjoyed this film, I'm baffled as to why it has such a low score on here. My boyfriend and I watched it last night, and we both laughed out loud a few times! The humour was witty, and not the obvious slapstick kind. OK, it might not have you rolling on the floor but it definitely had enough funny moments to make it enjoyable.

Unlike most 'comedies' these days the film wasn't crude, and had no bimbos in bikinis, so maybe some of the reviewers here just aren't used to decent, family friendly wit. The characters were likable, and I really felt that a lot of the dialogue and issues in the plot regarding love and relationships were very real. I could totally identify with a lot of it, and it was very touching at parts. Obviously you pretty much know where the story is going to go, but I actually felt like they swerved a lot of the obvious clichés they could have used.

In summary, I'm baffled as to how this has such a low score on here, especially compared to other films, and my partner and I both found it funny, engaging, touching, and would definitely watch it a few more times. Wouldn't have expected anything more from a fairly light-hearted romcom!

Rubbish. Cringefest. Don't waste your money.
7 May 2013
I really wouldn't bother with this one. The plot was a bit all over the place and really doesn't grab you, I wondered out of the screen half an hour from the end, went to the loo, checked my phone etc and probably wouldn't have bothered going back in if my partner hadn't still been in there! The script was really cringey, lots of lame one-liners but not much else. There weren't really any likable characters in the film, and the ones which had potential to be likable were barely in it. Typical cocky guy saves the world type thing, nothing we haven't seen a hundred times before. Few random unnecessary sexist bits, girls in bikinis playing table tennis (??), girls in lingerie etc. So cliché and cringey. Lots of plot holes which I won't go into in case you are going to waste your money but in general it was just messy and lame. And kinda boring in a way.

Slow,farcical,uninteresting.
4 April 2013
Confused as to why this film has such good reviews. The plot is pretty slow, the film takes ages to get going. Some farcical violence and cringey 'funny' moments. It's quite brutal and unnecessarily so. There's the odd bit of unnecessary female flesh chucked in every so often too but nothing much, nothing explicit. The film feels really long, in fact I actually stopped watching before the end because I had had enough and didn't even care what happened in the rest of the film. Even my boyfriend who will watch anything you put him in front of only had "That was sh*t" to say about it. I really wouldn't bother wasting your time on this film. I can't think of anything good to say about it.

Warning: Spoilers
Oof, should never have seen this film. It was slow, boring and with literally no stand out moments at all. James Franco was cr*p, and totally unlikeable. Mila Kunis gave an odd, over the top performance. Ha, which leads me on to another thing.. She was literally over the top of all her tops in the movie.. 3 female characters all wore cleavage revealing corsets, and fawn all over male character. They're supposed to be witches ffs, and *spoiler* even when Mila Kunis turns into the wicked witch she rips her top off (for no apparent reason), turns green and warty, but still has a low cut cleavage revealing corset dress going on. Eh? When I was a kid witches were wicked, a bit scary, and probably covered in warts but not really sexy.. Does everything female have to be sexy? No need. It shows how bad the film was that that is pretty much all I can remember about it though.....
