Everyone's an a-hole, and then it's over
21 February 2018
Do you like characters who are irredeemable? Do you like characters who act completely irrationally? Do you like characters who make nonsensical decisions that contradict? Do you like characters who have barely character development? Do you like last-minute attempts to humanize asshole characters?

Well you'll love The End of The F***ing World!

I'm serious here. In the first 4-5 episodes every character has little, if any redeeming qualities. The characters are so flat you could blow them over just by breathing. It made me not care at all for any of them. Near the end, they tried to humanize the leads, but these attempts failed as the characters had already been presented as cynical don't-give-a-**** teenagers. Make no doubt, almost every character needs serious help. The series also pads it runtime by wasting plotlines that inevitably go nowhere, get resolved rather quickly, or add absolutely nothing to the story in any meaningful way. Finally, there are points where characters take one action, but then later take another action as if they suddenly just had a drastic change in moral code, despite there being no explanation for such a disparity of actions. It's extremely confusing and it makes you hate those characters even more.

If you want to watch a show and get depressed about how much you hate every single character, this is a great show for you. If you want actual depth and complex characters and actual story arcs, this show is not for you.

F*&% the Prom (2017)
5/10
First act is cheesy, second act is cliche, third act is creative
14 December 2017
F the Prom is a very interesting movie indeed. It is the first full-length movie from Fine Brothers Entertainment. The Fine brothers do work mainly on YouTube, and it shows in this movie. A lot of the cinematography of this movie remind me of YouTube videos, especially during the cheesy first act. Once you get through the cheese of the first act and the cliche of the second act, we arrive at the third act. This is where the movie really shines. There are unexpected twists and turns that, I think, make this movie unique. However, my main gripe with this show is how the adults are portrayed. I can only remember 6 adults characters in this movie. Three are parental characters, who are portrayed as unintelligent or otherwise bad parents. One gets an redemption arc of sorts, which was, in my mind, unearned. Two are teachers, both of which are portrayed in ways that make them extremely unqualified to teach. One doesn't care, and the other, in a flashback, laughs along with bullies at a student. Perhaps the worst character in this movie is the principal. In any reality, she would be fired from her job almost immediately. Her daily addresses to students are often condescending and inappropriate. Her character often broke the suspension of disbelief I had when watching this film.

TL;DR: Stay around until the end. Decide for yourself.

The Thinning (2016)
7/10
Decent, albeit cliché
13 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
The Thinning is an interesting beast. It came out on YouTube Red, a $10/mo subscription service. The movie itself is on the shorter end, clocking on at a bit under 90 minutes, although that includes the credits and the intro sequence that lasts 15-20 minutes. This is not saying that sequence is unimportant, it's just not fully relevant to the full story and just serves as part of a back story for one of the characters.

The basic premise is that a school aptitude test helps deal with overpopulation by having the lowest scoring 5% executed. This is told through an opening text slideshow. Now this movie is pretty cliché. Government power, young people uprising, but at least it's a fresh spin. You can't help but cheer on the protagonists, although it's obvious they will win.

The execution method itself, lethal injection, is not shown until about halfway through the movie. In between the start and there, there is a good display of emotion from a first grade teacher who has to step outside to clear her head of the moral dilemma she faces. It stands out, but it's the only moment like this.

The twist ending could be seen from the beginning though. The twist is: the "executed" students are just taken to an underground facility where it appears the tablets for the tests are made. I realized from the beginning that this movie didn't have the guts to see the true death of young people through. The intro sequence includes the main character trying, and failing to save his friend from the thinning. It was then I theorized that the girl might come back. Sure, losing a friend is a good motivation, but it's tame in comparison to the "reality" of the execution of students. In other words, if it wasn't a large enough moral challenge in the beginning to prompt action, loosing one friend wouldn't do it either. So the sequence must have had more meaning that just motivation.

Another thing that tipped me off was that, throughout the film, even when the leads are being sought after by the government agents in the school, they rarely encounter the agents, and the times they do, they easily take them down. The rest of their time is spent very successfully hiding. It's too easy.

The third thing that tipped me off is how it ended right before the twist. The governor, in order to cover up the fact that he ordered the falsifying of his son's, and other's scores (because his son purposely failed), he switches up who is gets executed at the last minute, including 2 people who supposedly passed, both who had previously been jerks in the movie. Now this movie was unconventional enough at least for me to know that it wouldn't pull this "the jerks get their comeuppance" play, especially when one was African American.

Overall, the general lack of real stakes and a bit of confusion made me realize it didn't have the guts to see it through to it's morally challenging conclusion. Also it gave it an excuse for a sequel. All in all, if you have an hour to kill you can watch it, but don't expect Oscar worthy performances.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: What They Become (2014)
Season 2, Episode 10
10/10
Amazing! (wish I could put in all caps but IMDb won't let me :P)
10 December 2014
This is by far the best episode of this show ever. I actually found myself thinking: "Is this really Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D?" This was one of the most action packed episode yet. Seriously, if you look away for a second you will probably miss something. And I'm not exaggerating there. This episode was spectacular. They had the courage to introduce plot points and cause events that they haven't so far in the series. This may even top some of the movies based on the stakes being so high. This truly shows what Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. can do. I can stand on its own. Instead of being secondary to the movies, is has become a kick-starter to the movies. The ending is amazing and has a very, very significant impact for the upcoming movies and of course the rest of the season. It was so action packed it had enough for several episodes. It took me a while to realize: they still have at least 10 new episodes left.

My gosh!
11 November 2014
First of all, my gosh that episode was awesome! And 9.9/10 on IMDb (at the time of this review)? I know it's right after the episode but dang.... looks like this was the best episode so far. All the other episode didn't even break 9. Not that that's bad. A solid 8 is still good. I'm hoping I don't jinx it for this episode though. This episode is one you would not want to miss. There was not too many big reveals but a lot of excitement and information nonetheless. So watch it before you watch the next one or else you will be horribly confused. And now, I leave you with my final words: this episode was good, and this review is spoiler free. Goodnight!

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2013–2020)
8/10
Must watch, but not in the way you'd expect.
21 July 2014
You must watch this show. Not because it's good, while it is, but because it's central to the movies. If you want to watch Marvel movies and understand them all, you are going to have to watch this. My no means am I saying that's the only reason to watch. I'm just saying. everything that happens here influences the movies and visa versa. It starts out sort of boring but the last 5-7 episodes are good. If you've watched the most recent movies you know why, and if you haven't, don't look it up. Anyway, now since the show has now found it's footing, I thing it will be a great second season. It's not superb, but it's enjoyable. I can't wait for it, and Agent Carter.

Taxi Brooklyn (2014)

Good Show, not Great
27 June 2014
Contrary to what people are saying, I actually liked this. Even though the acting isn't amazing, I usually can't spot bad acting just because I'm focused on the story. Yes, it is predictable and uses a lot of cliché plot points, but it make for good entertainment. Clichés aren't always bad, and the predictability doesn't extend too far into possible major plot points. I'm looking forward to the next episodes, but not with edge-of-my-seat excitement. And I don't think that's writers intended. It's a comedy-drama not a drama-comedy. It's wasn't written to be thrilling. It was written to be fun and entertaining. This is just my opinion. I may not even watch the next episodes. I may just read the online recaps. I may not even do that. But what I can say is that I enjoyed the first episode, and am hoping it doesn't disappoint me in the future.
